Could my flu jab not have been given properly?

I got my flu jab done at the chemist over an hour ago. I didn’t feel the needle go into my arm and just heard a spray sort of sound then my arm was wet.

There’s no red mark, no swelling, no heat or achiness like I usually would have by now. Could the pharmacist not have done it right?

I'd ring and ask them. It does sound a bit strange.

FishesThatFly · 29/09/2018 15:48

Sounds like they sprayed the nasal flu on your arm instead!

Or when the person drew it up, they accidentally pushed the contents out of the syringe but was to scared to say.

Did they press on yr arm after?

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 15:48

It’s so weird. Honestly wouldn’t know I’d had it. Usually my arms sore very quickly.

It's a different strain to before. You may have no reaction to this one.

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 15:52

If I don’t feel any sign of having had one by tonight could I get it done again or is that dangerous,

I got mine last year - and it bloody hurt!
Came out and warned needle phobic DH it was a sore one. He said he swore he didn’t feel a thing! My arm ached afterwards and he was completely fine! It was the same pharmacist who did both.
Is it possible you got the freeze spray before the jab?

SauvignonBlanche · 29/09/2018 17:35

I didn’t feel mine at all, the needle is tiny!
My arm wasn’t sore at all when I had it done yesterday but it is a bit today.

welshweasel · 29/09/2018 17:38

I had mine done yesterday. Didn’t feel the needle and no soreness today. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 17:51

Thanks all. Still absolutely zero effects which I’ve never known before in the years I’ve been getting them. Did anyone else hear a spray sound and have a wet arm? Would it harm to have another just in case he missed or something ?

OP posts:
welshweasel · 29/09/2018 18:05

You can’t really miss! You’d know if you didn’t put the needle in.

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 18:10

It was free and they had to fill in an NHS form . Maybe he can’t claim twice so didn’t say anything?

If it was free as you are in an eligible category you should have had it with the Practice Nurse in your surgery. They are much more experienced at giving injections than Pharmacists.

EnidButton · 29/09/2018 18:18

They're highly trained professionals. There's no way they would "miss" or balls it up and not say anything. He was obviously just very good at it. The lack of reaction could be because it's different this year (as it usually is).

Yes it would be daft to get it redone. Go back to where you had it done and ask them for reassurance.

EnidButton · 29/09/2018 18:19

Pharmacists go through training every year and give hundreds of flu injections Troy

EnidButton · 29/09/2018 18:19

Training for flu injections I mean.

Foodylicious · 29/09/2018 18:22

The spray noise may have been the air in the syringe - flu vaccine comes in a pre filled syringe and you don't need to get rid or the air first.
It's not uncommon for a small amount of the vaccine to come back out, tense the way arm.
It is unusual for you to have not felt anything, but sometimes it's just not that sore.

Foodylicious · 29/09/2018 18:24

Pharmacists that gove vaccines now give a whole host of different vaccines throughout the year including travel vaccines so will be experienced.

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 18:26

Ok thanks all. Only reason I didn’t have it at my GP is they are only doing the one for over 65s at the moment and I have a DD on immuno surpressants and want to be covered when I go to stay.

OP posts:
Gingertam · 29/09/2018 18:29

I never feel the needle go in and have only had a bit of redness on one occasion. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 29/09/2018 18:37

I had mine today, no pain , no ache, nothing.

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 18:42

Wow. This is the first time in about 8 years I’ve had zero reaction. Glad others are finding the same thing.

HappeeAgain · 29/09/2018 18:45

Is it true there’s a difference in the flu jab for over 65’s?
Dm was telling me there was 🤔

Boblingoblino31 · 29/09/2018 18:47

Happee there seems to be because our GP has a sign up saying over 65 flu clinic only as that’s the only vaccinne they have in enough quantity at present. I think it’s stronger or contains extras?

Yes, this year they are having a different one.
