I’m probably going to get reported a 100x for saying this, but I’m saying it anyway.

I really like Ed Sheeran - & especially Galway Girl.

There. I’ve said it.

I didn’t realise we weren’t openly allowed to like Ed or George. Is there a secret handshake for those who like them? Some sort of sanctuary where I can listen to them safely and not be judged?

Flairhead · 30/09/2018 13:27

I like Galway Girl.

There, I said it.

I'll be off now.....

KathDayKnight50 · 30/09/2018 13:29

Well, someone has to, OP Grin

Never mind. I like all sorts of embarrassing bands most people wouldn't admit to.

TwllBach · 30/09/2018 13:33

Sorry, but is the A Team song about drugs?? Class A Team... I thought it was about popularity??

Sgtmajormummy · 30/09/2018 13:33

I talked to a group of very astute 13yos about Ed Sheeran, some lovers some haters, and why he’s popular. Here are a few ideas:
He makes very little money from selling traditional CDs, knowing that people can download his music freely. So there are no hard feelings about pirating.
He tours a lot and his concerts are exciting age appropriate experiences for teenagers.

He has a MASSIVE following on social media and puts a lot of effort into building up his fanbase. He also appears for charities.

He’s a loser done good (see above) and his goofy appearance and self-deprecating sense of humour endear him to kids who may be struggling with their own looks.

He’s a reasonably talented musician who can sustain a concert on his own.

But most of all he speaks about raw teenage and young adult experiences (first love, unrequited love friendships, pregnancy...) which we can all relate to or look back on fondly.

So his fans come from all over. I don’t suppose he can keep it up much longer. A 50yo singing about those things would be ridiculous but I can imagine him turning into a National Treasure/figure of fun like a minor Paul McCartney.

ElspethFlashman · 30/09/2018 13:34

GG is brutal. And what I particularly dislike is the way he crams in 10x the amount of words in every line so it ends up sounding like very English spluttery machine gun fire.

Knittedfrog · 30/09/2018 13:49

I love him. I've got tickets to see him next year, can't wait!

BolleauxtoBankers · 30/09/2018 13:55

Yes TwllBach, The A Team is about drugs. (I know, because my daughter, who was 16 at the time, told me so when it came out.) I find that particular song of his immensely moving.
I also like George Ezra as my daughter plays him a lot nowadays, when she's home.

FunkyHeroCat · 30/09/2018 14:07

I used to really like him, he wrote most of his own music and came up via festivals and small gigs, but now he just seems to do slushy ballads which although he still has talent are just not my thing.

I liked things like because they've got quite a fast beat and have some decent lyrics.

stabbybitch · 30/09/2018 14:48

I love his song photograph, a few of his others I quite like too.

Ed & James blunt did a version of sacrifice which i think is amazing. Still prefer James blunt over Ed Sheeran though.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 30/09/2018 19:05

twilbach check the lyrics ... "go mad for a couple grams" "sells love to another man" yup she's prostituting herself to buy drugs. And presumably close to death (face crumbling, becoming an angel who flies) due to the effects. Jolly it's not.

LuckyDiamond · 30/09/2018 19:09

@trulybadlydeeply

particularly all the "to my old boyfriend" songs

Isn’t that all of them?

I imagine her ex shuts himself away in a darkened room every time she releases a new album.

trulybadlydeeply · 30/09/2018 19:39

@LuckyDiamond pretty much Grin

I regularly scream at her "he's moved on, why on earth can't you"!

surferjet · 30/09/2018 19:41

Ohhhh - George Ezra on strictly come dancing! ❤️

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 30/09/2018 19:52

So those of you who hate Ed, what music do you like?

SilverySurfer · 30/09/2018 20:17

I've never heard of him so no reporting by me.

amusedbush · 30/09/2018 20:51

I don’t mind Ed Sheeran. I was a MASSIVE fan several years ago, saw him live every time he was in Edinburgh or Glasgow but his stuff is definitely leaning towards bland now. I still like his most recent album but I can see that he’s churning out sappy songs with the wedding market in mind. He always seems a bit smug too 🤷🏻‍♀️

onceandneveragain · 30/09/2018 21:23

StealthPolarBear - I always wonder in that song, given that his gf is self-conscious enough to be worrying that she looks a mess, why doesn't he say his phrase "Darling you look perfect" OUT FUCKING LOUD to reassure her rather than "muttering underneath my breath"????

Also and his guest appearance on GOT was the cringiest of the cringe. In my mind his character was burnt alive by dragon several weeks later...

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2018 08:52

Its a cheap rip off of the Eric Clapton song isn't it?and at least he did actually tell his girlfriend directly :)

CrochetBelle · 01/10/2018 09:05

He's definitely no Damien Rice

switswoo81 · 01/10/2018 09:47

I like him. I dragged my 10 day post partum ass to his concert. Only a few teeny boppers wide range of ages. Dh only came cos I wanted to go and he really enjoyed it kept the crowd attention for two hours.
But then I like Adele and can’t name any songs in the top twenty (unless baby bloody shark is in there!)

LittleBookofCalm · 01/10/2018 09:48

galway girl is the Pits
and there was another one last year from Ed spit Sheeran. terible

SoyDora · 01/10/2018 09:49

I just find his music really... meh. Meh and bleh. Bland.

Roomba · 01/10/2018 09:51

Are you my DS2? He adores Ed Sheeran and a well meaning relative bought him every album for his birthday. It's not my cup of tea, his stuff, but I didn't mind it. Until I had to listen to it 24/7 for months on end...

ZaZathecat · 01/10/2018 09:54

Stop the press! Some people love Ed Sheeran and some don't!
I quite like him but tried to listen to a whole album and got bored.
For anyone doing a spreadsheet on this thread, I love Abba and am indifferent to George Ezra.
