Double glazed bathroom window has been smashed I don’t know how

Any clues as to how the inside pane could be smashed? The windows are about five years old and my landlord will go mad so I will have to pay to get it fixed. My flat mate hasn’t been seen since Sunday but I can’t see how anyone would beable to smash it. You’d have to stand on the toilet for a start. Do I just leave the glass in as it is until I can afford to replace it?

Open window then a sudden through draught (draft?) can cause a giant slam?

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 18:57

Really? We did have those gails last week I suppose. I’m so upset can you just get that part replaced?

Is it smashed on the inside or outside?

It's called thermal shock. Is the indoor temperature a lot higher than the outside one?

Knittedfairies · 28/09/2018 18:59

We had a similar issue with a bathroom window; ours crazed like a broken windscreen. We were told it was something to do with the difference in temperature outside and inside.

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 19:03

It’s the inside. I did put the heating on for the first time this week but it’s gerally a cold flat.

Knittedfairies · 28/09/2018 19:18

Our window was ‘just’ cracked on the inside too.

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 19:18

It’s weird do you just leave it in?

Sorry no suggestions OP but I had a similar thing happen to me about 8 years ago. We'd been away at the weekend staying at my DM's and when we came home, the OUTER pane of the double glazed bathroom window was broken. The whole pane was shattered but in the middle was a single, small hole that looked suspiciously like it had been hit with a bullet. I guessed it might have been hit with an air rifle pellet. The inner pane wasn't damaged at all so I know the damage must have been done from the outside.

Windgate · 28/09/2018 19:27

Looks like the window may have slammed shut and cracked., maybe missing flat mate slammed the window? My DBIL had to smash my DM's bedroom window to gain access when she collapsed. I found a double glazing repair company on line. They removed the white trim, popped out the glazing unit, inserted new glazing unit, replaced trim - job done. It wasn't expensive.

HoleyCoMoley · 28/09/2018 19:30

It's not too expensive to replace a small pane, your l.l. may be able to claim it on their insurance if you don't want to pay.

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/09/2018 19:30

You can get it replaced for a relatively small amount of money. We had this happen in DS2's bedroom. It was pretty painless to replace.

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 28/09/2018 19:32

Possibly thermal shock.

Poor quality glazing unit which can't cope with the inside/outside temperature differential.

Standard glazing units are pretty easy to replace.

Topseyt · 28/09/2018 19:34

A double glazing repair company will measure the window and order a new double glazed unit. This will sit inside the original frame. I don't think it should be too expensive for a relatively small window but it has been a long time since I've had to do it, and that was a patio door years ago.

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 19:35

My landlord blames anything that goes wrong on us so I’d rather not involve her. It’s London so nothing is cheap when it comes to repairs. It wouldn’t have been slammed shut we rarely if ever close it. It may well be inferior quality glass. I will ring around in morning. I feel as if it’s only happened in the last day as I’ve beem off sick and have been cleaning a lot.

I had this and never figured it out.
I was away over Christmas and when I got back there was glass all over the floor, the inside pane. The external one was still intact. It was very intriguing.

specialsubject · 28/09/2018 19:57

tough on your landlord, this kind of thing happens and inner panes can indeed go. do you fear a retaliatory eviction? are all the legals in place - The rules arent different in London.

murmuration · 28/09/2018 19:58

It was pretty painless to replace. Grin

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 20:35

I don’t fear an eviction I’ve been here 15 years. She’s recently replaced the bath and tiles and implied that it was us not wiping down that caused the bath to practically fall into the shop down stairs. That kind of thing.

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 20:37

She has also said the repairs are costing more than the rent, that’s the 16 grand she gets off us every year and has done for 25 years. Ive decorated through and put up all the blinds new curtains etc

OP posts:
specialsubject · 28/09/2018 21:55

just ignore the whine and babble. Landlord repairs building and fixtures. Whatever it costs.

and how are the legals?

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2018 22:20

Dunno it’s the same contract every year everything’s up to date. She owns 50 plus flats so it’s all professional

NicLake · 28/09/2018 23:37

Definitely thermal shock, it's been cold nights and still hot (inside a sealed unit) and sunny days. The glass unit had likely broken down (had moisture in it) and this water causes super heating to occur.

I'm a glazing professional and to replace something like this it shouldn't be more than £60 for any local company.

Each oh you're one of our cat folk aren't you? Haven't seen you about in yonks, hope recovery going well.

I was about to say what a pain but you're probably fed up of window innuendo - what a nuisance.

Hope all gets fixed soon

Ariela · 29/09/2018 00:41

I just got a quote for replacing a similar sized panel at the side of our door (DPD driver chucked the corner of a box into it, sadly nobody saw it at the time so he denies it even though the hole exactly matches the box corner).
It was £185 (expensive SE area)
