Are you someone who has very few clothes?

I was just thinking about this, because there was obviously a time when most less off people only had 2 or 3 outfits but times have changed and most people, no matter what their economic circumstances (at least in places like the UK) have more than they need... But I do know, for example, someone who appears to always wear the same 2 or 3 things, even though I know she is not poor. I have often tried to work out why that might be, and it may be to do with feeling guilty about spending on herself...

I mostly wear the same 4 or 5 outfits simply because it's easy and I wash them regularly. I buy good quality and a bit more expensive but wear them a lot as opposed to buying lots of cheap stuff just so I can wear something different. I mix up accessories etc.

SillyBub · 14/09/2018 22:28

I think you're talking about me.

I hate shopping. That's all there is to it.

I have one pair of work trousers (I work full time). 2 work tops that also become home tops at the weekend when it's not summer. One pair of jeans. One pair of jean cut offs. Two t-shirts. That. Is. It.

I want to care. I don't.

TeenTimesTwo · 14/09/2018 22:28

I don't like shopping.
I don't find stuff I actually like, that also fits nicely.

Example. I have been looking for a hoodie all year. The arms are too tight, or they have brand names written all over them. So I stick with my existing single one which has seen better days.

Octavella · 14/09/2018 22:29

but times have changed I have two pairs of very old jeans, one pair of shoes and a few old tops. I wish I could afford to pay for more btw.

On another note. Yes it can be guilt. Or there are ppl that just hate shopping. Some hate their figure or some just hate searching and don't know what suits them or they just can't find anything they like.

BertieBotts · 14/09/2018 22:30

Teen, try the men's section. I find women's hoodies are rarely comfy.

Neolara · 14/09/2018 22:30

I have one pair of winter trousers. I hate shopping and find it depressing. Easier not to have to decide what to wear in the morning. Don't particularly care about clothes.

Shesaysso · 14/09/2018 22:32

I have hardly any clothes. I hate shopping and am really fussy about types of material and can’t bear to wear long sleeves. Consequently I have a very sparse wardrobe.

DottyDotAgain · 14/09/2018 22:32

I have found my people Grin. I have one pair of work trousers and a couple of work tops that I also wear at the weekend Blush two whole pairs of jeans...! Then a couple of fleecy tops for the weekend. And that's pretty much it. Just can't be bothered to buy any more clothes - I like what I've got and that's that!

SpeedofaSloth · 14/09/2018 22:33

I sew, but slowly. I can't bring myself to buy much as I know that with a bit of help I could make a nicer garment in not-polyester, but I'm really very slow, so not many clothes.... Most of my sewing group are pondering the same, it seems.

Causeimunderyourspell · 14/09/2018 22:33

I think you might be on about me! In a week I will wear;

7 pairs of black leggings
7 black longline vests
7 black floaty 'over-vests' (as I like to call them)

It's cause I'm fat and I don't know what the hell to buy and also hate spending money on myself unless it's what I deem as needed such as toiletries. Gah!

On a positive, there's zero faff getting dressed in the morning Grin

Notcontent · 14/09/2018 22:35

Interesting. Yes, I suppose some people just have absolutely no interest in clothes or shopping...

Octavella - if you did want some more things, could you hunt around some charity shops? Or even, dare I say, somewhere like primark?

I have lots of pre-baby clothes and fully intended to get back to pre baby weight and wear them again so reluctant to buy too many clothes in my larger size! ‘Baby’ is now nearly 8 Blush

UpstartCrow · 14/09/2018 22:38

When I find something I like that fits, I buy 3 of them. So it looks like I only have 3 or 4 sets of clothes.

TeenTimesTwo · 14/09/2018 22:38

If I find something I like, I might by 3 so they last longer / can go in the wash. So it might look like I'm wearing the same thing, but I'm not really.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/09/2018 22:40

I'm not one of these people but I wish I was! I have far far too many clothes, the majority of which no longer fit me, or bought on a whim and not worn. I am trying to buy better quality and have certainly bought very few items in the past few years. I've also filled the local charity shops but there's more work to be done....

UpstartCrow · 14/09/2018 22:41

Enjoli · 14/09/2018 22:43

Ha. Maybe I'm her.

I appear to wear the same thing all the time. That's because I have at least 3 of each item! I like a system.

ItsLikeNew · 14/09/2018 22:43

I have 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of cut of jean shorts, a few summer tops/camiso, 3 jumpers, 2 cardigans, 2 blazers, some holey long sleeve t-shirt thingys, 3-4 summer dresses.
I have more formal clothes in the wardrobe too.
most of my clothes are at least 3 years old apart from the jeans that I replace as and when.

I might buy the odd top or dress once or twice a year. I haven't bought any yet this year.

I think I've got some leggings knocking about in draw somewhere, but haven't worn them in a long time.

as you can gather, I'm not really bothered by clothes, I don't like clothes shopping as if I go its because I have an idea in my head as to what I want and I hate wasting time trawling all over to find I can't find it.

JennyHolzersGhost · 14/09/2018 22:46

I am extremely interested in clothes but unfortunately clothes aren’t interested in me. I find it incredibly dispiriting and depressing to try and shop. I have a clear idea of what I want but the amount of effort and ego-damage involved just isn’t worth it. If I was rich one of the first things I would do would be to find a dressmaker who could knock up my desired wardrobe to fit. In the meantime, yes I dress pretty boringly.

Octavella · 14/09/2018 22:47

if you did want some more things, could you hunt around some charity shops? Or even, dare I say, somewhere like primark?

I can't afford bus fare so will look on ebay but I can't afford that atm. (I'm not feeling sorry for myself btw, just saying when you pay for bread in 5ps, or pay 20p in cash and the other 20p on card for something it's hard to justify spending money on clothes. Sure won't be forever though. I just have been wanting some boots so i couldn't help comment on your opening post even though I know im being sensitive. I suppose it makes me fussy too and guilty.

Fairylea · 14/09/2018 22:47

I have about 3 jumpers and 3 different trousers / jeans. I just can’t be bothered with much else to be honest. I do enjoy clothes and knowing what’s “in” but I hate shopping as such, online or in real life. I am a gym / outdoor person and would much rather be doing that!

Babdoc · 14/09/2018 22:47

Yay, definitely my people also! I buy a job lot of ten white T shirts online, every few years. I have a pair of jeans, two pairs of cotton summer trousers and two pairs of warm cords for winter.
Two thin hoodies for summer, two thick ones for winter. Done.
It helped that I worked in an operating theatre all my life, so didnt need work clothes (surgical scrubs), and I’m now retired so live in my casual stuff.
I have always loathed clothes shopping. Possibly because I’m autistic, with sensory issues, and clothes shops tend to have loud music and lots of nasty feeling synthetic fabrics.

DontFuckingSayIt · 14/09/2018 22:50

I own a shitload of clothes, the majority of which are too big or too small because I'm a bit of a yo-yo dieter... I actually wear one pair of work trousers and onr blouse (both polyester, i wash and hang every night), one good pair of jeans for going anywhere nice-ish and one scruffier pair for dog walking and school run, a couple of black vests and three or four nice enough tops to go over them. A couple of cardigans, a leather jacket, a raincoat and a winter coat.

Not all at the same time, mind.

PlatypusPie · 14/09/2018 22:50

I tend to wear variations of the same thing, so though I have a relatively full wardrobe, there aren’t a lot of very different styles outfits iyswim

There are often fashion page pronouncements that you should buy few but the best quality you can. I have a friend is very well off, wealthy in fact, and always looks stylish and appropriate without looking flashy. I was surprised to see just how small her wardrobe is - expensive, designer pieces ( £500 jumpers, £1000 trousers, £OMG evening wear ) but not many at all.
