How many extra curriculars do your DC do and how much does it cost?

I know it's all relative but I have four DC and they all do lots of extra curriculars. It means our evenings are spent ferrying kids around. It also costs a fortune, probably the best part of £700 per month. This is obviously a sizeable sum but it also means that we can't afford to go out for meals/big days out etc. Each child only does a couple of things but those all add up and when I think about trying to cut back I feel guilty that I've given one child the opportunity and not the others. I just wondered what others did and what do you do when you are not running them around? Hopefully this will give me a bit of perspective.
My DC do the following:
Dc1 (13): Lots of dance (this is the most expensive as is high level and wants to be pro)/hockey
Dc2(10) : piano/athletics/netball/theatre
Dc3 (8): tutor (top 2 started at this age for a few years and really helped them)/hockey/rugby/guitar/cubs
Dc4 (5): gymnastics/dance/swimming/rugby

A lot! But all one sport but involves a LOT of time in the car. One plays at national level so its a lot of commitment.

Petrol and food on the go as I often leave straight from work.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 25/09/2018 19:19

My dd's are only 3 and 5 and do 1 dance class a week which is £3 each.

The school are about to do a cookery course which is £1 a week.

wendz86 · 25/09/2018 19:21

Mine averages about £90 a month . Dd1 does swimming , Tap , ballet and modern . Dd2 does ballet .

DS (8):Tennis, football, rugby, swimming, piano £40 p/w
DD (5): Dance & tennis £17 p/w

Blondie1993 · 25/09/2018 19:30

DS (6) goes to swimming lessons once a week. Monthly direct debit of £15 roughly. He also goes to a football club after school at the moment which is free. It ends in about 3 weeks so if he has really enjoyed it i’ll probably look for another one for him. I think they are around £30 per month in this area.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/09/2018 19:36

Swimming: £50 squad fees, plus competition fees (about £5 a race, can be 8 races over a weekend). Travel and accommodation for competitions as we can enter competitions a 3 hour drive away and warm up starts at 8am. About £70 a month.
Kit- £250 for racing trunks (one pair), £85 for lower level competition trunks, £25 for training trunks (a few pairs).
Gym fees: £15 a month- stamina development.

Jenniferturkington · 25/09/2018 19:41

3dc.
Ds(11) Stagecoach- £350 term & swimming £150 a term.
Dd1(9) Cricket (£100 season) basketball (£5 session weekly) swimming (£150 term)
Dd2(5) swimming (£75 term) animal club (£6 session weekly)

Hopefully ds is about to get stage 7 swimming and then he can quit!

formerbabe · 25/09/2018 19:45

They only do one each... football and brownies... costs me £8 a week for both! Bargain!

My DC are exhausted after school so I don't want them doing things every night of the week!

Hellohah · 25/09/2018 19:46

DS13 does Cadets which is 50p a week, he had to pay £10 for his uniform and does camps 2 weekends a year at £20 each and one 8 day camp in the summer holidays which was £60.
And football, £10/month.
He also goes to the gym/swimming with his friends 2/3 times a week and that's £10/month.

YeOldeTrout · 25/09/2018 19:46

£700/month? Bloody Hell. I have 4 kids & was topping £50/wk at one point (mostly DD, including fortnightly horse riding + high travel cost for DS1). But totally out of OP's league.

Nowadays... £5, guitar lesson for youngest. That's it!

Pissedoffdotcom · 25/09/2018 19:48

DD(6) does Rainbows at £25 a term, piano lessons at £70 a term, dance at £12 a month & a multiskills club which is free. She was doing ju jitsu on top which was the most expensive but they upped the age limit.

We wouldn't be able to afford more tbh

Taffeta · 25/09/2018 19:52

Football for DS - about £250/year
But he earns about £40 a weekend coaching and reffing

DD plays two instruments - fees about £90 a term (term as in two half terms) per instrument
Also plays in three bands - fees about £100 a term
Guides £30 a term
Netball £4 a session

dArtagnansCrumpet · 25/09/2018 19:53

4 year old, dancing twice a week £25 a month, then extras for rehearsals, costumes etc. Swimming once a week for about £22 monthly. I'll probably sign her up for rainbows when she's 5 but she's exhausted as it is so shall see!

Chrisinthemorning · 25/09/2018 19:56

One DS (6).
Dance club through school £75 per term
Swimming lesson £32 per month
Beavers £30 per term
STEM club through school free
Money isn’t an issue but time is. I like him to have free time to play as he’s only 6. I don’t want to commit to anything regular at weekends although happy to do the odd thing through Beavers.

xyzandabc · 25/09/2018 20:00

I know where you're coming from. I have 3.

Dc1 (11): guides, cadets, fencing, swimming, piano, flute
Dc2 (9): dancing, Badgers, tutoring, swimming X2, piano, guitar
Dc3 (6): beavers, football, drums

All music takes place in school time, we wouldn't have time if I had to take them after school. Tutoring is only for a year for the 11+, so temporary. I've just totted it up roughly. I reckon it's about £450 a month for 10 months a year (as most are term time only). Though that doesn't count any costs for dance shows (very pricy as you know) or camps or music exams or days out with organisations which also adds up.

We have 1evening a week with no activities. Every other day has at least 1 if not 2 or 3 things I need to take them to or pick up from. I coordinate going to the gym while they are at an activity which works well 2 evenings. Also DH works from home so I don't have to drag the 6 yr old out to drop off or pickup older siblings which helps too

Stillwishihadabs · 25/09/2018 20:00

D's (14) does football £100 per term and has a gym membership £22 per month
Dd does riding £40 ow so £250 a month total. £700 seems mad

HollySwift · 25/09/2018 20:05

£700?! Shock We spend £200 on a family gym membership, which includes kids classes and swimming lessons for 1 DC. (Eldest can swim and youngest is a bit young for lessons yet).
DS1 goes to a tutor once a week - £33 a time. Will probably stop this after Christmas as he’s nearly caught up. Guitar lessons at school cost £60 a term, so £15 a month.
All three attend a free church group once a week.
DD wants to do gym but there’s no local provision at the moment so she’ll have to wait. Also wants horse riding but as she’s young we’re holding off a bit as know it’ll be horrendously expensive Grin

Dontbestupidagain · 25/09/2018 20:07

See now I don't feel quite so bad as actually we're all just doing what we can. It all just feels like such a rat race sometimes

ditherdorothy · 25/09/2018 20:09

One DS (5). Just started school and I feel that's enough for now (as does he!) so he does nothing extra - nil cost obviously!

ilovewine · 25/09/2018 20:10

OP can I ask about the tutor please? My DS is 10 and I have been toying with getting a tutor for him for a while (issues with spelling etc) and I think it might focus him. What did you get the tutor for, how often and do you think it makes a huge difference?
Thanks.

PhilODox · 25/09/2018 20:11

Some activities cost far more than others- DD's junior conservatoire is £4,500 a year....her football club is free thank goodness.

fedup2017 · 25/09/2018 20:12

Ds14. Tennis X3/wk. Football. Instrumental lessons. Dread to think how much money (about £50/week ISH during term time but more for music/exams/extra lessons)
Ds11. Park run and dodgeball club (free!).
Ds9.Cathedral choir and viola group lessons (free currently!) And tennis (£5/week) drama lessons (group subsidised about £5/week )
Ds4 ballet tap and modern (£10 a week ISH) tennis (2.50/week).

We live in the middle on nowhere and spend a lot of time running people backwards and forwards.... We have something on most afternoons after school and some mornings before school..... They still seem to spend a lot of the time watching TV and playing PlayStation though!

Witchend · 25/09/2018 20:12

I thought I spent too much:
Dd1: drama, tap; cost: £130 a term
DD2: Trumpet, orchestra, musical theatre, tap, gym; cost: £512 a term

Ds: Musical Theatre, drama, drums; cost: £400 a term

DinosApple · 25/09/2018 20:13

We worked it out today and it was £560 for this term, that's 2x brownies, art club & swimming and 1x violin and school trip.

Next term it'll be less as one can now swim (hurrah).

LadyFlangeWidget · 25/09/2018 20:14

Ds 1 does football twice a week..costs 100 euro per year all in
Ds 2 does footy also. 160 euro per year. They both do guitar at school 30 euro zper month each. So that's 80 euro a month....
