What do your kids call step grandparents?

DM died before DC's were born and DF has remarried. Step mum has been in the DC's lives since before they were born but they call her by her first name. People find this odd but everyone's happy with it as step mum said from the off she would never replace their nan and that way when the kids ask about their nan in heaven it's easier to just say nan and know who they're talking about.

So, what do your kids call their step nan/grandad? Is it by names or by the title of nan/grandad?

My step son calls my parents by their first names. He has both sets of grandparents involved and they can be quite sensitive so we were keen not to step on any toes. He's fine with it and very much sees them as my parents who also come to see him and bring him bits and bobs.

I call my stepdad by his first name but DD calls him Grandpa. My dad died before she was born so she's only ever known one Grandpa on that side of the family. I called my stepdad's parents Grandma and Grandpa.

My step-siblings' children, DD's cousins, call all their grandparents Grandma/Grandpa Firstname, as there are several step- and bio- GPs and they want to distinguish between individuals but not status, if that makes sense.

think it's Polish or other east European
It's German.

By their first names.
They already have biological grandparents in their lives and are lucky to have an extra set but having 4 granny’s/nanny’s and 4 grandads would be confusing Grin
Plus, both dp and I had our own parents in our lives for our whole lives (although both sets of parents divorced when we were children) and didn’t call our step parents ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ so it would feel weird.

I called my ‘step’ grandad Grampy as he was the only grandad I knew on that side. My mums dad hasn’t been in contact with her since she was a young teen. My grandad was never her step dad as she was too old for that when my Nan married him but she was happy for me to treat him as my ‘real’ Grampy.

Grumps.

DD calls step-grandad and step great-grandad "grandad"

This got me thinking.......

My DF isn't married to his partner, but even if he was DS would still just call her by her first name.

But my DF isn't really my DF, he's my step DF but DS calls him Grandad!!!

Seems a total contradiction??!!

When I think about it I guess it boils down to what YOU call your DFs wife?

My DF married my DM when I was a toddler, he's the only Dad I've ever known so to me he is my Dad in all but DNA. I call him Dad and DS calls him Grandad.

By contract DFs partner has only been around 10 year or so, even if they were married I don't consider her "a mum" to me she's just a very dear friend. She's been around all of DSs life but she's still not his Grandma to me IYSWIM?

I'm not sure I've explained that very well at all.......

Contrast not contract!

My parents are granny and grandad, the kids dads parents are nana and grandpa and the step parents are grandad Adam and nanny Eve.

anniehm · 04/10/2018 08:05

First names for the step grandparents. We call them by their first names and refer to them by first names to the kids. The four actual grandparents are the ones given the Nanna and grandad titles

BlancheM · 04/10/2018 08:09

Grandma/granddad but when speaking about them to me or others, 'my step grandma said...', 'my step granddad did this..'

YeTalkShiteHen · 04/10/2018 08:14

My DSDs call my Dad (and did call my Mum when she was alive) by their names, DS1 calls his SMs Dad by his name too.

I think if your kids are happy with their choice that’s the most important thing, and I also think it’s right that your SM gives your DM her place and doesn’t try to overstep. She sounds lovely.

My dad isn’t with anyone, Mum only died last year, but if he ever did I’d be happy for him, although I think I’d draw the line at her being called Grannie because that was my Mum and DPs late Mum. Granda is my Dad and Pops (inside joke) is DPs late Dad.
