For the past few years I've had the luxury of working from home but now waiting the outcome of an interview where I'll need to travel for work.

Any ideas for gentle awakenings would be very much appreciated to ease me in to my hopeful new routine.

I don't think it's possible to enjoy waking up on a workday (especially not at this time of year) but I've found it's less awful when you have something to look forward to once you've dragged yourself out of bed, like really nice coffee or a good book to read/listen to.

elQuintoConyo · 28/09/2018 08:32

Go to bed early, no electronics in the bed. I think getting enough sleep would trump coffee or a book, for me anyway.

Waking up to DH's morning wood is rather pleasant Grin

I make sure the heating comes on early enough so that the house isn’t cold. Water in the kettle the night before. Make sure the kitchen isn’t horrific and that I’ve got some decent food in for breakfast.

ScottChegg · 28/09/2018 08:34

I really love my sunrise alarm clock. It's definitely a gentle awakening.

Mundotothemax · 28/09/2018 08:35

Sunrise alarm clock ^^

I ditched mine when I had kids but once they’re teenagers I’ll be getting another one.

ATowelAndAPotato · 28/09/2018 08:36

Well I love my 4 yr old climbing in for sleepy cuddles, but a) a lot of people probably wouldn’t and b) if you don’t already have a 4 year old, they’re quite difficult to get hold of at short notice! Grin

Wilhelminawonka · 28/09/2018 08:36

My kids getting into bed with me for a cuddle and cup of tea (luckily we all wake up quite early)

AgathaMystery · 28/09/2018 08:36

Everything Nacreous said!

Seeline · 28/09/2018 08:36

I like it if I am woken by my alarm. These days the luxury of actually sleeping through until it goes off is fairly unusual. I thought the baby years were hard, but at least that was being woken for a reason. Bloody menopause just does it for fun 😡

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 28/09/2018 08:36

Another vote for sunrise alarm clock -especially in winter.

simplepimple · 28/09/2018 09:15

No joyous 4 year olds in my household ATAAP - just me and a 15 min prep time before I'm out the door - though looking at PP perhaps this is part of my imagined reluctance and I need to consider getting up earlier to allow time for a start of the day treat.

I'm off to browse sunrise alarm clocks....

I have Underworld - Born Slippy as my alarm tone Grin

It starts rather gently before building up to the lyrics. Its been my fave alarm so far!!

Jakethekid · 28/09/2018 09:46

I never close my blinds. I like to be woken up by the sun coming up. Then any extra sleep I have between then and having to get up is a bonus. I find I wake up less irritated this way than by a noisy horrible alarm

Ragh · 28/09/2018 09:53

I have a Philips wake up light. Literally changed my life! I have it come on 30m before my regular alarm and it's so much easier to get out of bed. Not cheap but would replace same day if it broke!

Etino · 28/09/2018 10:05

Teasmaid!

amusedbush · 28/09/2018 10:06

My dog (a Jack Russell) flops onto my pillow and cuddles my whole head with his arms and legs. It's pretty cute but it happens on his schedule, so it could be 7am, could be 5am...

Miladymilord · 28/09/2018 10:09

Dh brings me a coffee, then gets back into bed and we watch the news together until 7 Smile

ShotsFired · 28/09/2018 10:11

A warm bedroom, then warm bathroom and then getting dressed with warm pants from the radiator.

(Can you tell I like to be warm?)

Also nobody to disturb me or my routine will go out of the window and I'll get cranky.

simplepimple · 28/09/2018 10:24

I'm in the warm camp too shots - I've just moved back from a hot country and will need a new wardrobe - flipflops won't be suitable at all.

Oh I sympathise.....!

I would also recommend having a lamp that comes on with a timer, so you aren't fumbling in the dark.

PhilomenaButterfly · 28/09/2018 10:33

In my case it's school days as I'm a SAHM, unfortunately, DH's alarm wakes me up 35 minutes before I need to get up.

NannyR · 28/09/2018 10:35

Make sure you have enough sleep, both in quality and quantity (if family commitments allow!). Waking up when you've had a good nights sleep is much nicer as you are naturally wide awake. When you've had a bad nights sleep waking up and getting ready feels like swimming in treacle and its not great if you have to drive to work.

Iruka · 28/09/2018 11:52

I have an app that slowly increases music volume and light levels until your alarm time

FinallyHere · 28/09/2018 12:03

Two things really make a difference for me, of which the first and most important one is getting to sleep early enough the night before so that i wake up naturally. The other is to have something, however trivial, to look forward to that day. I set an alarm clock as a back stop, just incase, but if Ive had enough sleep and am looking forward to the day, waking up just happens.

If i need to get out of the house the next day, I make sure that everything i need the next morning is readily to hand, lay out clothes etc ready so That nothing slows me down in the morning. Means i can go from being asleep to walking out the door, via wash teeth, shower, dress etc in under 15mins.

On cold mornings, i fill a contigo flask with hot lemon the night before, so that its warmish to drink on my journey the next morning. Enjoy.

Oblomov18 · 28/09/2018 12:06

I actually wake up before the alarm. That's actually nicer.

Dh has an earlier alarm. I guess him getting up sturs me a bit. Sometimes I don't set the second(my) alarm.
