Maggots in bin help don't read if eating!

So my general waste bin was taken today and yesterday it was so full I had to put one bag in the big recycling bin (as big as the normal dustbin) to be transferred over today. Just went to transfer it over and there are hundreds of maggots on the bin bag and so all through the recycling. Absolutely disgusting. I've dealt with maggots in the main dustbin before but this is worse cos there's all the recycling in there too. I only put the bag in there overnight. So gross. I now feel sick. What can I do? When they have been in the other one I've waited until it's empty and cleaned the bin out. Not nice but I've done it. This time I don't know what to do cos it's all mixed up. I'm not moving the bag into the correct bin as firstly it's disgusting but also then I will be transferring the problem if that makes sense. And there's recycling I'm there too but it's all mixed up. I've chucked loads of bleach in the recycling bin. Help! And sorry if you are eating. We are very clean people but live near a cow field so get lots of flies.

Kill them with salt and double bag

Doyoumind · 18/09/2018 14:35

Boiling water and Jeyes are also good but I've found it takes a while for the buggers to actually die. I would give up on the recycling and tip it all into a few bin bags.

Alternatively you could tip it out and sort once they are dead. The birds will sort the dead maggots in the morning though it's not great if you've been at them with the bleach of course.

Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 14:36

Does salt kill them? If I don't get them all do they multiply?

If I double bag that means touching the bin bag and it's just crawling with them. I can't face it!

OP posts:
Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 14:39

I can't tip it out. Then I will see thousands of them. I'm a bit phobic about this sort of thing. I'm guessing they will be crawling all over the recycling and there's loads in there. I'm tempted to phone the council and see if they will just take it away and give me a new bin! I know I will have to pay. I can't have them take it away for recycling cos all the recycling in there will be no good now will it. So I'm guessing I need to speak to the council anyway.

Salt didn't work for me. I tried everything. Everything takes a while but Jeyes and boiling water did it. Leave it until they're dead before you do anything with what's in the bin itself but I would get the bin bag out and double bagged otherwise they'll keep appearing from it.

NotSoThinLizzy · 18/09/2018 14:41

Take the bin up and take it to the tip? And just bin it and ask council for new bin?

NotSoThinLizzy · 18/09/2018 14:41

Ment tape

Doyoumind · 18/09/2018 14:42

I realise it's painful but the council won't take the bin and give you a new one. Have you got someone who can give you a hand to double bag?

Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 14:54

If i take it to the tip that means putting it in my car. I can't do that I will get maggots in my car! Surely the council will help me if I pay? I'm sure there are bin cleaning services. Oh god do they just keep appearing im going to vomit I think. Will the bleach kill them?

OP posts:
Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 14:54

Oh tape it up. I see. Nope it's still not going in my car!!

fleshmarketclose · 18/09/2018 14:57

Take it up the path open the lid and the birds will eat them all. Any that escape the hedgehogs will get. You will get up to a bin without maggots.

andreasfault · 18/09/2018 14:59

For the immediate problem, leave the lid open, they don't like the light so you'll see fewer.

Move the rubbish into the correct bin and wait until they're emptied. Boiling water will kill them, and then give the bins a really good wash out. Then wash them again.

chuckiecheese · 18/09/2018 15:01

Stick it all in bags/double bags & take to tip.

Hot water & jeyed/dettol & rinse bin. Watering can maybe?

Leave open to dry or tip upside down to dry.

Confused
SendYouUpInFlames · 18/09/2018 15:05

You people saying stick it in the car.

Have you never seen a general waste bin?
Most cars wouldn't fit it in.

OP. Its gross, we've had them over the summer period. We have bin ckeaning service that comes straight after emptying that cleans it out, frenshens it and puts a liner in.

We were still getting some but not as many.
We eventually managed to kill them all off by just leaving them. They ended up all just dying. We've not had them since.

Definitley invest in a bin cleaning service and just leave them to die. Doesn't take long and if it's being cleaned weekly they'll not multiply.

Whatusernamecanihave · 18/09/2018 15:09

I have no idea how to help just wanted to say you have all my sympathy I cannot stand maggots :/

On a seperate note fun fact for you all did you knew that sometimes flys have maggots inside them? I did not, squashed a fly and immediately loads of maggots spewed from its belly

I felt ill for hours afterwards

Good luck op x

ziggiestardust · 18/09/2018 15:13

Boiling water and tip it up and out over outside, but away from your house! The birds will get them. After that, bleach the bin to stop flies from laying anymore, especially round the rim and the lid.

Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 15:13

Oh god that's gross. I'm always killing flies. Think i actually am going to be sick now. I've just rung the council and spoke to a lovely woman. She's emailing to see if someone will help me. She's said it's a contaminated bin and sometimes they will come and sort it for you. Will Google bin cleaning services too. Will chuck some boiling water in there as well.

OP posts:
Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 15:14

I can't tip it out. It's full of recycling. Otherwise I would.

Also; it makes no difference if you are clean or not! I’ve found that this summer has just been CRAZY, my neighbours were complaining about it with us a few weeks back!

Try bungeeing the bin lids shut; one hook over the wheely bin handle, stretch the cord over the top of the lid and clip the other hook to the under rim of the bin to hold it closed, if that makes sense. Also helps with foxes!

Babdoc · 18/09/2018 15:16

They’re just the larval form of house flies, OP. If you leave them, they’ll just metamorphose into flies and fly away. They’re no more scary than caterpillars and won’t hurt you.
They’re used in surgery to eat necrotic tissue, and they’re good at munching up rotting meat in your bin. I’ve said before on MN, just think of them as tiny wingless vultures, or little carrion crows, cleaning up your waste food for you!

ziggiestardust · 18/09/2018 15:17

When do they take your recycling? Open the lid, push it down the garden and let the birds pick off as many as possible in the mean time. Then, when the bin is emptied, you can clean it properly.

Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 15:34

They don't take it for another week. The grossness is partly cos there are so many of them.

OP posts:

Open the lid, push it down the garden and let the birds pick off as many as possible in the mean time.

OP can't do that, there's bleach in there now.

I hate the damned things. Really hate them (traumatic experience when I was young). But when I've had them in the bin, I just have to put gloves on, get the bag out, and double, triple bag it.

Or if possible get them out away from the house and let birds etc eat them.

I had to deal with some yesterday, it was disgusting (cat food is terrible for attracting flies), there were so many, a horrible roiling mass.

A (large) glass of wine afterwards helped.

Namechangeforhair · 18/09/2018 16:04

I also can't do that cos there is now recycling on top of them so the birds won't be able to get to them. The thought of them just multiplying is making me feel so ill.

OP posts:
EscapeToTheMoon · 18/09/2018 16:40

Boiling water. Why are so many of you getting maggots?
