Help! Last minute holiday - which coastal town would you go in Cyprus?

Help! We've been trying to book a week long break for ages but we've had a lot on and so it's going to be very last minute! As in....later this week Blush Apologies for lack of paragraphs but it won't let me press enter.... Have narrowed down holiday specs to 1. Must be warm 2. Have some culture/things to do but not a city. 3. Be on the coast so we can visit beach and wander along the front in the evenings. 4. In Europe somewhere. We have narrowed down to Cyprus as I think it will still be fairly hot there but I have no idea whereabouts would fit the above criteria. We don't really want a mass tourist resort. Anyone been?! Thank you!

And also - have people been at this time of year and are things still open?

Totally agree about staying near Polis or Latsi. Great fish restaurants. Boat trips out to Blue Lagoon. Treks across the Akamai. Dips in Pomos Bay. Plus the Gorge near the Sea Caves.

First rains are usually mid October. Very dramatic.

Enjoy! Smile

You'll need a cardi if eating out in the evening by the coast.

Most places don't start closing till just after our half term holiday(end of October).

Treks through the Troodos are a must too. You can do mountain bike hires. Interesting monasteries.

If you can get a small 4 wheel drive (Suzuki jeep type thing) then you can go off road round many places which are usually too hot in the summer months.

Lived in Cyprus for three years. I was going to say Latchi too. If you want somewhere a bit more lively try Paphos.

OneTooManyMornings · 24/09/2018 20:33

Girne in North Cyprus is one of my favourite places in the world. Though admittedly it's been 14 years since I last went, so I can't really vouch for it anymore or give any up to date advice on it.

counterpoint · 24/09/2018 22:11

There's no such place as "North Cyprus" or "Girne". The north part of Cyprus is currently illegally occupied by 40,000 Turkish troops and it is morally repugnant to support Turkey's illegal invasion forces whilst some 20,000 native Cypriots are not allowed to move back to their homes due to Turkey's ethnic cleansing and its UN condemned colonisation policy.

We went to Larnaca last October half term - was lovely and warm, plenty of restaurants etc.

NameChangeCuddleBums · 24/09/2018 22:39

I second Girne/Kyrenia; Absolutely beautiful, great eating out, lovely beaches.

Dowser · 24/09/2018 22:48

Pathos was rather niceloved the mosaicswe went sept 19 two years ago gawd it was hot..34

Dowser · 24/09/2018 22:49

Paphos

Babdoc · 24/09/2018 22:53

I’d vote for Paphos too. The Roman mosaics are wonderful.

QOD · 24/09/2018 22:55

Paphos!

counterpoint · 24/09/2018 22:56

For those getting encouraged to visit the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus; from HM.GOV travel advice: "The Republic of Cyprus is a full member of the EU, but the country remains divided by the Green Line which separates the so-called ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ from the rest of the island. The ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ is not recognised by the British government." Normal EU rules do not apply, which includes health services, food hygiene standards etc

Pinkandproud · 24/09/2018 22:57

Good to hear so many people like Paphos! I was looking at there. Are there beaches?

How well connected is it by public transport? Could you take buses to nearby towns?

I would also recommend looking at Girne/ Kyrenia - it's beautiful and not too commercialised (much less so than Paphos). It's perfectly safe and hygienic. It's also very cheap at the moment due to the weak Turkish Lira. Check it out for yourself rather than listening to counterpoint's propaganda - this is about holidays not politics and it's a great place to go on holiday.

Pinkandproud · 24/09/2018 23:54

I actually went to Kyrenia years ago, it was lovely Smile

Why are you so determined to encourage people to visit a politically sensitive part of Cyprus? Probably because Turkey has a vested interest in internet promotion of its occupation as something normal.

There are many wonderful places to visit in Cyprus that are not under Turkish occupation. If you want Turkish lira, go to Turkey. This OP was asking about Cyprus and since someone jumped in with Turkish propaganda terminology, it was sensible to clarify the situation with the facts.

mozzrules · 25/09/2018 00:02

The OP asked for recommendations of places to go in Cyprus which fit her criteria - Girne fits. I've been there many times and loved it and clearly I'm not the only one. It's still lovely, Pink - it probably hasn't changed that much either! Smile

Pantah630 · 25/09/2018 00:05

What Counterpoint said.....I have family displaced from Morphou, please don't encourage people to head into the occupied area, no matter how lovely/cheap it is Sad

Pinkandproud · 25/09/2018 00:13

Thank you for the political input...... but I am not planning to visit the Turkish area in any case since I have already been there some years ago.

OP posts:
mozzrules · 25/09/2018 00:13

People were displaced from both sides, obviously, but that's not really the point. Anyway I hope you find somewhere lovely for your holiday, OP. It's a perfect time of the year to visit - not too hot but still plenty of sunshine.

Proseccoagain · 25/09/2018 07:06

Pissouri is lovely, about halfway between Limassol and Paphos, if you want something quiet. It's near Aphrodite's Rock.
