How many extra curriculars do your DC do and how much does it cost?

I know it's all relative but I have four DC and they all do lots of extra curriculars. It means our evenings are spent ferrying kids around. It also costs a fortune, probably the best part of £700 per month. This is obviously a sizeable sum but it also means that we can't afford to go out for meals/big days out etc. Each child only does a couple of things but those all add up and when I think about trying to cut back I feel guilty that I've given one child the opportunity and not the others. I just wondered what others did and what do you do when you are not running them around? Hopefully this will give me a bit of perspective.
My DC do the following:
Dc1 (13): Lots of dance (this is the most expensive as is high level and wants to be pro)/hockey
Dc2(10) : piano/athletics/netball/theatre
Dc3 (8): tutor (top 2 started at this age for a few years and really helped them)/hockey/rugby/guitar/cubs
Dc4 (5): gymnastics/dance/swimming/rugby

We were doing...

DS1 football - £25 a month, guitar £69 a month and golf £20 a week, swimming £145 a term

DS2 - Tennis £8 a week, football £25 a month, piano £140 a term, swimming £145 a term

DD1 - gymnastics £100 a term, swimming £145 a term

It got a bit out of control and we've now cut right down to

DS1 - football

DS2 - football and piano

DD stopped gym as she didn't like it and has just started school.

notsurewhatshappening · 26/09/2018 17:02

Both have swimming lessons. DS does rugby and DD is on the waiting list for brownies.
Both hate going out after school and go to a childminder 3 or 4 evenings out of 5 depending on my timetable (I'm a teacher). We are all happy with the amount they don't do!

BitchQueen90 · 26/09/2018 17:29

@sickmumma those are some expensive swimming lessons! Shock

I've just got one 5 year old DC. He does swimming lessons (non negotiatiable) at £7.50 a week and a fun foreign languages club at £5 a week. Both term time only.

DS isn't into sports. He did gymnastics for while but didn't like it so we stopped. I've got him on the waiting list for beavers for when he turns 6.

Dds are 13 and 14 and both do a teenage sewing class. It’s £140 a term each (10 weeks), fabric/materials etc are extra, probably another £50-80 on top depending on what they’re making.
They don’t swim any more other than at our gym when we go as a family and we have membership.
They also both do one other after school club which are both free.

Ds (6) has swimming lessons (don’t know how much this costs, it is lumped on top of our gym membership) and does kick boxing one evening a week, it’s £6 a session. He was doing football on a Sunday too but was getting increasingly tired and grouchy about being woken up early on a Sunday morning so we dropped that.

On the one hand I do get a bit crabby about spending so much time ferrying them around, on the other hand I’m glad they have hobbies and interests outside of school.

My DS14 does Musical Theatre, drama, singing lessons and is a gym member. My DD also goes to musical theatre, violin, piano and singing lessons.

I've worked it out at around £460 a month for both.

They both love what they do and DS wants a career in his extra curricular activities so I think it's worth it. My DD is heading the same way as her brother.

theboxofdelights · 26/09/2018 18:18

Swimming, music, tennis = more than £60 a week which is a lot. Swimming and music have been DD's thing for a very long time, the others come and go.

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/09/2018 18:44

A load of sports and one musical instrument each. They're both under 10.

It costs a small fortune but I'm not in the UK so the cost won't mean anything to you. The ferrying is also arduous, such that I have to do tit for tat with friends, as often their activity times double up.

DD is having to drop one thing next term as we can't fit everything in. Every time another activity pops up in the school newsletter, DH wants to know if they might like it. At this point, it doesn't matter if they do, there's no more capacity!

It feels slightly extreme to me, but all their friends seems to be in the same boat. It wasn't like this in my day.

£180 a month in total. Horse riding, drama and rugby.

chattingtoaspanishgirl · 26/09/2018 20:16

Baby DS of 10 months, swimming - £110 every 6 weeks.

DD(5) Pony club, riding, general of the sport - About £500 a month

Millie2013 · 26/09/2018 20:46

DD (year 1) does 3x weekly after school sports clubs and loves them. They’re £4-£5 each for approx an hour
She also does ballet on a Saturday, not sure of cost as MIL pays, but it’s not cheap. They follow the RAD syllabus and she’s about to take her first exam, so there’ll be exam fees and uniform

HellenaHandbasket · 26/09/2018 20:56

#1: Riding weekly @ £100 p/m approx plus any extras in holidays, shows etc.
Gymnastics: £30 p/m
Beavers: £10 p/m
She did swim weekly at £30 p/m but since starting school is too tired and busy and as she can swim well this is what was cut.
#2: Riding weekly at £60 p/m (home ed rate)
Skateboarding; £40 p/m
Lit/numeracy: £30 p/m
Various groups: £20 p/m
Will start beavers soon.

HellenaHandbasket · 26/09/2018 20:57

Oh yes, and #1 has just started a music class at approx £30 p/m.

They also sail, but that is sporadic and often free.

Racecardriver · 26/09/2018 21:00

Only tenis (through school) at the moment. It's 30 pounds a term.

trumpetoftheswan · 26/09/2018 21:06

Less than I paid for childcare when they were younger, which is a small mercy!

1unhappymum · 26/09/2018 21:13

My child does Tutor, swimming, Football, althletics, outdoor adventure, piano, lego club and philosophy. Then on top weekly driving range.
We pay for swimming, piano, football, golf, tutor and lego club. The others the school run for free. Costs are about £260 per month excluding kit and equipment.

MismatchedStripySocks · 26/09/2018 21:29

DS does rugby. It’s £100 subs per year up front. Then he needs boots etc and the cost of the yearly tour. All of which adds up to about £400. Fairly cheap and he loves it.

ilovewine · 26/09/2018 22:12

Thanks HollySwift, sounds like your wee one is really benefiting from it. I'm off to try and find one now Smile
