Need new towels but like a rough rub down; how can I make new towels hard and craggy?

All my towels are looking manky. But I love them because they're old and rough. Can't be doing with a namby pamby soft towel. So, if I buy new ones, how long will it be before they're rough as a hessian sack? And what can I do to hasten the process?

LIne dry them on a cold day.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/09/2018 19:13

Hard water is your friend.

TheQueef · 23/09/2018 19:13

Dry them on radiators and don't turn as they dry.

DS used to call these scratch and sniff towels.

IAmcuriousyellow · 23/09/2018 19:14

Air dry them to a crisp, no fabric conditioner, and yes to hard water! I love them scritchy too

SunnySomer · 23/09/2018 19:14

No softener, line dry outside, don’t iron

Luglio · 23/09/2018 19:14

Wash them in hard water, line dry.

Lift them off the line like folded cardboard.

I'm with you, OP. Can't abide a slimy, fluffy, towel.

yawning801 · 23/09/2018 19:15

Boil them to death. Normally works for me.

Torridon19 · 23/09/2018 19:17

Use them to dry off the dog.....they'll soon be scratchy .....

TheQueef · 23/09/2018 19:21

Where do you all live with no wind?
My line is in the wind so everything flaps to a perfect crispness.
Also who the fuck irons towels? Stop that.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 23/09/2018 19:23

Good suggestions!! Am almost looking forward to 'ruining' them now. It'll be an experiment. I'll do different things with different towels.

So glad I’m not the only one who loves a hard crispy towel, my family and friends think I’m crazy for not preferring a soft tumble dried towel!

onestitchaway · 23/09/2018 19:33

Ours are like that! A combination of hard water and no tumble drier. Hated it a first. Just recently bought new towels and they’re all soft and fluffy. Just no. Much prefer hard now!

Melfish · 23/09/2018 19:40

No tumble drier or fabric conditioner. I wash mine at 60 with bio powder and line dry- nice and scratchy! IKEA do some towels www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/towels-bathmats/hären-bath-sheet-medium-grey-art-90337093/ which go scratchy under that method within a couple of washes.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 23/09/2018 19:49

Melfish - that's fab as there is an Ikea literally across the road from me. I'm there tomorrow.

Hang them still dripping wet on the line. They'll be so hard you will need to karate chop them to fold them

Antiquepeek · 23/09/2018 19:57

Love a crispy towel! Yay!

Coldhandscoldheart · 23/09/2018 20:24

I bung a bit of washing soda in with them with the powder. Helps shift the conditioner stuff they’re sold with.

CakeNinja · 23/09/2018 20:49

Arghhh dp also loves a crunchy towel Shock when he lived at home with his mum, watching him almost exfoliate his back with them (like a back floss Grin ) nearly made me leave him!!
Although it’s tough shit for him as I do the majority of the washing so he gets fluffy tumble dried towels.

IchFliegeNach · 23/09/2018 21:03

Get my DH to wash them for you.

Girlsnightin · 23/09/2018 21:13

Give them to me. I've perfected the technique.

Girlsnightin · 23/09/2018 21:13

Ironing towels. Have heard it all now.

frippit · 23/09/2018 21:15

Scratchy towels are the best for a nice exfoliation and dry after a shower. Soft towels make no sense they don't even dry you well Hmm. Wash them on a hot wash with no softener and dry them on a line or radiator mine could be snapped in half they are that hard Grin

sproutsandparsnips · 23/09/2018 21:38

Ooh I love a hard, scratchy towel. It must be able to stand up on its own! Some towels are more disposed to it than others. I find the cheaper it is, the less likely to be satisfactorily scratchy. I wash at high temperature, line dry where possible, but if not, on an airer, but NEVER in the tumble dryer. Never iron, and absolutely never use fabric conditioner.
