How do you make your house smell nice?

Just that really! I think just opening the windows is the best way but with winter approaching I thought I might try something else. I usually have scented candles lit in the evenimg in the autumn/winter but the smell doesbt really linger & the good ones are pretty ££.

Thanks in advance Smile

Open the windows, even for 30 minutes. Nothing beats fresh air.

I use a reed diffuser in the downstairs bathroom - there's no window just an extractor fan - I like it to smell of something!

'Where do people get big packs of bicarb for cleaning I only ever see tiny baking sized pots'

@gingercat02 is there a savers near you? You can get a box for 99p and a little goes a long way I find.

I love my wax melt burner but only use it when the house is clean. I use a mix of water and vinegar with essential oils to clean and find the smell really lingers but it just smells fresh, not overpowering. I liked peppermint or rosemary in the summer (IMO rosemary is a seriously underused home scent!) and thieves blend now the winter is coming. I just bought some vanilla essential oil so really excited to use that and I think I'm going to try making a 'pumpkin spice' essential oil mix and see how that turns out!

Please don't use zoflora!

It make me physically sick when used, my own mother had to throw it away as I could barely enter the house when she'd used it.

Yes to wax melts

Also ambi pur 3velution , worth paying the money I'd say.

Unless you're planning on coming to my house, I'll use it, thanks. I love it.

Actually hell, even if you were, I'd use it. Seeing as it's my house and all that.

I like to put a couple of drops of essential oil on a damp cloth on the radiator in winter...lovely, non toxic way of getting the house to smell delightful.
I also sprinkle a few drops on the hoover bag, which throws out a lovely smell when I use it.

Open the windows.
Keep everything clean
Throw out rubbish regularly.
Air the beds thoroughly.
Bicard and white vinegar down all the plugholes a couple of times a week.

Anything synthetic or bleachy makes me want to vom.

Ok...

Thanks to this thread I’ve just bought an ultrasonic diffuser (using my Boots points) my house smells amazing with a few drops of lavender oil in it.

Conseulabananahammock · 07/10/2018 13:26

Ooh mix essential oils in the bicarb, sprinkle on your carpets. Leave as long as you can and Hoover... lush! I have an electric wax melter in the kitchen and in my living room. Stairs are open plan so the living room one carries the smell upstairs. Plug ins in every room downstairs but just on low. Wipe radiators with essential oils. Keep dog clean. Basically relentless cycle just so nothing offends my nose.

Thank you so much everyone! So many good tips on here :)

I love the smell of Zoflora and use that for everything.

Also Reed diffusers from Aldi are good along with fresh air in house all year.

I don't use plug in air fresheners after I read somewhere linking them to Cancer.

FannyFlapping · 08/10/2018 11:20

How do you mix essential oils into bicarb? Doesn't it just go all clumpy?

I used to wipe down radiators with lavender oil but we replaced all our steel radiators with cast irons which you can't get wet Sad

I had some hypnotherapy and the lady had a sort of steam/burner thing that seemed to puff out a mist (a bit like the ones they use at spas?) - can anyone recommend one of those?

My sense of smell is changing I think, I used to love the sort of chemically perfume ‘cleaning products’ smell but now I hate it. What I’d really love is a lemon or lime scented something that smells real not chemical, so if anyone can recommend that as well?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/10/2018 13:31

It's an ongoing battle for me as I have a dog and a cat and love a nice smelling house.

Vacuum and mop daily
Wash dog bed weekly
Open windows
Throw leftover food in green bin
Change beds weekly
Have lots of candles around downstairs
Wash cushions and throws regularly ( pets sleep on sofas )

flubbadubble · 08/10/2018 13:37

I just hoover every day and have some windows open pretty much all the time. In the winter I have an Aldi reed defuser on the top shelf in the bathroom. It's the only place I can put it with a toddler in the house.

prettygreywalls · 08/10/2018 13:54

Open windows and let fresh air in , all the rest smells like you are masking something

SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 14:02

Clean and airing.

Adding flavours just means you get a nice (sometimes) smell overlaid on the one you're trying to hide. It might seem okay in the moment, but it's not fixing anything.

Friends went through a phase of some orange spice glade plugin type thing, always has to was all my clothes after spending a couple of hours round there for a chat! Awful.

I open windows year round, use zoflora to mop floors and clean surfaces, I love the Scentsy wax burners and melts they really linger and freshen the rooms.

Hoover regularly and since changing to a shark vacuum my carpets seem fresher

Question for those who use zoflora on curtains sofa, is this safe? As in will it now mark my sofa etc? Interested to use it for this also
