Are you microwaveless?

Our current microwave is ready for the tip. I’m very tempted to not buy a new one. Does anyone else cope just fine without one? I do use it everyday for warming up milk for my children but could easily switch to a pan. The only food I cook in it is the rare occasions I use a microwave pouch of rice. I don’t want to spend £60+ on a machine just to warm up milk!

I've never had one. Warm things up in the oven or on the job. It's not a healthy thing to have!

MustStopSnacking28 · 01/10/2018 21:03

We only bought one so we could get a microwave steriliser for DS bottles. Managed fine for four years without one before that and we don’t really use it for much else now! I wouldn’t bother getting a new one if it broke.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/10/2018 21:03

Haven’t had one in years. I hate them. Don’t have the space in the kitchen, don’t need one, can’t see the point.

Set yourself free OP!

I haven't had one since moving out of my childhood home 17 years ago. Originally because my kitchen was tiny but we got used to being without and now I can't think of anything I'd use one for.

DangerMouse17 · 01/10/2018 21:03

On the hob*

Bloody autocorrect Hmm

cupidsabsolutepsyche · 01/10/2018 21:04

Haven't had one for years, no room! We manage just fine, using hob, oven and slow cooker 😊

dementedpixie · 01/10/2018 21:05

We use ours for defrosting and reheating and to start off baked potato/ sweet potato, etc

ApplestheHare · 01/10/2018 21:05

We haven't got one. Never miss having one either!

Bunnyhop1502 · 01/10/2018 21:06

You’ve swayed me. The microwave is outta here!

Got rid of mine 2 years ago. Don't miss it

Bunnyhop1502 · 01/10/2018 21:06

Is it sad that I’m looking forward to the extra counter space?

Killerqueen2244 · 01/10/2018 21:07

We’ve managed for a few years without one, the only thing I miss is melting ice cream or starting off my jackets but no biggie!

RedPandaMama · 01/10/2018 21:07

Microwaves aren't £60+ Dunelm have some fine ones for £30-40.

I wasn't bothered and lived without one for 2 years but it's been endlessly useful in the last year since having DD:-
Warming up milk
Reheating coffee/tea I didn't get chance to drink
Ready meals in the early days when BFing constantly and having no chance to cook
Melting cheese
Heating baby food mush
Reheating meals DD has left (e.g todays lunch pasta was left and reheated to become dinner!)
A place for DD to post things - found a stack of tupperware boxes in it this afternoon! We have it low down in the pantry so she likes to 'play' with it...

But yeah if your kids are past baby stages most of my points are redundant Grin

Peachpebbles · 01/10/2018 21:07

Only use ours to speed up cooking jacket potatoes. Everything else is the hob or oven.

purplecorkheart · 01/10/2018 21:08

I cannot remember the last time I used mine.

Jenijena · 01/10/2018 21:08

Haven’t had one for 12 years, when we moved here and the kitchen was smaller.

There’s probably about 10-12 times a year when I think “oh, if I had a microwave I could do x easier” but it’s geberally fine. Moving soon though and if the new kitchen has enough space I might get one.

OvO · 01/10/2018 21:09

I don’t use mine a lot and none of it is needed as I could use the hob but it’s definitely handy so I’d rather have one than not.

There’s always a few on my local Facebook selling page for about £10 so if you do decide you need one I’d look there first.

Bunnyhop1502 · 01/10/2018 21:09

I know you can get cheaper ones but the last two cheapies we bought have lasted a year or two so if I did buy another it would be an “investment”! However, I’m not buying a new one. No more cleaning those horrible crusty bits!

Binned ours a week ago and not missing it at all!

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 01/10/2018 21:09

We got rid of ours once DD no longer needed sterilised bottles, don’t miss it at all. She occasionally likes some warm cows milk but I do it in the Nespresso aerocino milk frother- it’s super quick and easy!

Polkapjs · 01/10/2018 21:11

I’d keep mine going just on microwave rice. And I reheat my brews more than I’d like to admit so mine is staying but if you don’t reheat a lot, you’d be ok I think!

SausageSimon · 01/10/2018 21:14

I like mine for defrosting as I love to batch cook! It's handy for jacket potatoes and for heating frozen veg. I could live without but wouldn't Grin

Littlemissdemeanour · 01/10/2018 21:16

Yes, because I hate clutter in the kitchen!

I heat things up in oven/ heat milk choc up on hob.

Don't miss it AND one less thing to clean!

Don't have a toaster either; I have a grill Grin

MyNewBearTotoro · 01/10/2018 21:17

I bought one for the first time in years last month. It was only £35 from Asda. I was happy without one for years but I’ve used it loads since I got it - warming up drinks, warming up leftovers, microwave meals and cakes. Very useful if you’re pressed for time - much easier than the hob.

TheBookThief · 01/10/2018 21:19

Binned ours a couple of years ago when one morning while cooking porridge both DS and I had a sudden painful headache Shock
Off it went to the tip/recycling centre and we've managed fine without since.
I probably miss it most for starting off Jacket pots, warming milk, melting choc and those pouches of rice. But the sudden headache thing really freaked me out so I'm not getting another!
