background is baby is 10 months. Last few days has been off food and drink. Temp 38.8 today and has suddenly developed these spots alongside the one spot on torso and arms. Chicken pox?

Looks like it to me. Bet he wakes up covered! Still smiling though x

welshmist · 12/09/2018 19:59

Having seen three cases of hand foot and mouth in the last fortnight I would hang fire and see.

SoyDora · 12/09/2018 20:01

Potentially HF&M

How does a baby get hand foot and mouth?

OP posts:
SoyDora · 12/09/2018 20:16

It’s viral like chicken pox, so caught in the same way as chicken pox really. DD1 had it at 11 months (caught from a baby group). DD2 had it at 7 months, caught from a friend’s child.

DoILookArsed · 12/09/2018 20:18

Oh god. How do you tell the difference? I'm assuming chicken pox is all over the body?

OP posts:
Quartz2208 · 12/09/2018 20:21

Basically location of sports is the main one - Hand foot and mouth will be on the soles of feet and palms of hands - chicken pox will never be there.

Chicken pox will be on the torso as the main starting point.

The main difference is quarantine period - HFM is contagious for up to 6 weeks after you are ill so you are not quarantined at all!

SoyDora · 12/09/2018 20:22

Chicken pox tends to be all over the body and the spots are quite distinctive (with a blistered head that scabs over after a few days).
HF&M tends to be around and inside the mouth, and on hands and feet as the name suggests but can also be on the trunk and limbs, and around the nappy area. I have to say the ones on the picture look more like HF&M than chicken pox to me. Mine were really miserable with HF&M (high temp, loss of appetite).
As a PP says, if it’s chicken pox he will probably wake up covered in blistered spots.

SpaSushi · 12/09/2018 20:23

Another vote for HF&M . Chicken pox look like little bubbles when they first appear

DoILookArsed · 12/09/2018 20:28

He's got nothing on his hands or feet. He's got some on his torso and back

OP posts:
SoyDora · 12/09/2018 20:30

You’ll probably have a clearer idea tomorrow. IME chicken pox are definite blisters.

SpaSushi · 12/09/2018 20:39

My child had this and had nothing on hands feet either. It's the clustering around mouth , and inside mouth

PenApple · 12/09/2018 20:42

Oh my ds (13mo) is just getting over HFM! I thought it was chicken pox at first. He had to see a doctor to confirm what it was for the safety of an immunosuppressed child on a heavy dose of steroids that we’d been in contact with before spots came out so it was confirmed HFM (as best as he could just using visualisation).

He started very poorly for 2 days, then spots randomly on chin & arms, legs. By the end of the first day he had spots every where, but most were small pink ones, some were big blisters. Worst area by far was nappy area .Here’s some photos...

Dr said big spots were too concentrated to be CP.

DoILookArsed · 12/09/2018 20:54

Hmm looks sore

I agree looks like Hand Foot and Mouth. Take him to GP first thing in the morning, as it can get nasty if not treated quickly and correctly.

maxiflump1 · 12/09/2018 22:11

Looks like hand foot and mouth to me. It's easily passed between little ones as it's very contagious.

DoILookArsed · 12/09/2018 22:30

oh shit. I'm trying to keep his temp down with Calpol, a fan and fluids

OP posts:
SendYouUpInFlames · 12/09/2018 23:54

Whats his temp OP?

DoILookArsed · 13/09/2018 00:01

down to 37 with calpol

OP posts:
PenApple · 13/09/2018 07:03

You can’t treat it so don’t worry about GP unless he gets very poorly obviously (NHS site will have good info). Once mine came out in spots his temp dropped from nearly 41 to 38 then completely normal within a day. He has blisters on tongue so off food was but drinking ok thankfully - that seems to be dr’s main concern, I was told little or no wet nappies in 8 hours then up to hospital.

SoyDora · 13/09/2018 07:06

Yes it’s viral so can’t be treated. Mine ate nothing but yoghurt for about a week! Plenty of fluids and whatever food he will tolerate.

DoILookArsed · 13/09/2018 08:45

Today's offering. There are spots in the creases of his arms and legs too. Some.on torso. None on soles or palms

Is this chicken pox?
OP posts:
PenApple · 13/09/2018 09:49

Really sounds like HFM, chicken pox would be whole face. Mine has them in creases too.

Pharmacy said piriton & calpol are best. Plus piriton helped him sleep better Grin. I couldn’t find a definite isolation period though, seems the advice is they don’t have to b crusted over, just when child is feeling well again.

Hope he’s not feeling too rubish at the moment! At his worse I nearly had ds up at A&E.

DoILookArsed · 13/09/2018 10:05
