Housewarming Gift

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 16:27

My son and his girlfriend have just moved into a rented house together. DH and I will visit at their invitation in the next couple of weeks (250 miles away).
I want to bring a housewarming gift but my son is not expressing any wants or needs " Mum, we are fine, we don't need a thing".
I've offered a fridge, a lawn mower, a coffee machine, etc which is met with " no, just come" Grin.
I know I don't have to provide a gift but I really want to.

I remember when DH and I had our first home and I loved the thoughtful stuff people gave us.

The question is what sort of gift can I give them that wouldn't matter if it was duplicated?

No point in giving a slow cooker for example if they already have one.

A lovely vase and fresh flowers to go in it.

And then a hamper of delicious foods and drinks.

And depending on how much you want to spend, a voucher of some sort?
Homesense or Argos?

Lovely smelly set for her!
And rubber gloves for him!
And a pot plant!!

Houseplant
A subscription to Hello Fresh, Gusto, Netflix
An Ocado delivery with lots of nice bits n bobs you wouldn't normally buy yourself

Box of nice wine to fill their wine rack if they drink?

On a more housey front one thing I wish I'd got years ago is one of these cordless screwdrivers:
amzn.eu/d/eeNcyFv
(needs a battery/charge as well)
Makes flatpack furniture assembly a doddle.

Hamper!

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 16:42

Like the ideas of plants and vases. He's a chef so the food themed gifts may not float his boat. He does the majority of cooking.

Tea towels!

Wine, wine glasses and some yummy nibbles. Oooooooh.

Some flowers and a vase for them to go in, or a luxury candle instead...

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 16:49

I think they may possibly drink (lol) so wine is a good suggestion thanks.

Pot plant and a big Yankee candle. Just get a fresh one like baby powder or something.

Pot plants are nice to have in the home, if he's a chef maybe an aloe Vera for the kitchen (incase of burns)

Yankee candles are lovely to use, known for being expensive but also not something that you wouldn't use/have in the house.

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 17:00

Candles seem like a nice idea. The landlord also lives with them so may not be an issues. I've rented a couple of times and candles were a no no.

Bottle or two of champagne
Case of nice wine
Orchid
A voucher for John Lewis or other approved homeware place

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 17:07

Although my default is vouchers, his granny has given him vouchers and I've given him cash for a birthday recently so I want something concrete.

If he is a chef, how about something like a sous vide

What about an electric Yankee wax burner and a selection of wax mets/tarts

I've bought a few for different people and they've loved them and gone on to buy others for people too x

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 03/10/2018 17:14

Or one of these egg bbq things.
Like the green egg one (but they cost ££££)

What about a nice photo frame? They could put a nice pic of themselves up in their new home

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 17:20

Yes, photo frame is good. They like looking at photos of themselves. Ha!

A set of screwdrivers - lightbulbs - those little sticky felt things you put on chair legs - anti-moth blocs

Hippychick78 · 03/10/2018 17:57

He may cook but does he bake??? I always bake something depending on the person's tastes. Framed photos are definitely a great idea.

Wine or a nice bottle of booze for the house possibly??? We would really appreciate a nice bottle of rum or whiskey but it really all depends on budget and how much they drink

Finfintytint · 03/10/2018 21:06

Not sure he bakes so a nice cake would be good. Think his girlfriend does though.
Lots of great ideas thanks.

Do they already have two lots of most things? What’s their income like? Do they have their own space or share with the landlord? How old are they? etc. All makes a HUGE difference.

Hippychick78 · 03/10/2018 21:32

I can highly recommend this cake for an occasion

www.womansown.co.uk/food/mary-berrys-very-best-chocolate-fudge-cake-9269/

Instead of heating the jam I put it on the warm cake... And add way more than the recipe suggests

Let us know what you decide

Vouchers! Everyone needs money 🤣
