I've charity shopped something DH has put on ebay - what can I do?

Whilst decluttering I made 2 piles: one for charity shop, one for DH to put on ebay. Due to miscommunication, I've just realised DH has put an item on that I l took to charity shop last week (he and I don't talk much!). There's some busy bidding on it and it ends soon - is there anything I can do?

I've rung the charity shop and the item was snapped up as soon as it hit the shop floor.

There's nothing I can do, is there?

End the auction on eBay.

Finnwood · 15/09/2018 09:47

I can't as there are bidders.

I thought one could cancel bids if > 24 hours to run.
Else you'll have to grovel for forgiveness to the winning bidder.
Can try Ebay chatline, but I don't know if they can help.

Can you cancel the listing/amend to add a high reserve, or is it too late?

2 possible options:

Honest - message the highest bidder as soon as the auction is over, tell them the truth, apologise and refund any money if they have paid. Expect neutral or negative feedback.

Dishonest - If you have a 2nd eBay account, place a ridiculously high bid on the item just before the auction ends, then cancel the sale after.

AdoreTheBeach · 15/09/2018 09:51

There is a means within eBay to contact them. Do so and advise them that the item is no longer available.

Additionally, can you remain on line and cancel all the bids?

If timing doesn’t work out for eBay to help you, and someone “wins” the auction, immediately contact them and let them know the item is no longer available, then cancel the sale.

UnderTheSleepingBaby · 15/09/2018 09:51

Get someone you know to massively outbid everyone?

I'm sure there must be a way to get ebay to remove it (if you listed something glass and then it got broken you'd have to because it was no longer as described, for example) but I'm not sure how.

HoldOnTight · 15/09/2018 09:54

Or get a friend to do this

Whatsthisbear · 15/09/2018 09:55

I can't as there are bidders

You can cancel. Just say the item has been broken/damaged as the reason.

I won a really large item for a great price and the *#@& seller actually cancelled the sale after I had won it because he wanted a better price!

Finnwood · 15/09/2018 10:05

Thanks for replies.

So I can cancel the item and confess to the seller. Probably affect my rating but don't have much choice.

I'm wary of schill bidding as I don't want to be banned for eternity (or whatever ebay does!)

Cancel the item before it sells. You can do this wjeb it has bids - you jist have to cancel each bid first and you can send the bidders a polite message explaining why - theres a page on eBay where you do this and then when there are 0 bids on the item then you can cancel the listing.

I would do it like this then you can't get bad feedback from a winning bidder who think you are spinning them a story because the item didn't sell for as much as you hoped.

Fresta · 15/09/2018 10:22

You can just end the auction if it hasn't sold yet- they are just bidders at this stage, not buyers so you don't need to contact them- they can't leave feedback.

WisdomSearcher · 15/09/2018 10:22

Post the link.

I'm sure one of us will happily bid Grin

I once sold an item on Ebay and when I was parcelling it up, I accidentally knocked it off my work top and it was chipped. I immediately explained and the seller was very understanding. I gave them a refund and received positive feedback for my honesty.

I sold quite a rare (but not especially valuable) double CD to a buyer in France - one of a load of old ones that I'd hardly listened to, but wasn't bother about any more. I checked it before sending it out (I know - too late) and noticed a big mark on one of the discs. No problem, I thought - that happens a lot, but they still always play fine. Not this one, when I checked it, and it affected about a third of one CD, making it jumpy.

I contacted him, apologised and asked if he still wanted it for the cost of the postage, he said yes, so I refunded the rest and sent it. He was happy and I (although embarrassed) had cleared something that I didn't want without just chucking it away.

makingmiracles · 17/09/2018 01:19

Pm me if you want me to bid high on the item so no one else wins it, im happy to do so, you can then cancel the sale after i win the auction

AsleepAllDay · 17/09/2018 01:20

I'm sure you can cancel bids - I've had that done for active listings

Rebecca36 · 17/09/2018 03:04

Just be honest with husband and bidders, have the listing removed. These things happen, better to fess up before end of auction.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/09/2018 03:48

Am I the only one wondering if the person who snapped it up at the charity shop loves it so much and is utterly overjoyed to have found another one on eBay, which s/he is currently winning, and is excitedly looking forward to having a matching pair to take pride of place in the living room?! ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/09/2018 04:29

I'm wondering how the husband managed to put it on ebay without taking a photo of it first - would he not have noticed it was missing when he went to get a photo? or did he just happen to have a photo of it already?

BitOutOfPractice · 17/09/2018 04:45

Am I the only one desperate to know what it is?

user12678356 · 17/09/2018 04:53

Disregard what @Kezebel suggested.

Ebay monitor/ store browser details & IP address. If you bid from a second account you very likely will get caught and have both accounts and possibly you suspended from Ebay indefinitely. Google this!

Pavlova31 · 17/09/2018 05:06

Good point about the duplication WeBuilt. Was thinking the same myself 😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/09/2018 06:26

Am I the only one desperate to know what it is?

Indeed, you are not!!

imsorryiasked · 17/09/2018 06:41

You can definitely cancel the listing - go to your item listings and on the right hand side of the one though want to cancel there is a drop down menu (usually says revise item I think) click the drop down and cancel item well appear. It will give you a choice of reasons for cancelling one of which is "the item is no longer available". You dont need to do anything else and there is no feedback opportunities as the item isn't sold.
