How fucking scary were dinosaurs?!

Tonight I read my three year old a lift the flap type book she got from the library about dinosaurs. I don’t know very much about dinosaurs and I have been educated!

One has a head the size of a small car! One has teeth as long as a child’s arm! Another has a sail on its back as tall as an adult human.

And crocodiles were around when dinosaurs were! And they just fanny about in America. Just haunting lakes and being fucking terrifying. Imagine dinosaurs still existed! And they just cut about, being massive with their teeth and their tales. Eating people.

Ffs.

Although my sister in law told me last time she was drunk that she doesn’t believe in dinosaurs. Is that a thing?!

I find it all mind boggling that not all dinosaurs were on earth at the same time. Stegosauraces was extinct for 66 million years before the t rex showed up Shock
That's very fortunate firnthe stegosaures!

We went to see Dippy the other day. My husband shouted 'there's a Velociraptor skeleton over here!' I went running over full of expectation and then deflated like a balloon.

Kind of like the Jack Russell of the dinosaur world.

I’ve always found that a good conversation starter is asking someone what their favourite dinosaur is. You quickly find out if you’re going to get on.

The answer is, of course, Triceratops Smile

BuddingGardener2017 · 06/10/2018 08:14

That game of "would you rather be chased by 10 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized ducks" always makes me think of velociraptors - they are the duck sized dinos!

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 06/10/2018 08:15

They didn't eat people because there weren't any people to eat!

From what I can recall of the endless dinosaur books we read when my two were little 20 years ago, the only mammals around at the time of the dinosaurs were tiny little shrew-like creatures which only came out at night. It was only the extinction of the dinosaurs that made it possible for mammals to evolve and diverge into however many dozens or hundreds of species we have now.

See, I'm now wondering whether in a couple of million years people are going to be digging up chicken bones and thinking "fuck, they must have been terrifying"

Chicken Park doesn't have quite the same ring to it though

The two-brained dinosaur was, alas, a big fat myth. Bugger.

We’d get on! Grin

My DC are obsessed with dinosaurs. I've learned loads since having kids.

Even my 5YO watches jurassic world and jurassic Park and complains about everything being wrong. 'Why don't the raptors have feathers mummy?!' Confused

Fatted · 06/10/2018 20:28

Also there's some thinking now that dinosaurs actually evolved into birds. So technically they are still here!

Google terror birds. Those things are fucking scary! And Moa's were still here when humans were! I think it's all fascinating!

PeakTrans · 06/10/2018 21:07

I love dinosaurs. If JP was real I would sell a kidney to go!

Soubriquet · 06/10/2018 21:13

My dh is a massive dinosaur fan

He loves Jurassic park. He refuses to believe they has feathers and if I was to tell him that velociraptors were chicken sized, I think it would break his heart Grin

I joined the Christians against dinosaurs Facebook page after the posting on here hoping for a laugh. Sadly it is now full of micky takers like me!Grin

Fully paid up member of the Stegosaurus fan club here.

I live a couple of hours drive from the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta, Canada. It’s an amazing place.

Alberta is so cool it even gets its own tyrannosaur - the Albertasaurus!

I joined Dinosaurs Against Christians Who Are Against Dinosaurs after that dinosaur thread! Bunch of nutters, but mostly lovely. A lot of them have infiltrated CAD and are probably taking the piss as I type this. I can well believe that people don't believe that dinosaurs existed, I know people from church who think the world is only 6000 years old. ShockConfusedHmmAngry

But yes, some dinosaurs were fucking scary. Others would have been freaking adorable. I think the diplodocus were quite cute.

SapphireSeptember · 06/10/2018 22:25

Does anyone else remember Walking With Dinosaurs? I loved that when I was a kid! I even got the videos for Christmas one year.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 06/10/2018 22:25

I find dinosaurs interesting. I'm delighted that DS is interested in them. And Blackgang Chine is great.

That thread in classics was, well classic. But I can't bear to read it because of ESD's deleted posts. Sad

Frouby · 06/10/2018 22:42

I have half a dozen hybrid chickens and 2 lavender pekins. I can absolutely believe they are raptors. The hybrids are pretty docile until the pilchards come out. Or tinned sweetcorn. The pekins are savage without them.

DS(4) loves dinos and is chuffed to bits he he has post historic raptors 😁

TheChampagneGalop · 06/10/2018 22:56

There’s no fucking reasoning with them. They are too fucking big and entitled.

Grin

What about this small, cute one though?
