What car do you have and how far would you get on £60 petrol?

Car is getting old (2006 Golf 1.4) but recently it seems to do SO few miles. Costs £60 to fill the tank, that does around 350 miles. Only lasts me about 10 days... Is that a normal amount? I feel like I need a more economical car!

Looking at getting a Skoda Fabia or Toyota Auris next year.

Bmw 1 series and I estimate maybe 420 ish. But that's motorway driving

10 year old Micra here. £60 would be about a tank and a half which would do me for a good three weeks, or about 4 - 500 miles or so. A tank will comfortably get me to my parents and back (300 mile round trip) plus any pottering we do there, so I think that would be about right. It's a great little car, apart from the fact that it seems to encourage people to cut you up - there seem to be a few stereotypes associated with it.

Skoda Karoq. £50 fills the tank and is probably about 400 miles, but it’s new and consumption should improve over time. It’s usually short journeys too, so not as good as long journeys.

Fiesta with the newer boost engine. It is lively, easy to park, goes miles on a tank of petrol. Went from London area to Norfolk recently and the return journey didn’t get anyway near half full. Also NO ROAD TAX.

I'd expect to get that out of my 3l estate or my old 2l turbo silly toy car so would be very disappointed to get that from a 1.4... especially as most of the journeys you mention are long! 3l estate gets about 22 on short town journeys.

First check would be tyres - are the fully inflated to the correct pressure for the load. If ok check tracking as if really off can affect fuel economy and tyre wear.

If new tyres required try to replace with something rated well for economy although depending on location need to balance vs wet grip as well.

Then would check the car out properly- something is not right with a 1.4 getting that bad fuel economy on largely extra-urban usage!

These are amazing. 2009 Polo here, £55 to fill up and does a max of 340 miles of hilly city driving on that 😟

3l Touareg only driven round town (haven’t taken it on a long journey yet!) gets about 23mpg, and £60 would be just over half a tank.

Volvo V50 £60 gets me about 500 miles on the motorway, not much for local driving as there are lots of narrow roads, horrendous traffic, cyclists, pedestrians etc.

I have a 15 year old Citroen C3 1.4 diesel and £60 would get me about 630-650 miles.

I checked my car's 'computer' this morning.

I get approx 41 to 42 mpg.

According to Which avg figures are:
Combined
Diesel 53.8
Petrol 44.9
Hybrid 50.6

Around Town
D 49.7
P 38.6
H 92.4

Motorway
D 45.2
P 38.1
H 37.3

I have a BMW i3 (all electric)
It costs me £20 a month to charge on economy 7 electric - that does me £15,000 miles a year!

So your £60 would get me 3 months of driving, so about 3750 miles

Kezzie200 · 19/09/2018 12:03

My £45 fill goes about 360 miles according to the snazzy car computer - its a 1.5 litre. I think my 1 litre Aygo did the same on £35, no car computer. My husbands 2 litre estate drinks petrol, some sort of posh unleaded too - I ignore the cost as much as I can but its useful for carrying large loads.
