Ds 9 has really bad BO

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 04/10/2018 11:24

How do I tackle this? He showers every other day and that’s a task and a half. He moans and whines about it. He used his dads shower gel but even after a shower he still smells sometimes. He refuses to let me in the room with him even though I have a few times lately to make sure he’s doing it properly. He is, but it still smells!

It’s his armpits and honestly it’s gross. He smells like a grown man with really bad bo. We have roll on, but it seems to be because he’s doing a lot of sports at school.

What can I use to help tackle this?

Ditch the shower gel and get him to wash well with a bar of soap.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 04/10/2018 11:30

He either showers everyday on his own or you bath him every night.

Swap the deodorant for an antiperspirant. Keep swapping till you find one that works.

I found shower gels, especially fruity ones, made me a bit wiffy. The Dove one is much better, or else go to bar soap as suggested.

Shield soap. Used with a shower puff thing - really scrub those pits!

Mitchum for Men antiperspirant. If that doesn't work, try Driclor (at Boots).

KathDayKnight50 · 04/10/2018 11:33

Cotton tops. No polyester!

MintyJones · 04/10/2018 11:33

Bath or shower daily. Use soap as opposed to shower gel. Apply a decent roll on deodorant. Job done

SummerStrong · 04/10/2018 11:38

Soap, not shower gel.

Decent antiperspirant.

Clean shirt every day.

stellabird · 04/10/2018 11:38

Ditch the shower gel - it's not heavy duty enough. Get the soap and a shower puff, and teach him to scrub under his arms and in his groin. Do this every day - 48 hours is way too long. And use Mitchum antiperspirant - deodorant is too weak.

stellabird · 04/10/2018 11:40

If he doesn't want you in there with him, get his father to go in with him. He obviously needs some lessons and maybe a man would impress him more at this point.

Charlottesshoezzzz · 04/10/2018 11:40

OP I had the same problem.

I started washing armpits & feet with actual soap as found showergel wasn't cleaning me properly.

Also from personal experience started using Perspirex ( from boots ) as I found Driclor too painful to use. Armpits have to be really dry, apply before bed a couple of hours after showering, it worked for me! I honestly can't remember the last time I felt sweaty/smelt of BO, please note I have always had 2 showers a day & wear clean clothes daily still I could smell BO. Awful problem as I am such a clean person so I couldn't understand it! I guess some people just perspire more than others.

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2018 11:42

Ideally Mitchum 24hr roll on onto dry skin after a bath/shower.

You could have a look at his diet and see if that makes a difference if you find you eat a lot of spices (cumin makes everyone smell terrible!) or onions/garlic.

Make sure his clothes haven’t developed armpits of unfixbale death BO, won’t help at all. You might have some success with white vinegar/bicarbonate but if it’s ingrained I think it’s usually hopeless.

Xocaraic · 04/10/2018 11:48

Shower every day - even a second shower in the morning if he is still whiffy.
Soap. Scrub feet, pits and groin.
Hair, wash twice until you know it's squeaky clean.
Look at his diet and consider a very good, child suitable, food quality probiotic. I can't tell you the difference this made to my 11 year old son!
Oh and no polyester. Cotton only. Clean Cotton pants too and only cotton Pjs.

Rebecca36 · 04/10/2018 11:49

Make sure he showers or bathes every day and uses an antiperspirant. I started mine on a quite good, mild one at the same age and it worked.

Rebecca36 · 04/10/2018 11:50

Meant to say, morning, before going to school. Good habit that he will use for the rest of his life.

NonaGrey · 04/10/2018 11:53

Shower every day and again if he’s played sports. Non negotiable.

Use a decent antiperspirant and clean clothes every day.

YeTalkShiteHen · 04/10/2018 11:55

Shower daily, with sports type shower gel or soap, Mitchum roll on, clean shirt/top daily.

RoseDog · 04/10/2018 11:59

Shower everyday, use soap rather than shower gel, my ds likes a lynx manwasher rather than a flannel or sponge, an antiperspirant deodrant, ds likes the loreal men expert, clean clothes and make sure you are washing his tshirts properly, sometimes a quick wash at 30 degrees isnt enough for sweat!

newhousenewstart · 04/10/2018 12:23

My DSs were the opposite of grubby. However I remember my Mum having to actually sniff my brothers armpits after a shower to make sure they hadn’t just run the water without getting in!
He has one or two showers a day with soap and sadly you may need to revert to making sure he’s actually washing and rinsing off properly

cantsleepwithnofan · 04/10/2018 13:09

He has to shower every day. My ds stinks at times, I smell him after he has showered and quite often send him back in. Clean shirts every day, and shower after sport. I can't imagine the pong if he showered every other day.

VintageFur · 04/10/2018 13:14

Soap not gel. Gel doesn't actually clean - just slimes the skin. Soap actually removes dirt.

allyouneedis · 04/10/2018 13:16

Use bar soap instead of shower gel and a sensitive roll on deodorant. Will he let you in if he keeps his bottoms on and do his pits over the sink twice a day?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 04/10/2018 13:17

I have two whiffy 9 year old boys, they are showered under supervision every day. They can’t be trusted to scrub well enough (or not flood the bathroom) otherwise.

They use a Dove dry stick deodorant as roll on takes ages to dry and sprays will just get used up too quickly by messing about. Seems to work well so far.

I wouldn’t go for Mitchum or Driclor right off the bat, it’s much more likely he’s not washing well enough than he’s just an excessive stinky sweater at this age!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 04/10/2018 13:17

Oh yes and I agree, use soap instead of shower gel.

Tinty · 04/10/2018 13:24

Definitely make him shower every day and use soap. The girls at my DD's school in yr 5 used to complain about the boys that really smelt of BO and they weren't happy if they had to work with them. So it isn't just you who have to put up with the whiff, his classmates will also have to put up with it and it is horrible.

MinaPaws · 04/10/2018 13:25

Why is bar soap better? The only time I've ever smelled was a few months ago when I smelled like vomit all the time and worked out it's because I'd switeched from shower gel to an expensive Jo malone bar soap given to me as a gift. On me it smelled like baby puke.
