Does anyone else open a window on buses?

It’s too warm and you can smell the engine, but why doesn’t one of the other 40 people on here seem bothered about opening a bloody window?
It’s always me! Everyone else seems happy to sit there, uncomfortable, struggling to breathe, and no one else seems to open a window unless things get really desperate!

I used to get an early bus to get to work for 7am it generslly wasent very full and the buses did get quite chilly in the winter months with windows open , if its summer though or the bus is very packed than open away!

Harrykanesrightsock · 26/09/2018 11:06

I would never shut a window but I hate a breeze on me. I have sensory issues And open car and bus windows stress me out enormously

Dychmygol · 26/09/2018 11:32

but if the train is going in excess of 60mph our local trains barely do more than 45mph...and that's only if there's a decent stretch between stations only one I can think of which is probably why they still have windows that open.

They also don't have air conditioning so there's no air filtration system in place. There's heat from the floor heaters or air from the windows. Everything else is being provided by the people breathing so if the windows are shut it's grim!

NigelGresley · 26/09/2018 17:01

opening the window certainly doesn’t stop you breathing in nasty fumes.

Maybe not, but it would make them much less concentrated.

Ewwww. It’s horrible.

People seem to hate fresh air.

I inspect Nurseries as part of my job and the amount of windows kept closed all year round is astounding.
Stuffy and smelly. Bit pleasant.

Fresh air is a requirement.

We aren’t in the arctic!!!

Itchytights · 26/09/2018 17:05

Flaming auto correct- very unpleasant !!

NigelGresley · 26/09/2018 17:08

I've also never smelt diesel on a bus. Not sure how opening the windows is going to help with that, it's not like the exhaust is in the bus

Some of our buses are quite old and seem very shoddily put together. The inside of the bus is obviously not completely sealed from the engine, and some of the exhaust escapes into the bus. It might also be through the heaters, that draw air in from around the engine or passes through it to be heated. I swear if someone used one of those emissions monitors half the buses in my are would be condemned!
Opening the windows is definitely better for health!

Also, what it is with bus drivers wearing short sleeved shirts? Get a blasted jumper on!

I’m with you op. They’re hot and they stink. The fug of food, unwashed hair, armpits, feet and wet dog coats deserves to be released.

NigelGresley · 26/09/2018 17:15

That video doesn’t look like it’s in the UK! Wondered what would have happened in the UK 😂

Somebody probably already did but there's always a huffy window slammer, even when it's 30C on board.

ALongHardWinter · 26/09/2018 17:28

I often open a window as I invariably find that buses smell stuffy,or downright unpleasant. I often seem to get someone reeking of last nights beer sat next to me,or someone who's just eaten garlic for lunch. Or worse still,in the summer,BO. What annoys me is that the second the outdoor temperature drops below 25 degrees Celsius, the window slammers spring into action. Despite the fact that they're usually warmly dressed, they cannot bear the slightest waft of air on their skin. And they never just close the window. It has to slammed shut with as much force as possible, which always makes me jump (I suffer from fibromyalgia and one of the side effects is jumpiness at sudden loud noises). And what makes me even more annoyed, are the ones who don't just slam the window shut next to them, they go round the whole bus slamming every poxy window shut. A few times I have said to someone who's tried to shut the one next to me 'Excuse me,but I'd rather it was left open'. To which I invariably get a death stare.
A few years ago, my DD got into a battle about the window next to her. She'd opened it and the man behind her stood up and closed it. She opened it again and he closed it again. After this had happened 5 times,my DD said 'You can keep closing it as much as you like but I wll only open it again!'. Thankfully he gave up after that. And in my DD's defence,it was the middle of summer, and definitely not cold.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 26/09/2018 17:33

I'm a window opener.

I once got threatened by an old lady complete with bony finger jabbing at my face Shock

Vinorosso74 · 26/09/2018 17:35

If it's warm then yes. If it's cold then no. Trouble is people open the window by them but everyone behind are the ones who get the cold wind on them.
If you're too warm in winter then remove hat/scarf/undo coat etc

golddustwomen · 26/09/2018 17:35

I do too op! Buses are stuffy as hell, especially after work.

Piewacket · 26/09/2018 18:24

@BluthsFrozenBananas Yes to that. The constant freezing draught whistling across the top of my head gives me a cracking headache by the end of a train journey. in winter I'll sit there in a woolly hat for protection, but it's difficult to get away with a woolly hat in this weather, particularly when the heating is on in the train ans you're sitting there in a light top.

Kezzie200 · 26/09/2018 18:30

I always do. I always get stared at. Sometimes i get asked to close it, so ask, so ask others around me. Usually i get away with it.

I think we are a rare breed

Rockbird · 26/09/2018 18:36

I have sensory issues and can't bear a lack of air. Being on a bus or train with no air makes me panic and I can't breathe. This is mostly the reason why I no longer travel public transport. I don't care how cold it is, I need a breeze.

OliviaStabler · 26/09/2018 18:46

People only open the window above them hence they don't have to live with the rush of air that those behind do. Pisses me off. Not all buses travel slowly.

Claricestarling1 · 26/09/2018 18:53

I do too OP!! I don’t get how people can sit there for 30 plus minutes with no air flow and condensation dripping down the windows 🤢 makes me want to hyperventilate thinking of all the germs I must be breathing in!!

AntiHop · 26/09/2018 18:59

I'm with you op. Can't stand a stuffy bus.

ForalltheSaints · 26/09/2018 19:37

Someone usually beats me to it.

The different temperatures people like, and the fact that some people are smelly are two of the hidden obstacles to getting people out of cars.
