Eggs breaking on journey home from supermarket!

Has anyone got any tips on managing to get home with your big weekly shop and still have a dozen perfect eggs with absolutely none broken! Most weeks there is at least 1 broken if not 2. I always check the box before putting them in the trolley to make sure there aren't any already cracked, I then pack them carefully with soft items such as kitchen towel and pocket tissues etc, I put them in the boot making sure they can't fall over and then drive the short journey home on a smooth road! When putting the shopping away, lo and behold there's eggs either cracked or broken! Tell me how you pack yours please?

I never have this! You could put them on the passenger seat I suppose

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/09/2018 20:40

Have some bubble wrap in boot it came with a delivery, we kept it
Wrap eggs, wine it it.nothing breaks on way home

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2018 20:42

I don't have a problem with eggs, but always buy the ones in cardboard cartons. You'll just have to have omelettes or scramble for lunch on shopping day, won't you OP? You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs! Grin

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 12/09/2018 20:42

Is it always the same brand? If is every and all eggs, its you, sorry! If you always buy the same brand it could be the eggs - depending on diet the eggs can have a very thin shell, not great for the hen :(

BertieBotts · 12/09/2018 20:44

Huh? I've never known eggs to crack on the way home, and bubble wrap seems like a bizarre hassle. Put them near the top of the bag/crate and make sure that your shopping bags can't move around.

Surely if your eggs are cracking then your fruit must all be bruised and so on?

percheron67 · 12/09/2018 20:45

I put bubble wrap (from fruit section!) around my box and eggs are safe. I reuse the wrap next time.

Anythingforacatslife · 12/09/2018 20:46

In twenty five or so years of doing my own shopping I have never had this happen even once! I’m not even particularly careful packing them, other than ensuring they’re on the top rather than underneath things. I buy the ones in cardboard boxes, not plastic.

Bestseller · 12/09/2018 20:46

We get though around two dozen eggs a week, the only time one has ever broken on the way home was when I dropped a box. I'm not even that careful with the packing, the cardboard box seems to protect them fine?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/09/2018 20:49

I've never had one break on the journey home. Occasionally someone will put something on top of the cardboard box and home and the tallest egg will crack. I buy free range, I don't know whether shell thickness is affected by the type or environment of the chicken that laid the eggs.

Nothisispatrick · 12/09/2018 20:49

This has never happened to me, ever! Are you packing them under heavy stuff? Sorry that sounds obvious but I can’t think of why else it would happen.

Racecardriver · 12/09/2018 20:51

This has never happened to me.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 12/09/2018 20:51

Can't say I have ever experienced this...and I'm not particularly careful with them either.

JacquesHammer · 12/09/2018 20:52

Put them on the top of a non-tip bag.

Is the boot catching them as you close it?

xyzandabc · 12/09/2018 20:54

Can't say that's ever happened to me. I either put them on top, or just lay them flat in the boot where nothing can fall on them. Always in the cardboard egg boxes. Always laid flat wherever they are.

Are you lying them sideways or not in cardboard or where something can fall on them. Or where they can fall down somewhere? I really can't see how it would happen regularly if none of the above factors are involved.

EduCated · 12/09/2018 20:56

Another who has never had this happen Confused I’m quite gung ho about slinging them in bags too.

Do you check they’re not cracked before you buy them?

redsummershoes · 12/09/2018 20:58

never experienced it either apart from once getting eggs from a farmshop that had very thin shells.

teaandtoast · 12/09/2018 20:58

I briefly take each egg out of the cardboard box. You need to check the egg can move - sometimes they're broken and will therefore stick in place, but it's not obvious if you just glance at them.

liverbird79 · 12/09/2018 20:58

This never happens to me either.

But without fail I always end up with leaked mullerlight.

PerspicaciaTick · 12/09/2018 21:01

What on earth are you doing to the eggs? I've got a mental image of you, stood 10 foot away from your open boot, lobbing in items of shopping one by one and occasionally yelling "Scoooore".

hobblesma · 12/09/2018 21:05

Do you live up a particularly bumpy road?

hobblesma · 12/09/2018 21:06

Oh, and do you take the eggs out of the egg box and put them in a bag?

dudsville · 12/09/2018 21:07

I never have this problem either. Hold the carton in your lap?

TheLastSaola · 12/09/2018 21:08

I've never had eggs break... and my only packing rule is that they don't have anything heavy on top of them, otherwise they get chucked into whatever bag I'm packing.

Ironfloor269 · 12/09/2018 21:09

I put eggs in a separate bag and transport it on the passenger seat.

Never have had a cracked egg.

Bizarre..

confusedofengland · 12/09/2018 21:09

I either put the box of eggs on the passenger seat or on the parcel shelf. Never in the boot as too much potential for it to roll around.
