What car do you have and how far would you get on £60 petrol?

Car is getting old (2006 Golf 1.4) but recently it seems to do SO few miles. Costs £60 to fill the tank, that does around 350 miles. Only lasts me about 10 days... Is that a normal amount? I feel like I need a more economical car!

Looking at getting a Skoda Fabia or Toyota Auris next year.

Diesel A3 SLine Quattro (and a heavy right foot) would get me around 500 miles I would think.

There are fuel consumption tables for all cars easily available on the internet. Bear in mind the manufacturers values are usually wrong as they are usually 'economical with the truth'. Think, take everything removeable out of it, including spare wheel, and have a small light driver and the minimum fuel to make the test.
You can compare typical 'urban' cycles though as a rough guide.
HOW you drive can be a big factor as well as many short trips where it never really warms up 'drinks' the petrol. Having aircon on does as well.

I have a 59 plate Auris, 1.3 litre engine. Costs me about £50-55 to fill the tank from almost empty and it'll do about 400 miles before filling up again (much better on long journeys but I usual do shorter). Cheap to insure too, just cost me £250ish (but that's with a lot of no claims bonus)

About 550 miles with a 2013 petrol Golf.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 18/09/2018 21:35

Mini Cooper (and a heavy right foot) means I'd get about 500 miles ish on £60 of fuel.

Elphame · 18/09/2018 21:36

That would get me about 350 miles in my MX-5

RedPandaMama · 18/09/2018 21:37

Wow so mine really isn't doing so great then Sad

Haven't had it serviced recently no. To be honest it has a few issues, exhaust is blowing (don't actually know what that means but the mechanic told me this a few months ago) but it's still safe to drive. We've just bought a house so can't afford any big repairs or things as every pound counts at the moment. Don't really have a choice with the petrol costs though as where I work is rural and I need a car to do my job. Work do pay for some of my petrol costs though which helps.

I'm doing my best to drive more economically, less harsh on the gas when speeding up etc. I do use the aircon often though as baby kicks off in the back when I open the windows, does that really make a difference? I'll have to try.

I've looked at fuel consumption tables but I just don't think they're realistic. My car apparently does 48mpg but I think I'm getting about 28, I just wanted some honest answers from real people.

By my 45mpg calc on a 2 litre s max 466 miles.
Round trip to Scotland is £120.

Gardeninginsummer1 · 18/09/2018 21:39

Seat. I would get 600 miles

schooltripwoes · 18/09/2018 21:39

A Kia C'eed (1.6 diesel). It costs around £60 for a full tank. I could do around 650-700 motorway miles for that, or 450 ish pootling around at home doing the school run etc.

xyzandabc · 18/09/2018 21:41

10 yr old 1.8 Toyota verso. £60/65 is a full tank, does 330 miles or there abouts. It's old, it's a 7 seater, is not great to look at but until it dies, its practical.

RedPandaMama · 18/09/2018 21:44

Also the driving I do is:

50 mile 90% motorway round trip 2x a week to work.
60 mile 80% motorway round trip 1x a week to see grandma.
30-50ish 50:50 motorway/A road miles one weekend day driving to local attractions for family day e.g. zoo, nearest city etc.
Then anything from 20-40 miles town driving during the week to shops, picking DP up from station.

Land Rover Discovery '03

550-600 miles per tank

BUT. £120+ to fill as it's 90 litres Blush

salopek · 18/09/2018 21:56

2016 BMW X5

About £100 a week on diesel Confused

salopek · 18/09/2018 21:57

Sorry, probably every 2 weeks!

meikyo · 18/09/2018 22:01

I would get precisely nowhere on £60 of petrol ( electric car!) but would get over 1500 miles on £60 of electricity. ..Zoe driver (over 200 miles on a single charge)...

BellaShLex · 18/09/2018 22:02

A full tank in my Fiat 500 costs £35-40 and I get around 350 miles from that with 50/50 motorway and town driving.

Witchend · 18/09/2018 22:16

Zafira.
I'd guess around 500miles, although could be quite a bit further if it's motorway driving.
Roughly the petrol gauge is split into 1/8ths. When I'm doing the normal local runs I reckon getting to the half way is 200 miles. However I know the last 1/8th runs much further than the 50 miles you expect and the light for 50 miles left comes on when it looks on 0.

I usually fill up once a week and it's usually around the half way mark, and I pay around £30 for half a tank.

Pashazade · 18/09/2018 22:21

Yup I'm afraid my 2007 golf 1.6 fsi petrol does 500-550 on a full tank. Motorway driving usually slightly more economical. But I've only got 90k on the clock. Depending on your mileage the engine could have been working harder for longer!

littlemissblue · 18/09/2018 22:27

BMW X5 4.8i 2008 - £60 would get me to the nearest fuel station 😫 no it would do about 100 miles

OhTheRoses · 18/09/2018 22:28

Full tank in an ageing SMax (Diesel) £80ish and about 550/600. Combination of town and motorway (more town).

LBOCS2 · 18/09/2018 22:33

2010 Volvo XC90. £75 to fill it up - I get about 22mpg. It's not very economical at all (but I love it anyway).

Thatstheendofmytether · 18/09/2018 22:38

I have a nissan quashqui +2 diesel. I only usually put about £20 a time in my car 2hich will get me about 180 miles, last 2 or 3 days depending what we use the car for.

ForeverFaithless · 18/09/2018 23:01

2014 Skoda Octavia automatic
50 litres of petrol takes me 800 to 850 kilometres, no commuting to work, just local shopping and motorway driving. It's a great car and a pleasure to drive especially in comparison to my previous 14 year old car

Thebluedog · 18/09/2018 23:03

Honda Civic diesel 2014. £60 would fill up the tank and I regularly get 600 miles from a tank full. I do about 20’000 miles a year with work and I love the car, it’s comfy, cheap to run and reliable. It’s my second Honda and I’d look to replace this with another one.
