Random question - have you heard of Folksy?

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 16:49

Just that really - trying to work out how well known it is.

If you've shopped there, what do you think?

If you're a shop owner, how do you find it?

If you've never heard of it, have you heard of Etsy?

Thanks Smile

Yes. Folksy etsy and notonthehighstreet usually come as an all in one suggestion.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 01/10/2018 16:51

I've not heard of Folksy but have heard of (and used) Etsy

fanomoninon · 01/10/2018 16:52

Heard of it, visited a couple of times, not bought. I do buy from etsy though, and that's certainly better known/established for me (although I slightly feel etsy is less interesting and crafty than it used to be)

SuperstarDJ · 01/10/2018 16:55

Yes have heard of it but have never bought from there. Have bought quite a bit from Etsy & NOTHS but tend to be directed there from a business sellers instagram/FB Page - they are so vast you have to search through a lot of dross if I head there directly and use the search function.

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 17:13

Thank you all.

fanomoninon may I ask why you didn't purchase from Folksy? Was the site difficult, or couldn't you find the item you wanted?

SuperstarDJ may I ask why you haven't used it, if you like buying handmade?

I'm just curious why Folksy isn't as popular as Etsy?

Heard of it, never bought, and just been reminded of it by this. Wouldn't occur to me to go look there, just not really on my radar iuswim.

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 17:17

I completely understand SpongeBobJudgeyPants thanks.

Fab username btw, I'm now singing that in my head Grin

TBh, I can't remember, but I just went back and searched for a couple of the items I know I've bought on etsy (one jewellery, one clothing) and one I'm planning, and for all three, there's nothing like the range on folksy around each of the 'themes' vs etsy - so I suspect that's why. (eg. I want an armadillo/pangollin themed gift, etsy has loads: folksy has a couple...)

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 17:36

fanomoninon thanks for going to the trouble of checking. I really appreciate it. And yes, Etsy is so much bigger so often more choice

Yeah heard of it, but not as on my radar as Etsy. I usually look at
NOTHS for inspiration, but then look for something similar on Etsy as I think it’s better priced.

justpoppingby · 01/10/2018 17:43

I used to sell on folksy a good few years back but it wasn't worth my effort in the end.
Also used Etsy but you need to do quite a lot of promoting to get noticed as well.
I eventually found small shops to take my stuff as I was spending more time photographing and writing up things than making and selling.

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 17:46

That's interesting justpoppingby can I ask what you make?

Thanks Katya

Yes, I've heard it's the UK version of Etsy. TBH I have never bought from either, but I've browsed Etsy more often and thought about buying more. You can specify country so I'm not sure Folksy is needed.

DearTeddyRobinson · 01/10/2018 18:23

Nope never heard of it. Does it sell sort of macrame type stuff? That's what the name makes me think of!

Didiusfalco · 01/10/2018 18:25

I’ve heard of folksy and bought from Etsy. I’ve just had a quick look at it again and I think it’s quite hard to filter the results and when I did a search some of the results it brought up were a bit strange.

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 18:41

DearTeddyRobinson it sells homemade craft of all types, but yes I'm sure there's probably macrame there Grin

Thanks Didiusfalco that's interesting

I've heard of Folksy but I make craft items for sale. I haven't visited the site though. I use Etsy and EBay. I would use Folksy if I thought it would be worth it but, at busy periods, e.g. before Christmas, it is all I can do to keep up with the demand I get from etsy and EBay.

Isn't Folksy just UK? Most of my customers come from the US, Canada and Australia.

hmmwhatatodo · 01/10/2018 18:56

Yes, I’ve heard of it. I think of it as the even more Home made type stuff than Etsy. I haven’t bought from it, no particular reason, I just happened to find something I liked more on Etsy. I have stopped shopping online now in a bid to save money (also don’t do much ‘real life’ shopping other than the essentials).

HormoanalGrumblebum · 01/10/2018 19:00

Dumbledoresgirl I' m not certain, but I believe they restrict the crafters to UK only, but can sell anywhere

Thanks hmmwhatatodo

I had heard of it but never bought from there. I've just had another look and searched Halloween, and most of the results that come up are either ridiculously priced or really crap.

I'll stick to Etsy.

ToadOfSadness · 01/10/2018 19:41

I have heard of it, a few years ago I looked at it several times, it appeared to be a poor copy of Etsy with not much for sale, maybe it has improved but I prefer the choice on Etsy.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/10/2018 20:02

It used to be big back when Etsy was heavily US. When Etsy opened up more to the U.K., both for crafters and better shipping and pricing for buyers, it put paid to Folksy a bit - I can't have visited in five or so years; but I've just had a poke around after seeing this thread and it doesn't seem to changed much.

With Etsy having such huge choice and NOTHS stealing the "unique" angle, it doesn't really have a USP.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 01/10/2018 20:12

Never heard of it. Have used Etsy.

Got a great necklace on Etsy. 🦅

justpoppingby · 01/10/2018 20:38

Ah op I have many strings to my bow. Lol
I used to make a wide variety of home decor items from quilts and blankets, cushions etc to pottery, jewellery..all sorts. I still do but limited to personal orders now by word of mouth.

TheSageofOnions · 01/10/2018 20:41

Never heard of it. Have heard of, but never used, Etsy.
