Said this about a particularly lazy colleague today and had my immediate neighbour in tears laughing at it!

I'm Scottish and she's English, she claims never to have heard it before!

Ah Kevin Bridges does a braw sketch on the difference between a dog and a dug!

Youaremysunshine2017 · 14/09/2018 19:26

I'm English and DH is Scottish so I confirm that heehaw means nothing! However, he also says things like "she was heehawing and laughing" so it's obviously a word that has lots (hunnersWink) of meanings.

Here's a funny story... when we first met we were long distance. Id called one day and His parents were away on holiday and he told me he was going over to their house with "messages". For the next few days i panicked over whether I could be in a relationship with a man who misses his parents so much when they go on holiday that he goes over to leave messages to tell them how much he missed them. Turns out he took some bread and milk over. Grin

ILoveMyBobbleHat · 14/09/2018 19:28

she was heehawing and laughing

Oh yes, that's completely different Grin

I LOVE the messages story. You must have thought he was a right mammy's boy Grin

I’m Eng.ish and I’ve never heard of it and we’re in the North West but still use a Big Light Smile

*he poetry, music and art of Scotland and I share the wonders of 'heehaw'.

Next week I shall introduce clapping the dog*.

Looking forward to the next Cultural Exchange. Can I offer you “you’re a nest carrot”?

apostropheuse · 14/09/2018 19:29

Going the messages!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/09/2018 19:30

Bloody autocorrect. Nesh Carrot.

howardmoonseyebrow · 14/09/2018 19:30

I’m Welsh and I say the big light 👍🏻 loving hee haw and clapping the dog 😁

FairlyOddmother · 14/09/2018 19:31

Tennents have brought out alcohol free lager called HeeHaw. Genius.

esk1mo · 14/09/2018 19:32

is clapping a dog more Glaswegian? i heard it growing up in Glasgow but now i’m in Edinburgh and it’s “pet” instead of “clap”

Youaremysunshine2017 · 14/09/2018 19:32

I did panic a bit! Grin

Unikittycorn · 14/09/2018 19:32

I didn’t realise clapping the dog was a Scottish thing.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 14/09/2018 19:33

My geordie grandma would say Clap the dog. Chap the door... Skelp your bahookie...pull the skelf out of your finger

RaininSummer · 14/09/2018 19:35

Total southerner who uses big light but the heehaw one is new to me. Thought it was something rude to do with donkeys.

corlan · 14/09/2018 19:35

I have to ask - What's 'clapping the dog' mean?

apostropheuse · 14/09/2018 19:36

An old friend of my mother's was in England with her English husband, visiting family. The host offered her husband some more tea, to which my mother's friend (who was very broad) said:

I'll tak a wee tate tae hen

Well, understandably, the host was completely flummoxed at this! Grin Fortunately the English husband translated.

esk1mo · 14/09/2018 19:36

corlan pet, stroke Smile

ILoveMyBobbleHat · 14/09/2018 19:36

Ah well, Glasgow funeral and Edinburgh wedding etc. They're no fun over there.

What is a nesh carrot?

Everyone should watch Still Game to learn more of our wonderful Scottish vernacular! Not to hijack the thread, but "glaikit" is one of my favourite words!

esk1mo · 14/09/2018 19:37

as in can i clap your dog? = can i stroke/pet/touch your dog

CryptoFascist · 14/09/2018 19:39

I'm English and I say the Big Light. Really tickled by the messages story!

corlan · 14/09/2018 19:40

Thank you esk1mo.

Ellegeebee · 14/09/2018 19:46

Actual lols! I’ve just asked my very Scottish wife about this and she laughed and said “yep, the equivalent of Scottish rhyming slang, heehaw... bugger all”

Shampaincharly · 14/09/2018 19:48

Oh yes regarding the messages !
Also for me “going away to do something “
. The people I worked with were asking, why are you still here?

Youaremysunshine2017 · 14/09/2018 19:50

Oh another thing that took me a while to get my head round was "where do you stay?" Instead of "where do you live?" I felt like everyone was temporarily living in their homes.

Clarabumps · 14/09/2018 19:53

I'm Scottish so I know " hee haw bugger aw". I also say going the messages( shopping) and going "a message" (to do something).
My granny called the hall the lobby but I fear this is dying out now. Lobby pronounced "loab-y"
