Is any one **NOT** in love with their instant pot?

Notsohorriblehistory · 26/09/2018 17:22

I’m considering buying and doing some research.

It seems like there cannot be a thread about IPs without hoards of mumsnetters orgasming over them.

It puts me off! I’d like to here from anyone who doesn’t explode with excitement at the mere mention of “instant pot”.

I’m totally average cook.
Just me and two children. I do the usual spaghetti Bol and casseroles but also a lot of fish (3x a week) so only end up doing a big casserole or bolognese once a fortnight

Thanks

I would be interested in this too! They are expensive so don’t want another kitchen ornament.

CakeNinja · 26/09/2018 17:27

I don’t even know what one is!

Interested in this thread?

Im planning to sell mine its been used once

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 26/09/2018 17:29

Following.

I've asked dp for either a decent knife set or an instant pot for my birthday Grin

Mundotothemax · 26/09/2018 17:29

I don’t use mine that often in summer but I do find it really handy. Definitely not in love with it though!

If you’re considering getting one, perhaps wait for potential Black Friday deals? I got mine in one of those and I’m happy with it at the reduced price. It’s not a miracle machine though. I could easily live without it, but it’s very handy.

(It does a good risotto which I would never have thought possible!)

Teaonthelawn · 26/09/2018 17:30

I like my instant pot. I would recommend buying one but wait for an offer on Amazon. I am a but suspicious of the 'orgasmic' instant pot threads - someone somewhere is being paid to sell us the instant pot.

Mundotothemax · 26/09/2018 17:32

Oh it has a soup setting that I find really useful, too. Again I’m not raving about it, it’s a really handy piece of kitchen kit but it hasn’t changed my life Smile

Notsohorriblehistory · 26/09/2018 17:32

Exactly the kind of non hysterical responses I was hoping for!

What do you use yours for (if you like it but don’t LOVE it)

OP posts:
Mundotothemax · 26/09/2018 17:33

Have I said “handy” enough times? Grin

Notsohorriblehistory · 26/09/2018 17:34

I don’t make soup.
I have a slow cooker and use that for casseroles and bolognese. I like it. What’s a IP got over a slow cooker?

Funny I was just looking into them this morning so watching with interest.

instapot · 26/09/2018 17:38

Following too! It's on my list but I'm really really not sure. I started a thread asking about just a few days ago!

Op try joining one of the many dedicated Facebook groups to get an idea of what people use it for. Though he prepared for hysteria too! Smile

Waddsup12 · 26/09/2018 17:39

Ha, ha. I think I'm one of the hysterical ones. I was very suspicious of the rave reviews & only got one as it was on offer in Costco. I do use it a lot tho. 😊. I think it depends if you cook a lot & what you cook. I like veg done in it, simple stuff like that, plus soup, etc.

LeftRightCentre · 26/09/2018 17:39

They're fab if you have a holiday home or caravan that has a gas oven because those tend to be utter pants.

Mundotothemax · 26/09/2018 17:39

Useful but not life-changing things: you can saute onions/garlic etc in it, then go on to add the rest of your ingredients, saving hassle and washing up.

Cooks rice really well.

Great for ‘set it and forget it’ soup-making, I can go upstairs/into the sitting room and not worry about getting distracted and setting the kitchen on fire.

I’ve not used it for ages but we’re getting into casserole weather so I might get it down this weekend. That will refresh my memory!

Waddsup12 · 26/09/2018 17:41

The thing it can do over a slow cooker is make a chilli from dry beans & frozen mince.

I left the fb group tho as it really was hysterical!

Notsohorriblehistory · 26/09/2018 17:42

But all those things listed xzn be done in a slow cooker? I sauté my onions in mine for example

Oh I can’t face the FB groups. The hysteria. I find it a bit embarrassing actually

Waddsup12 · 26/09/2018 17:42

I'm going to leave now tho as I'm a lover! Smile

Mindfulofmuddle · 26/09/2018 17:48

Love what it does when it's working, but the valve thingy on the lid has gone twice.

dexent · 26/09/2018 17:55

If you cook a lot of curries, do you think it would be good?

Themidnightcircus · 26/09/2018 17:58

I like mine and find it handy but the people in the facebook group are Crrrraaazzzyyy.
I do a while chicken in 30mins which is handy for me...and I love soup/ stew. Some people seem determined to use it for everything from reheating (use a microwave ffs) to cake (use an oven). Nah.

Also they were out of stock of them for literally months... about 9 or so. The main pushers/sellers on the facebook page kept saying they were on their way/ oon the boat/ delayed by Chinese new year. For months.
I found the lying off putting tbh.

User5trillion · 26/09/2018 17:59

I am meh about.mine. lots of stuff sticks to the bottom, its pretty quick but takes a while to get to pressure and release the steam. I don't love it as much as I thought I would. Mainly use it to make stock.

tbh I was swept up in the hype a bit and ordered one a couple of months ago. Now the novelty has worn off, I do like it but I don't LOVE it and I could quite happily have lived without it. It is really not as instant as it makes out! So I cooked some cajun chicken thoughts in mine tonight, which was nice, but not really any quicker than doing them in the oven! At least 10 minutes to come to pressure, 8 mins cooking at pressure, then 10 mins releasing pressure. So whilst folks say "oh you can cook chicken thighs in 8 minutes" in reality it is 28 minutes!!
I do like how it reduces the amounts of pots/pans you use. I like it for proving bread dough and I have used the yogurt making function a lot.
I also seem to use the slow cooker function more than the pressure cooker function which is a bit daft because I already had a slow cooker!!
