I have high blood sugar and I need to quit the sugar before I end up diabetic. I'm not overweight but I just love sweet stuff. Anyone done this? Can I just cut down or do I need to cut it out completely?

Funny, I’ve just commented on another thread about the same thing! I gave up sugar in January (I do still have very occasional birthday cake etc) but mostly have gone ‘cold turkey’. If you have high blood sugars, have you considered the Blood sugar diet? If you don’t have weight to lose you don’t need to restrict calories, but you reduce carbohydrates and sugar and it can reverse prediabetes and T2 diabetes.

I think I bought that book actually. I'm not Very good at following specific diets I might just try going cold turkey on all sweet things although I will really miss them! Can't imagine never having chocolate or cake again. Or hot chocolate or nice puddings. :(

Dooby honestly, I was the same. I was the classic exhausted sugar addict, always on a diet and then would scoff whole packets of hobnobs while cooking dinner. I never ever thought I could live without it!

The book is quite readable, and informative about how sugar works in your body and has various ‘plans’ for different types of people. I’ve lost nearly 3 stone doing it but now I’m not trying to lose weight really anymore I try to follow the basic principles, and I do allow occasional sweet things. It’s ruined chocolate for me though, it just tastes of greasy sugar now.

Hi,

Thanny flaps here. Pleased to meet you.

Could I join you on your fight against the devils dandruff or as "the media" call it - sugar. I love the stuff. The trouble is I get hungry for food but then I get a different kind of hungry - sugar hungry. It's like having a 400 pound gorilla on my back sometimes

Co-op do these "fruity" cookies which one would think might count as your five a day.. but no! They may as well be cocaine cookies for all I care

What's your plans on how to cut down on the marching powder?

Thanny (Flaps)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 13:46

Thanny the devils dandruff!!! Love it!

Doobydoobydooyeh · 02/10/2018 14:08

My plan is basically just saying no! :(

I started the other thread about sugar. I'm fed up of feeling crap with pcos and terrible bowels so I'm going to try it

Doobydoobydooyeh · 02/10/2018 14:19

I get very tired too and I'm sure sugar doesn't help.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 14:28

Furry I have (had) pcos and I have reduced my hormones (testosterone and LH) numbers down to the normal range in 9 months of being off the sugar.

thannyflaps · 02/10/2018 14:29

Are you guys saying sugar in our diets makes us tired?

I get crashes at points throughout the day which I'm wondering is due to sugar?

InfiniteSheldon · 02/10/2018 14:32

Can I join in I started a thread about giving up sugar in the menopause section but it's pretty quiet. tomorrow will mark 3 weeks, I've just gone cold turkey on refined sugar so no cakes, biscuits or sweets I also swopped to low baked beans. Cutting out sweet chilli sauce ketchup anything that's obviously got sugar in it. I had the most awful headaches at first but I'm feeling so much better I can't believe it. It's my birthday in 3 weeks so I'm definitely doing it till then and hoping that cheese and cheese boards will replace cakes.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 19:22

Well done Sheldon!
I think sugar plays havoc with my hormones and the high and lows are heightened by sugars I'm sure

Strokethefurrywall · 02/10/2018 19:39

Soooooo, I gave up processed foods a while back as my sugar demon (Dave as I've named him), is a particularly ferocious son of a bitch.

I'm a little on the extreme side because in order to slay Dave, I have quit alcohol, processed sugar, processed carbs (and a bunch of other stuff that isn't related to sugar, like grains, bread, rice etc) in order to get him off my back.

Sugar creates cravings. So when you eat something for breakfast, your blood sugar goes up, your body releases insulin, 3-4 hours later (or 2-3 hours) you use up your blood sugar and then you get hit with a craving, or if you're like me, you get hit with a reactive hypoglycemic episode in a grocery store.

So to keep the cravings at bay (often disguised as just general hunger), you eat some more food, sometimes healthy, sometimes just another donut, and around and you go.

If you quit the sugar cold turkey, within about 3-4 days your cravings are slayed. At the beginning of my elimination diet, I cut out everything including all fruit except for berries every other evening after dinner, because fruit would instantly trigger a sugar craving!

Now I'm a good while into it, I can eat fruit on occasion (which isn't a big deal as I'm not a massive fruit fan) or a larabar (which gives me gas more than it makes me crave) but it took a little experimentation to see what triggered me the quickest. A banana, for example, sends me straight into a bag of haribo for some reason.

Anyway, aside from the fact that my entire way of eating sounds utterly miserable to most, I can attest to the fact that I am happier than I've EVER been. I didn't realise HOW MUCH sugar had an impact on my moods, on my sense of self, on my self control. Without sugar, my moods are totally level, I am far more patient, I love love love how I wake up feeling every single day. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I haven't had a single 'bad day' in the last 2-3 months. I've also, as a side effect, lost a shit ton of weight even though I didn't need to.

If it's something you want to undertake , I would highly recommend doing so, if only so other people feel the amazing effects that I've had. Do some googling, there are many different ways or 'diets' out there - I basically adopt a relatively strict ketogenic diet and also don't eat dairy, grains, gluten, soy etc etc. I'm not evangelical about it and my kids/husband eat a pretty SAD but I'm going to gradually move the kids over to less processed crap if only for the mental clarity and ability to sleep properly and concentrate!

Anyway, TL:DR - I slayed Dave stone dead. He's a goner!

Strokethefurrywall · 02/10/2018 19:47

Fuck me that was long - sorry everyone.

Are you guys saying sugar in our diets makes us tired?

Yes, that is EXACTLY right. The only tiredness I feel now is the lovely ache in my body that I get after a particularly hard run. I sleep amazingly well and am refreshed every day.

I did a Whole30 in 2013 (my first whole30) which is essentially a total elimination body reset in which you cut out sugar, processed foods, alcohol, dairy, grain, gluten, yada yada yada for 30 days without cheating. At the end of the 30 days you start to introduce gradually those external foods to see if you notice any inflammation in your body, or bad reactions. Then you know to keep those foods to a minimum or leave them out of your diet entirely.

I bloat something rotten and get dreadful stomach pains if I eat bread or pasta. Which, when your dream is to move to France and live on fresh bread, brie and red wine is something of a downer. But I know the effect they have on me so I rarely eat them.

Anyway, when I did the whole30 the first time, I'd had a uterine scan a few months previously - turns out I had Poly-cystic ovaries (about 8-9 cysts on each ovary) but no symptoms of the syndrome. After the 30 days, my periods lengthened from 25 days to 28 days and when I went back for a check up with my OBGYN, the cysts had disappeared to 1 on the left ovary and 2 on the right. Now they've gone entirely. I attribute that completely down to cutting out the shit from my diet.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 20:30

What about low sugar alcohol?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 20:45

I drink red wine which is apparently the lowest in fructose. I don’t like beer or cider anyway, but it’s probably best to avoid them. You can have spirits and diet mixers if you’re ok with sweeteners (although fevertree is sweetened with fructose so I’d stick to Schweppes/traditional diet tonic) - in moderation though, same as with any diet?

InfiniteSheldon · 03/10/2018 20:15

I drink tequila with fresh line juice had to give up wine once the menopause took hold. i haven't found fruit a problem I am hoping it's just refined sugar i need to cut out but I try not to overeat bananas grapes etc anyway. Today marked three weeks with no cakes, biscuits etc and I feel so much better haven't wanted to kill dh once Grin and definitely got more energy. Interestingly my joint pains are drastically reduced too my feet and ankles used to hurt so much I struggled to sleep. It's getting easier the better I feel.

FurryAndObnoxious · 03/10/2018 20:33

Sheldon it's the joint pain that kills me Since I've been on mat leave my joins hurts and I eat alot more sugar than I should!

InfiniteSheldon · 05/10/2018 14:32

Had a bit of an accident with raisins and those are definitely not going to work for me, mind you three handfuls was excessive. Still on track with no biscuits/cakes though

Honeyroar · 05/10/2018 14:42

Can I join too? I started this January 2017 and by September 2017 had lost two stones and two dress sizes. Purely by cutting out sugar and processed foods. I still ate loads of fruit and carbs. I didn't have any plan, just avoiding the above. However from Sept 2017 I've had the year from hell and various immediate relatives have been seriously ill, so I fell off the waggon - mostly because I was so hungry when I got back late for hospital. I've put it all back on and have got to get back in control. I'm eating loads of sweets and choc again.

InfiniteSheldon · 05/10/2018 18:00

Oh that is motivating Honey what's great weight loss i don't want to demonize carbs either they've always been fine for me I just want to cut out refined sugar really.

Honeyroar · 05/10/2018 22:36

If you're on Facebook there's a page called I Quit Sugar that is very useful. They do an 8 week plan you can pay to sign up to. I never paid, but they have a lot of useful questions and answers on their page, plus hints and recipes.

It was so easy, and I'm such a chocoholic. I never got the cold turkey symptoms other people did (perhaps because I still ate fruit and carbs) yet I could easily walk past chocolate (can't at all usually!). The weight came off my face, waist and legs mostly and I lost inches before weight initially.

Doobydoobydooyeh · 06/10/2018 15:54

It's not been going that well. So for lunch today I thought I would have something really nice and savoury so had garlic mushrooms and boursin on toast. Amazing.

FurryAndObnoxious · 06/10/2018 21:20

I've had diarrhoea again today and horrendous wind. the sugar withdrawal is bad with headaches and thirst. I've bought some kefir meant to help with gut bacteria.
