Can we do an Australian version? How much do you spend on grocery shopping..

Per week? How many people is it for and where do you shop?

I’m flabbergasted at the £££ people spend on their grocery shopping each week as I automatically convert to the AU$ (comparing apples with oranges I know).

I shop at Coles for myself, DP and our 1 yo DD (still BF and eats very little). We eat meat, I meal plan and don’t do any ‘top up’ shops during the week.

Yesterday I spent $165. This included a rotisserie chicken which does two meals and a lunch. Steak for DP for one night and chicken for me. Two of the planned meals are already in the freezer. I could easily have spent $200 but this would have included luxuries like bacon, salmon for bagels and a 24 pack of coke (and more chocolate).

This didn’t include nappies as I always get them at Aldi.

Interested to know what other Australian families spend on the weekly shopping?

Between 150 to 200. Im in perth which is hell expensive.
I've got three adults a teen and a tween. Also a cat.

SD1978 · 06/10/2018 03:12

Depends on what we need. Usually about $115 for me and DD. Although juts signed up to F45. Feck me. Have gotten their grocery list. $300 juts for me, for the bloody week only!!

janaus · 06/10/2018 03:20

I am a lazy shopper. I tend to just get what I need day to day, or for a couple of days. Just hubby and myself, babysitting grand kids once a week, so do lunches and snacks. I probably spend close to $250 a week. I don’t buy luxuries.

@Koalablue, that sounds fair for that many mouths.

@SD1978, bloody hell that’s crazy expensive Shock

I got a Marley Spoon box a couple of weeks back as it was half price - $35 for 6 meals ( 3 evening meals for 2 adults) no way would I spend the usual $70 though!

Where do you shop @janaus?

I'm on single parents pension so $120/ftn by necessity. I have a toddler, preschooler, cat and myself to feed. I shop at the 3 majors and local f&v to get all the specials/cheapest options at each, and we are getting more and more vegetarian the longer it takes me to find a job. It takes alot of planning and juggling and I'm really looking forward to the day I'm working again.

Quantumblue · 06/10/2018 03:31

I have just come back from shopping at Woolworths. $200 for me, Dh and teen dd including some v expensive shampoo dd begged for. When I go to Aldi it is more like $150 but the meat is not as nice.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/10/2018 03:33

@gingerfoxcub, that sounds really difficult. Where abouts are you based? We (very stupidly imo) moved states when I was 31 weeks pregnant. DP had a series of sales jobs but it took him a good year to land on his feet in a really good position.

Hopefully something comes along for you soon! I know how difficult it is as at one time we were surviving on $700 a fortnight Hmm God knows how, luckily we had cheapish rent.

We’re a family of 4 adults and one teen (the kids just won’t move out lol). We don’t drink and we meal plan everything and we spend $220-250 a week in Aldi.

We used to shop at Coles but we’re spending over $350 a week for basically the same stuff.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/10/2018 03:37

@Quantumblue sounds about right then? I often wonder about the difference between Aldi here and in the UK when I read these types of threads. I don’t mind shopping at Aldi but I find the produce to be crap. Meat I don’t really know? I suppose a $3 pack of sausages is never going to be great is it Hmm I also don’t like the toiletries. Great for pantry staples though.

about $400 a week for a family of 7. 4 adults and 3 kids Usually shop at Woolworths.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/10/2018 03:41

Oh but Aldi nappies are the best (better than huggies imo) Smile

I suppose families with more working adults have more people to split the cost though? I would hope so as these amounts are eye watering Shock

We have just moved to Aus from the UK. I find I can shop for a family of 4 at Aldi for around $100 a week and just supplement this with bits and pieces from Coles/Woolworths etc.

Thursdaydreaming · 06/10/2018 04:32

We spend $150-$200 per week for 2 adults and 1 baby. I always thought that was a lot and was slightly ashamed of our spending. But on this thread it seems average.

Thursdaydreaming · 06/10/2018 04:34

If we wanted to spend less, I think I could get all we need for around $100 easy. But at the moment we are a bit careless, don't usually meal plan, etc.

LadyCassandra · 06/10/2018 04:37

@SeaWitchly we’re about the same, $100 for 2 adults and 2 kids, and then I buy milk and bread every couple of days from Coles. We live v close to a Harris Farm and I go there and pick up discounted meat and veg too (too expensive for normal shopping!) We now have a 3rd child who is still a baby and BF, but nappies are cheap from Aldi.

Snitzelvoncrumb · 06/10/2018 04:42

I am in Adelaide, two adults three young kids. My budget is $200 a week can go up to $250 if I find something on special to stock up on. I shop at Cole's and aldi.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/10/2018 07:09

@SeaWitchly is Australia much more expensive than the UK for groceries? Would also love to know the differences between Aldi.

Too much.

I do a massive costco shop about three times a year when I drive to Brisbane. We have a woolies in town and a coles and woolies 75km away. Aldi opens us next year in the town 200km away so yay!

tiddlyipom · 06/10/2018 07:52

We are a family of 4, two teens.
We spend around $250 - $300 a week , a mix of Coles, Woolies, Foodland and speciality shops, the only things I buy in Aldi is the brioche rolls and Greek chicken, the rest of their meat is rank IMO.
I try to buy in season to keep costs down but still spend way too much.
This toatal doesn't include lunches for DH and eldest DS though.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/10/2018 08:53

@IvyFluids is Costco cheap? I’m close to Brisbane, might have a look online

Just one adult and I tend to shop monthly and batch cook:
$60 in butchers (bacon, chicken, pork roasting joint - $3.99/kg! maybe sausages)
$100 in Aldi for veggies and tins
$30 in Coles/Woolies for a shopping basket of bit I can't get in Aldi (spices/herbs etc)
Then live of precooked and frozen stews/curries/soups etc.
So works out around $50/week for one adult.
I was in Germany about 12 months ago and it sort of confirmed my suspicions, I find in Australia that "good" food (meat, veggies etc) is cheaper here and "bad" food (crisps/chocolate/ready meals) are more expensive by comparison.
