Is a resting heart rate of 31 a problem ?

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 17:23

I wear a HRM to monitor my fitness and recovery. My resting heart rate is typically 50-55bpm, increasing to 60ish the day after a hard training session.

Today it's been less than 40 all day and now 31. Which is off the scale, apparently the fittest athletes are around 40!

Does it matter, or is it only an issue if it drops to 0? Grin

Fwiw I've felt dreadful all day, not ill exactly but like all I want in the world is to lay down.

have you taken advice and sought medical help OP?

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 20:56

Oh dear, I'm not very good at taking advice. I ran (and drove there). I volunteered to be back marker so I could take it easy but didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Heart rate seemed to be normal, what I'd expect for the exertion I felt but I've been back 20 mins and it's now 32 again. I feel fine, so if it wasn't for the monitor I'd be blissfully unaware...

Why post for advice if you aren't good at taking it?

You remind me of me OP, and not in a good way Grin

When I was hospitalised for being nearly dead of anaemia, they wouldn't even let me walk from A&E to ward - I had to go in a wheelchair.

I told them that I'd been boxing and doing intense cardio 12 hours earlier, but I don't think they believed me.

I really think you should get yourself checked out, as per the proper medical advice upthread.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 13/09/2018 21:14

When my daughter was in the worst stages of her anorexia her resting heart rate was 32. She was hospitalised at that stage. And monitored hourly.

I was told that extreme athletes might have a resting heart rate of 40. But anything less than that was a sign of something wrong. Possibly very wrong.

I do think you need to seek medical help.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 21:18

I think I was probably posting for reassurance more than advice Troy's mammy, that'll teach me Grin

Can I really rock up at A&E and say I feel fine, I've just comfortably run 7 miles but this gadget and bunch of people on the Internet think I must be seriously ill?

OP posts:
GorgonLondon · 13/09/2018 21:19

are you deliberately avoiding the questions about weight, OP?

I think a heart rate of 32 is a good enough reason to go to A&E

HoleyCoMoley · 13/09/2018 21:21

Glad you're feeling ok but you did say you felt awful today, it wasn't just the gadget or a bunch of people on the internet, you took your own pulse and its very slow. Are you on any medication that affects your heart rate.

butlerswharf · 13/09/2018 21:25

Mine was extremely low and it was due to an underactive thyroid.

JintyandtheJs · 13/09/2018 21:26

Go You need urgent ECG to exclude AV block.

Whatsnewwithyou · 13/09/2018 21:29

You go and say "my rating heart rate is 32". You have checked it with a digital heart rate monitor and verified it manually.I don't know why you would need to mention the internet at all???

AnyFucker · 13/09/2018 21:29

Strange (and worrying) thread

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 13/09/2018 21:30

HR of 31 needs an ECG tonight.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 21:31

Sorry, no, I'm not underweight. 5'7" and exactly 10st

OP posts:
Fairylea · 13/09/2018 21:32

Your first post says you don’t feel well, and that is a very low heart rate. It does need checking out.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 21:33

Yes I did feel ill all day but much better now I've had my run (and am not at work!)

Haworthia · 13/09/2018 21:35

Fwiw I've felt dreadful all day, not ill exactly but like all I want in the world is to lay down.

That, plus a barely beating heart (Grin) suggests you really do need to get yourself checked. Tonight.

trulybadlydeeply · 13/09/2018 21:35

Are you on medication? Any health issues? It is also relevant to ask your weight as PPs have done.

This is not a normal resting HR, unless you are a world class athlete (I think Usain Bolt's is around that). The fact that you have been feeling unwell, and it has now gone bad k down to that, is very worrying. Please at least call 111, and preferably go somewhere tonight to get yourself checked.

Di11y · 13/09/2018 21:40

Don't rock up to a and e, call 111 and they might send you to out of hours or get someone to call you back

CoperCabana · 13/09/2018 21:40

I have a heart condition and have been hospitalised many times. On one occasion, a young woman was admitted who was in the army. Very fit obviously. She had been feeling unwell, low heart rate etc. but having exercised, she felt much better. So she carried on exercising. And then collapsed. She had something mechanical wrong with her heart and needed urgent surgery. She was fine in the end but was told she should not have ignored her initial symptoms as it then became an emergency which could have gone either way.

ragged · 13/09/2018 21:41

I reckon OP would feel dreadful if the story was as told. Some measurement is faulty.

Please keep us updated what happens?

Flaminghotcocoa · 13/09/2018 21:41

OP tbh you are being really annoying!

Medics on this thread have told you to go to hospital. It’s rare I have seen such a unanimous thread. Unless you have medical training we don’t know about please do your friends and family a favour (if not for yourself, for those who will have to find you very ill and in a heap when your heart really makes the problem known) , stop dicking about and go to hospital and get checked out.

Sorry to be rude but LISTEN!

HoleyCoMoley · 13/09/2018 21:43

I don't think you will take our advice, you seem convinced there's nothing wrong, I hope you are right but what was the point in posting if you don't want advice.

esk1mo · 13/09/2018 21:45

OP would you be so jovial if you collapsed? if you knew your family had to be informed of you being rushed to hospital?

your heart is either beating once every 2 seconds, which isnt normal, or you arent checking manually and your watch is wrong.

Stormwhale · 13/09/2018 21:46

I think it really would be wise to at least call 111 and chat it over. It sounds like you don't want to make a fuss, but it really is better to be safe than sorry. A resting heart rate of 32 is not at all normal.
