Does anyone else open a window on buses?

It’s too warm and you can smell the engine, but why doesn’t one of the other 40 people on here seem bothered about opening a bloody window?
It’s always me! Everyone else seems happy to sit there, uncomfortable, struggling to breathe, and no one else seems to open a window unless things get really desperate!

Why do you assume everyone feels the same as you? I’ve never noticed an engine smell or struggled to breathe.

NigelGresley · 26/09/2018 08:35

Well, I expect someone will be along soon, to say how much they enjoy warm, stuffy atmospheres and breathing diesel particulate ConfusedConfused

Well maybe I’m thinking of London buses, but opening the window certainly doesn’t stop you breathing in nasty fumes.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/09/2018 08:41

Buses in the winter are absolutely rank for this reason. When the inside of the bus is all hot and steamy but everyone just sits inside the rug breathing each other in. Even worse if it’s been raining and everyone’s jackets are all damp.

JUST OPEN A WINDOW PEOPLE

ShirleyPhallus · 26/09/2018 08:42

Fug not rug!

SockQueen · 26/09/2018 08:42

I expect some people are afraid they'll annoy other passengers if they open it - I've seen some nasty altercations over bus windows! But I do open them especially if there aren't too many people and it's not raining outside.

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 26/09/2018 08:44

I open them in the height of summer if it's scorching but I'd be pretty annoyed if someone opened a window in winter when it's freezing cold

Dychmygol · 26/09/2018 08:51

Can't open the windows on our local bus service but I'm always opening train windows.

People are dressed for the cold so having the heating full blast inside the carriage when there's barely enough room to stand (so removing coats is impossible) is just insane.

That's before I start thinking about the germ factory that is rebreathing everyone's air with minimal fresh air being circulated.

Ifailed · 26/09/2018 08:55

breathing diesel particulate there must be something wrong with the bus if exhaust fumes are inside with the windows closed. Opening them will of course allow fumes to enter.

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 26/09/2018 08:55

I use buses a lot and there’s usually some old woman that wants the window closed because the draught is annoying her/making her cold... even on the hottest day of the year when everyone was dying from heat this elderly lady said it’s cold and can I close the window

llangennith · 26/09/2018 08:57

I don't think I've ever been freezing cold on a bus or a train even in mid-winter. Open the windows!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 26/09/2018 08:58

And if you dare to open or close a window on a bus you'll get a deathstare from the OAP sat underneath said window.

Buttercupcream · 26/09/2018 08:59

I never open them apart from mid summer, it’s never that hot and the noise of the wind coming in is annoying!

The only time I've ever tried opening the window on a bus was back in the hot summer of 2011 when my dc was a tiny baby. It must've been 30+°C on that bus so I opened the window. Some old man'sn wearing a massive coat closed it. I reopened it and he shut it again. I ended up having to strip the baby and wipe them down with a baby wipe in a vain attempt to keep them cool. The baby was screaming and the old man tutted and asked if I could keep them quiet HmmHmm struggling a bit with pnd at the time, I was too upset and flustered to tell him to bugger off. I just got off the bus a few stops early.

SilverHairedCat · 26/09/2018 09:11

Agreed, and yes to the stench of diesel engine inside the bus. I've never understood it. The heat is always beyond the pale, the heating is always on in summer, people are usually in coats so what is the issue with bloody fresh air????

formerbabe · 26/09/2018 09:13

I do too op! I think it's unhygienic to have them closed ..all those germs multiplying...yuk! Give me fresh air!

Whereisthecoffee · 26/09/2018 09:22

I rage internally when the windows open and someone gets on the bus sits by the window and closes it.

ginghamstarfish · 26/09/2018 09:35

Yes, had some altercations over the years over me opening windows ... used to piss me off enormously. The pensioners who were riding around for free all day (at the expense of local council tax payers via their bus pass) seemed to think their wishes far more important than those folk who had to actually pay the enormous bus fares in order to get to work. Actually, this puzzles me every winter - people go out in coats, hats, scarves etc, dressed for outdoors, then go into shop, cafe, bus etc which is grossly overheated - yet they don't seem to notice any difference in temperature.

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 26/09/2018 09:38

I’ll always open a window. Love a breeze, can’t stand stuffy smells.
It just doesn’t occur to some people. Dh never opens the bedroom window even when the room stinks of sleep

QuestioningItAllDay · 26/09/2018 09:39

I always open the window I'm sat next to

Broken11Girl · 26/09/2018 09:44

No. I closed one today, about 8pm - it's late September, it was cold. I don't get this fresh air fanaticism at all, haven't experienced buses being stuffy, smells or exhaust fumes either.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 26/09/2018 09:45

On the train it can be quite unpleasant to be in the seat behind an open window. The person sat underneath it might get a lovely bit of ventilation, but if the train is going in excess of 60mph the people in the next seats down can get a constant face full of high velocity wind, even when it’s really hot that’s not a nice experience. I’d say it’s different with buses though, they rarely get going fast enough for that to happen, and to be smellier than trains.

bigsunflower · 26/09/2018 09:47

I sit upstairs where windows are mostly open. I have no problem in opening one though

dinkydonky · 26/09/2018 10:48

I hate open windows on buses in winter. It's fine if you're next to it, not so fine if you are a seat or two behind and getting a horrible draft (often filled with gritty bits) in your face.

If I'm wearing a coat it's because it's cold outside! And outside, a coat+walking is fine to keep me warm, buses are usually not that warm so the fact I'm sitting still means I still need a coat on.

I've also never smelt diesel on a bus. Not sure how opening the windows is going to help with that, it's not like the exhaust is in the bus Hmm

ShirleyPhallus · 26/09/2018 10:49

buses are usually not that warm

What buses do you get? The ones in London are hotter than the inside of a McDonald’s apple pie. Scientific fact.
