Do you see books as a treat?

I love reading, I really do. I have a library card but the library stock is crap- Maeve Binchy on one side and Lee Childs on the other. DC are getting a bit older and aren't impressed with the selection for their age either.

I buy about 3 books a month (but I rarely buy clothes, take away coffees etc). But taking the children to Waterstones etc can really add up.

Books aren't treats here. The DCs don't often shop with me but when they do if they ask for books I always say yes. DH disagrees and thinks they should be treats, but I always feel like the DCs should have as many interesting books as possible.

Kindle Unlimited is brilliant but real books smell so delicious I won't ever stop buying them.

GrumpyOldMare · 23/09/2018 21:36

No,to me they're an essential. 250+ books on my kindle plus 4 bookshelves of books and piles of books on the stairs!

BennettonColours · 23/09/2018 21:37

I am another very quick reader, unless it's something more difficult. I can finish a book over a day, especially as my DC are more independent.

They are a necessity for me and the kids. We also buy from Waterstones.. I love it in there and I also want to help support a bookshop on the high street! Imagine if Waterstones went broke.. there would be very few actual bookshops on high streets. Makes me shudder

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/09/2018 21:38

I love waterstones

But im always doing that thing where you find a book and then want to get your half price one Grin

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 23/09/2018 21:38

Charity shops - particularly oxfam have a huge range of books.

The works and the book people have amazing online deals.

eBay and amazon for pennies.

Kindle is also a lifesaver.

I too love browsing so we go and nosy and find a few titles and then go find the cheapest way to get it

BennettonColours · 23/09/2018 21:39

I try to use the supporting the economy excuse too, but we could easily spend a fortune.

(although as DH points out, we don't have sky, we don't tend to eat out etc)

I love reading too and when DD was very little most of her books came from charity shops or a set from book people to bulk out xmas and birthday presents. Browsing in charity shops introduced me to some authors I may not have considered and you can also donate them back. Summer fairs and fetes always have 5 books for a £1. I now mainly read on the kindle app and a treat is waiting for a new book from your favourite author. I found Kindle unlimited to be a total waste of money. The books available were awful!

LusaCole · 23/09/2018 21:39

I love buying books for me and the DC. A trip to Waterstones does end up being expensive but to me it's worth it for the joy of browsing through the shelves, which you don't get from Amazon etc.

Also I get what people are saying about supporting bookshops. I just wish I could afford it! My library would have cost hundreds of thousands if I'd bought all first hand from high street stores. Makes me sad =[

Lwmommy · 23/09/2018 21:41

I have kindle unlimited because i read at least 3 books a week and cant keep uo with the cost of that. The range is more limited and you get lots of self published and unknown authors but i have read tonnes of great books.

BennettonColours · 23/09/2018 21:43

I think I will investigate the library more first. I'd be very disappointed if the library closed, quite hypocritically.

Whenever we go to london, which isnt often, i have to go to foyles

Do you know what i am going to do when i win millions on the lottery?

Im going to buy books...lots and lots of books...and im going to replace my charity store agatha christies with brand new ones...all with the same cover

Oh my god i wish i could win the lottery ...plus asda and tesco seem to have stopped their 'buy two for £7' gits

PandorasBag · 23/09/2018 21:49

I reserve a lot of books from my local library. The local authority itself is very large so books can be brought in from elsewhere in the city.

I buy from charity shops and also get a lot from Abebooks.

I don't like Waterstones at all - but there aren't any independents in my city.

Nottingham people, do support the wonderful Five Leaves bookshop if you don't go there already...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/09/2018 21:50

Can you imagine going to foyles and just going

Ill have that one, and that one and that one

Stuff harrods!! Im off to a book shop

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/09/2018 21:50

Now off to google abebooks

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/09/2018 21:52

madmomma · 23/09/2018 22:15
