Has anyone had a Cortisone injection for chronic pain.

I have bursitis in my hip. It’s really causing me discomfort.
The painkillers my GP gave me really made my digestive system feel bad so I’ve stopped the naproxen tablets.
The Dr said the alternative is an injection in my hip.
That scares me. Can anyone tell me if it helped them with pain and was it a grim process having it done 😩

I've had them into my spine for arthritis and they were really painful but effective. You can't have too many though for a reason that escapes me

ihatethecold · 26/09/2018 06:35

I do read that you can only have 3 a year Milkcoma

If they offer you a sedative though, you want it. Trust me

Not necessarily. I've only had sedation when they've also done RFA to my spine. For only steroid joint injections I've had local anaesthetic (apart from my knee and that was not pleasant!) The only steroid injection that hurt, even with local, was in my foot. Shoulder I've had 3 and after the split second sting of the local it hasn't hurt at all so I think everyone's experience is different.

Is it usually given at a GP surgery or at hospital?

My mum had one of these in her hand for arthritis and she found it very helpful, she had been unable to bend her hand into a fist before hand due to swelling and pain and afterwards (not straight away but once it started working) she did get a lot of mobility back. She said she would definitely have another, even though it did hurt when they did it.

I've had them in the facet joints in my spine. I got some relief from them but not a total transformation. Mine were done in theatre but just as a day patient under local. You can be sedated by I needed to drive home so didn't get the sedation, and it was fine without.

I have injections in my hip for arthritis - I find they help massively and have been able to start lifting weights to strengthen my hip.

alwaysthepessimist · 26/09/2018 10:39

My mum has had the injections for a hip bursitis and each time it has worked amazingly, hers is now healed but what did it wasn't the injections it was actually being diagnosed with lung cancer and her having to have 2 major ops back to back then chemo - it meant she couldn't do anything really so had to rest - that 6 months of total rest fixed it - bit drastic I know! Have you thought about acupuncture - I have a hip issue caused by spd 6 years ago and I have acupuncture - western though not chinese and it's amazing for easing the symptoms so I can get some sleep at night time

maras2 · 26/09/2018 10:53

Whilst waiting for a shoulder replacement, I had an injection into the joint. It was accurately done using ultra sound and within seconds I was pain free.
Unfortunately it only lasted for 3 months but was so worth it.

ihatethecold · 26/09/2018 13:20

Oh my goodness pessimist. Your mum, I hope she is now better.
My eldest kids dad has lung and brain cancer and it’s brutal.

Also why not Chinese acupuncture?

I had it in my sacriollic joint but didn’t find it made a difference. Wasn’t bad though.

Boiledeggandtoast · 26/09/2018 13:37

I had one for a frozen shoulder. It took a couple of days to work but then it was amazing at reducing the pain and with physiotherapy I got full movement back.

ihatethecold · 26/09/2018 14:58

Has anyone tried hyaluronic acid supplements for joint pain?
I’ve been reading up on it and it makes sense that it would help lubricate my joints.

BrownPaperTeddy · 26/09/2018 16:36

@ihatethecold

I've had a hyaluronic injection into my knee but I've not found it very helpful.

ihatethecold · 26/09/2018 16:52

ok, thanks BrownPaperTeddy.

Ive just got back from the Dr's...The Gp gave me prescription strength codeine and said its too soon to think about a cortisone injection.

I'm sure codeine bungs people up. just what I need after having inflamed guts.

she said if I needed an injection they would give it a go!
Sad

I’ve had it done twice although not for bursitis. The first time I was awake, it hurt and I didn’t notice much improvement in my pain. Second time was under GA and it did help with the pain for a while but wore off over time.

mycarcrashlife · 26/09/2018 21:03

Take senna with the cocodomal and lactu lose if you can stomach it.

HistoriaTrixie · 26/09/2018 21:24

I've just recently had a cortisone injection for hip bursitis and it was like a miracle cure - the pain was entirely gone before I got home! They froze the injection site with freezy spray so I didn't even feel the needle. I hope you get a chance to have it.

Mossend · 26/09/2018 21:26

I've had 2 for tennis elbow. They def worked until I had my operation

ihatethecold · 26/09/2018 21:46

Yeah not looking forward to the side effects of the codeine. 😩

Buggerbrexit · 26/09/2018 22:50

I have no problems with cocodomol or other opiates so you might be lucky. Only time I ever have a problem is post surgery.

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 26/09/2018 22:52

I have had the hip injection for bursitis.. It wasn't the most pleasant experience but worked an absolute treat. I have been pain free since.

Wagonwheelsandjammydodgers · 26/09/2018 22:53

Yes and didn't do anything other than make my hip more painful. The only thing that fixed my bursitis was a physio massaging the illiotibial band repeatedly and me doing it at home with a rolling pin. No amount of stretches helped.
