Said this about a particularly lazy colleague today and had my immediate neighbour in tears laughing at it!

I'm Scottish and she's English, she claims never to have heard it before!

Yes, it means nothing. English with Scottish relatives here!

Awrite · 14/09/2018 19:10

I use it a lot. Said with a broad Scottish accent, it is rather beautiful.

MerlinsScarf · 14/09/2018 19:11

For your next trick, find something in your office that's squint.

ILoveMyBobbleHat · 14/09/2018 19:11

Squint is terribly posh, I prefer squinty.

MerlinsScarf · 14/09/2018 19:14

Oh bonus points for squinty!

allyouneedis · 14/09/2018 19:14

We are Scottish but for some reason don’t say clapping the dog, a friend said it to my son when he was about 3 and he did just that. Clapped his hands at the dog 😂😂

Timeandtune · 14/09/2018 19:14

Is it true that we Scots are the only ones to refer to “the big light “ as in switch the big light off and just have the lamps on.

shitsabouttogetserious · 14/09/2018 19:15

I know it. But im also Scottish 😂

motherstongue · 14/09/2018 19:15

I wanted to name our dog - clap the dog. I was over ruled!

Shampaincharly · 14/09/2018 19:15

Scottish too . Yes , it means she does nothing . Lazy.

ILoveMyBobbleHat · 14/09/2018 19:16

Us and the Irish, I think.

SoyDora · 14/09/2018 19:18

No, I’m English (Midlands) and ‘the big light’ is commonly used around here. And in a lot of northern England I believe.

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/09/2018 19:19

Hee haw buckshee is one I use! In fact I’ve used it on here today Grin

Aye “the big light” is definitely a thing too.

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/09/2018 19:19

I’d love an English translation of “scunnered”. Such a beautifully descriptive word! And dreich too!

TyneTeas · 14/09/2018 19:20

I live near Scotland and I've watched Still Game, so I understand it Grin

colditz · 14/09/2018 19:20

MrsPresley · 14/09/2018 19:23

Surely you should be introducing "clapping the dug" Grin

apostropheuse · 14/09/2018 19:23

clapping the dog is stroking it

Rebecca36 · 14/09/2018 19:24

Is it like Nelson in The Simpsons does?
