Is a resting heart rate of 31 a problem ?

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 17:23

I wear a HRM to monitor my fitness and recovery. My resting heart rate is typically 50-55bpm, increasing to 60ish the day after a hard training session.

Today it's been less than 40 all day and now 31. Which is off the scale, apparently the fittest athletes are around 40!

Does it matter, or is it only an issue if it drops to 0? Grin

Fwiw I've felt dreadful all day, not ill exactly but like all I want in the world is to lay down.

I think you’re dead op. RIP

Or you could be catching a cold?

🤷🏻‍♀️ 😂

AllAtHome · 13/09/2018 17:25

Speak to a dr

wurzelburga · 13/09/2018 17:28

Check the battery in your HRM and ensure you have it placed properly.

If no change see your GP.

Probably helpful if you can takemalong a series ofmreadings and the HRM for them to compare against their own monitor.

Low blood pressure is common among the super fit. But not that low.

I would do a manual bomber and assume the machine was faulty in some way.

If it’s absolutely correct manually you will need to seek medical attention.

I think it unlikely you would be able to function with a heart rate genuinely that low though, surely your brain and organs would not be getting enough oxygen.

unweavedrainbow · 13/09/2018 17:30

I would be quite worried, as it's not usual for you. I expect you feel unwell as your heart is struggling to pump blood round your body-do you feel dizzy or light headed? Bradycardia (slow heart rate) can be caused by a variety of things so I would want to talk to a doctor.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/09/2018 17:31

Wtf is bomber😏
Pulse, the word is pulse, bloody autocorrect

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 13/09/2018 17:33

Did you google?!!

salsamad · 13/09/2018 17:34

I'm in my early 50s and run for 30 mins twice a week and do yoga and I'm fairly busy. My resting heart rate was 45 on a recent health check - I was sent for an ECG by my GP as they weren't sure if this was 'normal' for me as I haven't had it taken for a long time. My BP is usually good and I don't wear a fitness monitor etc.
The ECG was fine (my rate was low until I asked what it was then it shot up as I was worrying about it being low!). The GP was happy with result as I'm a fit busy person but I'm glad I had the ECG.
Your rate today sounds very low compared to your usual normal rate of 50ish and coupled with you feeling out of sorts I think it's important you see your GP as soon as you can.

HoleyCoMoley · 13/09/2018 17:34

A pulse of 30 will make you feel unwell, can you take a manual pulse yourself. Are you on any medication that affects your heart. . If it is that low you ought to seek medical attention

Haberpop · 13/09/2018 17:36

Take a manual pulse, if it is that low you need to seek medical advice asap.

Sidge · 13/09/2018 17:37

That’s pretty low.

I see athletes with HR of 45-55 which is fine as they feel well.

I saw a woman with a pulse of 36 the other day and we sent her in to hospital...

Check your battery on your monitor, or take your pulse manually and see the GP if it’s truly that low.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/09/2018 17:39

The fact it’s that low and it isn’t normally and you feel ill you need to see a doctor if it’s that low manually. Dh runs ultra marathons and his is early 40s so 30 is crazily low imho.

ALongHardWinter · 13/09/2018 17:41

Are you a horse?! Grin Joking aside, that does sound rather low. A resting heart rate for an adult is usually between 60 - 100 beats per minute. Mine is 68,I'm quite overweight and not very fit. An extremely fit athlete would have a resting pulse rate of around 40. If yours persists in being as low as 30 bpm,you should seek medical advice.

GorgonLondon · 13/09/2018 17:43

I was kept in after an operation because my heart rate was 41. In the end I persuaded them it was normal for me. But 36 is crazy low. Have you tried taking your pulse?

Believeitornot · 13/09/2018 17:44

Check your pulse the traditional way.

Whatsthisbear · 13/09/2018 17:53

Check it manually and if it's still low speak to DR.

Crunchymum · 13/09/2018 18:02

Try and take it manually, or ask someone else to take it.

If it's still low I'd call 111, given you feel unusual / unwell too.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 18:09

OK, I've checked and the manual reading is exactly the same as the watch, although it is a bit higher (41) now I've started worrying about it!

Whatsnewwithyou · 13/09/2018 18:16

Go see a doctor, it shouldn't be that low. Mine was that low when I was having surgery and like a previous poster they kept me in.

Crunchymum · 13/09/2018 18:17

Are you alone? Do you think you may need to call someone?

I'm really not a drama llama but it's pretty low OP

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 18:18

So do I go for my run tonight? I was hoping it would perk me up

OP posts:
GorgonLondon · 13/09/2018 18:27

I wouldn't. I carried on training through (unknown to me) extremely severe, life-threatening anaemia and it did not end well!

Could you be anaemic? Are you underweight? I had both of those and very low blood pressure along with bradycardia

Allsloppy · 13/09/2018 18:29

I was told about a nurse the other day who didn’t feel unwell but Fitbit showed a low pulse like yours. She went to the doctors who immediately sent her by ambulance to the hospital and she had a pace maker fitted. Please get yourself checked out.

HoleyCoMoley · 13/09/2018 19:33

I wouldn't go out, do you have a blood pressure monitor to see what that is. I would call 111 at the very least and rest.

Moonflower12 · 13/09/2018 19:54

Just spoken to my DP who is a paramedic. He says you need to get TAKEN to A&E immediately. Do not drive. 31 is definitely a hospital visit.
