Londoners/anyone - help! How feasible and easy is it to walk between the British Library

For reasons not really understood by me I have been landed with running a school trip to London. They will be visiting the British Library and need somewhere to go reasonably nearby where they can have free time and 'a sense of London'. Covent Garden has been suggested as being a 20 minute walk away, but I can't work out whether it's an easy 20 minutes or endless twists and turns.

If anyone can help I'll be eternally grateful.

You could walk them along the Euston road to Reagents Park, it’s about a 15 minute walk and you can see parts of the zoo, used to be the wolf enclosure, but it may have all moved around.
Depends on time of year and how much free time they would have.
I would say it’s a good 30 minutes walk to Covent Garden, but if you go through Bloomsbury, not just along Gower street it could be an interesting walk.

There haven't been wolves st the Zoo for many years. I still say St P and Kings X

cestlavielife · 30/09/2018 22:04

Walk along to kings cross pat offices of YouTube Google and Facebook around a nice square then up to granary sq

cestlavielife · 30/09/2018 22:04

Past Google and Facebook offices

leghoul · 30/09/2018 22:05

Yes granary square that's it..

Either go up via St Pancras and youtube and Harry Potter to hang out near Kings x (lots of places to sit etc) or down towards Russell Square via Judd St then Leigh St to Marchmont Street, or Mabledon place, Cartwright gardens to marchmont st, then either lurk about around there in gardens or small shopping area or go out across Russell Square. If time, I'd turn left and head towards nice quiet street near corams fields Lamb's conduit street, then walk back using quiet streets again.

Davros · 30/09/2018 22:06

Yes but go through St P station to get from BL to KX

HuckfromScandal · 30/09/2018 22:07

It’s really really easy, most roads are not particularly busy, and a lovely walk through Russell Square,
I did it on Thursday, and live up in Scotland, so am not particularly offay with London and have the navigational talent of a blond hedgehog.

cestlavielife · 30/09/2018 22:07

Google UK Pancras square

theduchessstill · 30/09/2018 22:08

Been on Google and Kings Cross and Granary Square look amazing and just what they will enjoy. My only worry now is food - those places look lovely but very pricey. Does anyone know if there are affordable options around there? Maybe not Greggs but not £££ either.

Loads of food stalls plus chains like leon in kings x station

witchmountain · 30/09/2018 22:09

If you’re going to walk for 30 mins I’d go up the back of King’s Cross/ St Pancras to Granary Square and then walk along the canal to Camden market. The very last bit of the canal was closed a few weeks ago, not sure now, but worst case scenario is you’d have walk the last little bit on the street.

It’s a more interesting walk and more interesting destination in my my opinion!

I love Granary Square but I don’t think it would be great for that age. The restaurants are expensive. If you are there on a day when KERB are there with a street food market then food will be ok but there’s not much else for them - a handful of shops - Nike, Jigsaw, &Other Stories and Sweaty Betty, Carhartt

I know the area around the British Library very well. It is more than a 20 minute walk to CG. Maybe 30 mins. But bear in mind im a very unfit 40 year old! My advice would be to consider getting the 59 bus from opposite the BL on the other side of the road (near mabledon place). Or go round the corner to Upper Woburn Pl stop where you can also get 68 and 168.

It will turn into upper woburn place and then straight down past Tavistock Square , Russell Sq, Holborn Station. You could either get off at Holborn or Aldwych/Royal Courts of Justice or go another stop to Somerset House. Either stop will then be a short walk to CG.

If you look on google maps you'll see that once you get to upper woburn place it's just one long straight line by bus/walk towards kingsway/Holborn (though a few roads to cross) and then just a short walk towards Covent Garden.

Ive attached 59 bus route.

KERB are there Wed-Fri btw.

ledzepplintooasiseclectic · 30/09/2018 22:16

If I was taking school DC to London I would jump on either a bus or a tube and head to Trafalgar Square.... Buckingham palace a walk one way, Big Ben another , Leicester Square another and the strand...... proper London!

2anddone · 30/09/2018 22:17

There are a couple of McDonald's, five guys and Nando's all less than 5 mins walk from kings x station. You can see them from the pedestrian area outside the station so they shouldn't get lost!!

witchmountain · 30/09/2018 22:18

Oh and if you wanted a bus to Camden then you could get them from outside King’s Cross/St Pancras or Euston but it would be much more fun to walk.

witchmountain · 30/09/2018 22:19

Bear in mind how you’d be paying on a bus - they would all need a contactless card or an Oyster card or paper travel card. You can’t pay in cash at all.

frogsoup · 30/09/2018 22:21

I do this walk every day, twice, and I can tell you it is 25-30 minutes at a fair walking pace! Its nice enough as a walk (down Judd street and through queen's sq gardens, next to national neurology hospital - definitely not down Euston Rd and Kingsway!) but I certainly wouldn't attempt it with 40 school kids esp if you don't know the way! It's only a few stops to Covent Garden from kings X on the Piccadilly line, much safer bet.

frogsoup · 30/09/2018 22:23

(I am also over 40 but pretty fit Grin )
