Since turning fifty I've been bombarded with junk mail offering me swanky retirement homes, cheap life cover or crappy walking holidays with other "old people"
I work full time and have 5 kids one only 7 and so school, ballet, gym runs. Surely these days with longer life expectancy and people working into their 60s and 70s these company's need to rethink their target audience.
I don't know anyone my age who is ready for the knackers yard just yet Wink

I've got an advert for funeral wakes at the bottom of the page, oh dear Smile

I'm in my sixties and can't see I'll ever be able to afford to retire. I enjoy my job too much anyway.

I hate the way older people are all lumped together as OAPs and geriatrics. We're not all the same with the same tastes and needs ffs.

MervynBunter · 13/09/2018 20:32

Yep. 50+ here and I've no interest in any of them. Plus, that bloody ad with the old fool carrying in a box of parsnips gets me so riled I wouldn't insure with them if they paid me to do it!

I'm a few years over 50 and I'm definitely not ready for any of that stuff yet. I went to a festival for the 1st time this year and camped for 3 nights. I go to the gym 3 times a week, eat healthily and am hoping not to need a funeral plan any time soon. I definitely wouldn't want to go on a Saga holiday.

HeddaGarbled · 13/09/2018 20:47

You’re doing well - I seem to be in need of incontinence, menopause and wrinkle remedies!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 13/09/2018 21:03

I’m so glad you started this thread. I am 51 and also have a 7 year old (I also have a 17 year old and a 14 year old). I work full time. I can see no retirement - early or otherwise in view.

AnyFucker · 13/09/2018 21:06

TroysMammy · 13/09/2018 21:07

I'm 50 and a same age school friend has set up a Whatsapp group for other same aged school friends with the word Saga in the title! Cheeky mare Grin.

WishUponAStar88 · 13/09/2018 21:09

Ds just finished his MA; we are living abroad and returning next year when dh retires at 58. I am planning to go back to work if I can find anywhere that will take an almost 54 year old, to make sure I have all my NICs for a state pension.

I will be taking my Local Govt and Teachers pensions at 60; but will have another pension going if I get a job.

Dh has already retired from HM forces, and had had a 6 year contract abroad. He can finally spend time doing what he wants while he's still fit enough to do it!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 13/09/2018 21:58

Im 50in February, I work two demanding physical jobs, I still party hard, I have no intentions of getting old until I’m at least 65..

Helps that DP is 13 years my junior I suppose 😂😂😂.. keeps me young!

sandgrown · 13/09/2018 22:06

I am 61 with a 16 year old still in education .I have to work to at least 66. I don't intend to go in a home . I will take myself to the clinic in Switzerland if I become ill! Thankfully I am not incontinent yet and I don't need a walk in bath. I am however going on a Saga trip because they offered us the best deal to an unusual location. I agree that advertisers need to look at their target markets again

frippit · 13/09/2018 22:10

I'm 56 soon to be 57 and I'm a countryside ranger. Spent today driving back and forth, loading and unloading trailers of brash with my volunteers.
I swim and go to the gym, I love swimming in the sea. I may have 3 granddaughters but I don't feel like an OAP yet!
I'm a bit weathered from working outdoors, and certainly feel a bit creaky but I certainly don't feel old. I intend to be active for a long time yet. If I retire soon it will be to carry on with this lifestyle and take my granddaughter's camping and swimming.

OhTheRoses · 13/09/2018 22:16

I started a new career at 43. Now 58. V close to the top. Hoping to keep going for another 7/8 years x

NewName54321 · 13/09/2018 23:06

Why do they lump everyone over 50 together as though they are the same age and have the same interests?

There are 3 generations in my family over 50, so definitely not all the same.

ladybirdsaredotty · 13/09/2018 23:29

My DP is nearly 50. On his 50th, our children will all be under 8! I agree, most of the advertising feels like it's still a bit old for my parents, who are mid-late 60s. It's hilarious to think of my DP accessing any of it!

(Disclaimer to say I do understand anyone can need extra support at any time due to illness/disability, obviously I'm not laughing at that.)

MinaPaws · 13/09/2018 23:46

Same here. Soon as I turned 50 I got brochures for stair lifts, walk in baths, cruises and saga subscription offers. Of no use or interest for at least 20 years.

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2018 23:52

I'm in my mid 50s & have a demanding, professional full time job I adore & which I'm very good at. I can't imagine even thinking about retirement for many years yet.

Fatted · 13/09/2018 23:55

My parents!! Both will be 70 next year. DD still working. DM isn't but she never did!! Both still running around and looking after the kids.

BitOfFun · 13/09/2018 23:57

Seriously, Ledkr? Don't you even care about having pretty incontinence pads? Jeeez 🙄

fieryginger · 13/09/2018 23:57

The funeral plan adverts, flooding the tv at the moment, are the new PPI.

Finnwood · 14/09/2018 00:29

I keep getting ads for over 50s dating agencies - I'm sure DH will be impressed!

I'm 50+ with a 14 year old DD. After a long period of being a SAHM followed by illness I'm hoping to get back in the workplace and staying there! Don't want retirement for a long time as the past few years have taught me I'm not very good with structure/routine.

Finnwood · 14/09/2018 00:30

Sorry - that should've said I'm not very good without structure and routine.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 14/09/2018 01:29

I'm 58. I expect to need a stairlift at some point, due to fucked legs, but it will be to reach my bleeding edge gaming rig. In the meantime, I have a grandson to chase, the Cheviot to cycle up, and Druridge Bay to to bodyboard.

Ledkr · 14/09/2018 11:28

bitoffun in still enjoying it needing any sanitary products so give me a break Grin
