Do you see books as a treat?

I love reading, I really do. I have a library card but the library stock is crap- Maeve Binchy on one side and Lee Childs on the other. DC are getting a bit older and aren't impressed with the selection for their age either.

I buy about 3 books a month (but I rarely buy clothes, take away coffees etc). But taking the children to Waterstones etc can really add up.

Can you order in to your library?

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 23/09/2018 18:24

Get the cheaper one penny books on amazon or hunt around in charity shops. I’ve had some fab books from charity!

NoProbLlama78 · 23/09/2018 18:26

No they're a necessity. Can you get a kindle app on your phone for yourself? Lots are 99p and Amazon for kids books if there isn't a library or charity shop nearby

You can order in, but I really love browsing and flicking through.

Charity shops! I've donated loads of books to charity shops over the years, I should have thought of that.

I've just never seen a book as a treat, more of an essential Blush

Has your area signed up with Libby? You can get ebooks and audiobooks if your library local authority has then. It’s amazing.

Books aren’t a treat in my house as long as I have the money to spare. But they’re always from the charity shop or the library. DS has a lovely collection, all from the charity shop.

Racecardriver · 23/09/2018 18:28

Absolutely. I buy from charity shops though. They often have a good range of classics that no one ever touches. I don't even bother with a library card. The children's section in our library is nice but the adults section is mostly filled with coffee table books and softcore porn (no DH Lawrence sadly).

fuzzywuzzy · 23/09/2018 18:31

I love books, they are treat to me and my dc. I buy from the book people and also second hand from amazon and eBay.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/09/2018 18:31

Can you go to a bigger library?

vampirethriller · 23/09/2018 18:32

I buy on average 2 books a week from charity shops, keep the ones I really like and give the rest back. I never buy them new, I like looking for them.

TurquoiseCat · 23/09/2018 18:32

You could try car boot sales as well as chatty shops if there's any in your area. I've picked up loads of books from car boots!

EsmeeMerlin · 23/09/2018 18:32

I indulge my children with books because I love to see children read but never buy from places like Waterstones. It’s too expensive, I buy from charity stores and car boot sales etc. Just today I went to a baby and child sale in our local community hall and bought two That’s not my dragon and penguin for 50p each. My two boys love them. We have also got all the where’s wally books which got in a box set from the charity store for £1. They are like £6.99 each on Waterstones!

crosser62 · 23/09/2018 18:32

Reading a book is a treat in terms of time for me.
Pre kids I'd demolish 3 books a week, I've read very few since, I just don't have the time, concentration and fall asleep on line one.
Started reading again recently, I've got Sarah Milligan's being champion and it's good.
Last week I read Eleanor Olifant which was ok.
I've stolen my older sons library card, I go weekly with my little son so feel very indulgent and ruined just browsing the shelves.
I'm picky though, won't waste my time on shite books.

LadyDuplo · 23/09/2018 18:39

Amazon
Supermarkets do cheap books

HerondaleDucks · 23/09/2018 18:41

I buy at least 4 or 5 books a month. They are my bread and butter.

BennettonColours · 23/09/2018 18:43

Yes, I'm picky too- I can't handle anything too difficult atm but I cannot abide anything badly written!

I must investigate the local charities and maybe a few more libraries. I don't have an e-reader or anything but might invest.

They shouldn’t be a treat, but they are too expensive to be a normal everyday purchase!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/09/2018 18:46

Agree that they’re a normal part of my expenditure but I’d find it hard to justify paying full price when you can get so many ebooks from the library, order in books, buy the cheap bo9s on Amazon and browse charity shops and secondhand book shops.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 23/09/2018 18:49

I always have to have a book on the go so they are a bit of a necessity for me. I have young kids and don't go out socially, so books are my escape and my treat to myself. I do try and buy them cheaply from charity shops or Ebay, but if its something new out I've been looking forward go reading I will buy it new but look for buy one get one half price. Asda always has deals on the books.

HubrisComicGhoul · 23/09/2018 18:52

There is a charity shop at the end of our road that sells children's books for 10p each, so I can afford for them to be an everyday purchase
(at least for the children).

FrankieStein · 23/09/2018 18:53

Definitely more necessity than treat. I have next to no space so kindle is a lifesaver. As is kindle unlimited. I'm always reading and can easily do a book a day (I read really fast, think a standard novel in a couple of hours) and I can't afford paper print prices. So £8 a month saves me hundreds.

DD (7) has already read all the Roald Dahl books, (thanks to thebookpeople and their sales) and I regularly get her books from charity shops. Luckily she's like me and will re read favourites though.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2018 18:53

I see the time to sit and read a book to be a treat.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/09/2018 18:54

The Works is amazing for children’s books, I get loads there. For DH and me, second hand off amazon and charity shops.

Books are both an essential and a treat! They’re my favourite thing.

kezzy13 · 23/09/2018 18:54

Kindle unlimited is amazing. £7.99 after 30 day free trial, although it has disrupted my sleep because I'm staying awake until around 1am every night reading. Hmm

BennettonColours · 23/09/2018 18:55

What is Kindle unlimited? 7.99 and you can download any book?
