Are you someone who has very few clothes?

I was just thinking about this, because there was obviously a time when most less off people only had 2 or 3 outfits but times have changed and most people, no matter what their economic circumstances (at least in places like the UK) have more than they need... But I do know, for example, someone who appears to always wear the same 2 or 3 things, even though I know she is not poor. I have often tried to work out why that might be, and it may be to do with feeling guilty about spending on herself...

This was me as a child and teen, until I got a Saturday job and was able to buy more clothes for myself. My mum didn't believe in needing more than 1 skirt or pair of jeans etc..

specialsubject · 14/09/2018 23:04

you may also have seen me. Hate shopping and can rarely find what I want. So limited selection washed and worn to destruction. One or two sets kept for smart occasions.

also begrudge spending on clothes, so boring even if I can find what I want.

AutisticHedgehog · 14/09/2018 23:04

I have absolutely zero interest in fashion. I just want to wear comfy clothes.

I do not understand this idea of “fashion“ as it seems to me people wear absolutely bizarre styles, which look hideous, but because they are fashionable they are somehow ok. It’s absolutely beyond my comprehension.

and I also don’t understand why you are bothered about what other people wear? I couldn’t give a shiny shite what you wear.

So many things are illogical. But apparently fashionable.

@Causeimunderyourspell

Exactly me without the floaty things. 7 black leggings, 7 black shirts, drawer full of black pants and socks, 3 bras, two hoodies, job done. No one in the family has a wardrobe just a set of drawers.

RebelRogue · 15/09/2018 10:12

I have quite a lot of clothes, but during the work week I mostly wear the same things. They fit the comfortable, acceptable for work,I actually like category. The rest are for time off.

HoardingQueen · 15/09/2018 20:43

I wear a pair of black jeans every day for work, and just change the tops around 5 different ones that I routinely wash after wear, as far as I am concerned this is my work 'uniform', I have plenty of other clothes to wear in my free time, but have started to realise I don't need as much so have pruned considerably and if I feel the need to buy anything else usually scour the charity shops and car boot sales. I must say though, you would never guess my clothes are mostly bought this way, I have picked up some really lovely expensive items very cheaply, can't bear (nor afford)to buy full price in shops now

TeacupDrama · 15/09/2018 21:27

most fashion is just silly, and if we think about it truly we know it is take ripped jeans for example with holes in the knees slits up the thighs they look stupid on absolutely everyone ( from ages 3-80 whatever their size shape or height) but people are convinced they look good as fashion says so celebs wear them they are on you tube but its's like the emperor's new clothes they are hideous

cold shoulder tops might not look quite so bad but again another stupid idea no-one anywhere would benefit from a cold shoulder coat, it defeats the purposes of a coat

I have more than you but realised no-one needs loads of stuff depending on your work you need as bare minimum ( not what might be useful on top of this)

  1. 2 complete work outfits whether that is super smart casual or uniform I include safety gear, shoes handbag/ rucksack/ briefcase etc with this ( plus maybe a summery version)
  1. Casual outfit weekends etc plus summer version
  1. old clothes keep for gardening decorating etc
  1. sports stuff perhaps a swimsuit trainers joggers etc
  1. in uk a waterproof & warm jacket/coat for winter possibly hat scarf and gloves and a lighter raincoat for summer

6 an extra jumper /hoody for cold days

7 underwear 2-3 bras 5 pairs of pants 5 socks or tights max 2 sets of nightwear

8 some people may need extra smart wedding evening do outing to restaurant type outfit with bag shoes etc

  1. for most people; shoes are work shoes as above plus a pair of trainers/walking shoes maybe wellies probably slides /sandals maybe slippers

I think that covers what is needed but it might not be what is wanted

often a couple of fine scarfs, nice necklace mixing outfits up etc can make it seem like more

I have more than this but have seriously culled my wardrobe

Fatted · 15/09/2018 21:33

I'm another one who buys five of the same thing in different colours etc if I like it. If you look on pintrest there's lots of things about personal uniform. I do find it hard to find clothes I like that fit (I'm short!) and are flattering and not horrid fashionable tat. So when I find something I make sure I get a few of them!!

Boyskeepswinging · 15/09/2018 21:40

I've found it particularly difficult to shop for clothes for the past couple of years so my wardrobe is diminishing as things wear out. Even naice shops use a lot of synthetic fibres and I don't think they cut their clothes as well as they used to (Jigsaw I'm looking at you). And then when eventually you find something you like a vital bit of it is missing. No shoulders, no back, no knees ... saw some lovely boots today with massive holes at the front - cold toes anyone? What the jeff is that about?!

BonnieF · 15/09/2018 21:40

Not everybody cares about clothes. I have zero interest in fashion and I hate shopping, so some people probably think I have “very few clothes”.

They can think whatever they want. I couldn’t possibly care less.

HollySwift · 15/09/2018 22:24

You probably wouldn’t think I’m ‘poor’ if you don’t know me well - I have a brand new car and a large house in a nice area... however my car was bought by my mum as we couldn’t afford £400 to get our last one through it’s MOT and my house is rented and I regularly have a bank balance in the red. Like now. We literally don’t have more than £1 to our names.

Thus, I prioritise and clothes for me aren't a priority. I simply can’t afford anything other than a yearly trip to primark for cheap jeans and t shirts. Probably spend £100 a year max, same for DH.

bumblebee39 · 16/10/2018 00:08

Reviving this- how do I get a capsule wardrobe? I want to be a person with few clothes and stop doing throwaway fashion. Cheers X
