How do I stop the shower curtain going mouldy?

ShowerOfMonsters · 12/09/2018 10:30

Shower curtain seems to get mouldy quicker each time I clean it!
Just put up a new one. DH always pushes it back to let the shower walls dry, but this means the curtain doesn't dry as well.
How often should I wash it? Replace it? How can I keep it mould free as long as possible?

Wash it and dry it every few days. Or get a shower screen, they are better really.

scaryteacher · 12/09/2018 10:35

I spray mine with Waitrose shower spray and have it spread out to dry. If you spray the walls with the shower spray as well it helps.

Fill bath with hot water and bleach. Shove curtain in there. Leave.

I spray mine with Astonish mould and mildew blaster (from Poundland) a couple times a week, while it's still hanging up, let it sit for a bit, then rinse off with hot water from the shower. Leave curtain opened up to dry.

A580Hojas · 12/09/2018 11:01

I wash mine about once a month, if that. It never gets mouldy. I wouldn't be spraying anti mildew spray with gay abandon. That stuff is horrifically toxic!

Ask your dh to leave the curtain open?

BertieBotts · 12/09/2018 11:13

Better ventilation in your bathroom helps, too. If nothing to improve leave the door open.

SilverHairedCat · 12/09/2018 11:15

Leave it swinging free. Works for a lot of things....

Also spray with poundshop mould and mildew spray now and again. Works a treat.

I stick mine in the washing machine on a hot wash. I find I have to do it every week otherwise I get mould in the stitching at the bottom.

I have wondered whether washing it makes it less waterproof though.

kaytee87 · 12/09/2018 11:58

Throw it in the bin and get a screen.

🤷🏼‍♀️ sorry. I hate shower curtains.

BinkyandBunty · 12/09/2018 12:01

I bought a dark grey one. Hides a multitude of sins.

It goes in the washing machine every now and again too.

CramptonHodnet · 12/09/2018 12:02

Soak in a bucket with warm water and bleach and then give it a good wash and hang back up, spreading out to dry thoroughly.

I also hate shower curtains, for that reason. Eventually you have to throw them away because they just look disgusting.

tiddlyipom · 12/09/2018 12:08

When I had a shower curtain I used Milton's fluid diluted with water, just sprayed it on after using the shower.

BlackInk · 12/09/2018 12:09

We just pop ours in the wash every few weeks and it seems fine - it's white so it goes in with DC's school shirts on a hottish wash as these are the only white things we own :)

tiddlyipom · 12/09/2018 12:11

Just remembered, I use a squeegy thing to wipe the water off the tiles too.

ShowerOfMonsters · 12/09/2018 12:12

We live in a hard water area so I'm not sure a screen is the answer. Our last one was awful to clean, it was badly designed though.
Ventilation no option to change. It's in an internal room, extractor fan, no windows. Wooden ceiling rough plaster walls Hmm I hate it! The door is always open.

I always put it in the bath in a bucket of bleach then rinse then machine at 60. It's the stitching at the bottom that never seems to get clean properly. Maybe it's just had it's life then, it's had 4 years daily use, before that was rarely used.

You're doing well to get 4 years out of a shower curtain Shock

ShowerOfMonsters · 13/09/2018 18:58

Grin I suppose I assumed it would dissolve from over -bleaching before I had to throw it! It has been consigned to the bin and we have a sparkly new shower curtain!

I just get a new one every few weeks, they never come clean in the washer and nothing gets the mould off. I use one from Asda £2 and just replace it often

Terramirabilis · 13/09/2018 21:50

Buy a mound-resistant one. Always pull it across when you get out of the shower so as to let it air dry.

Terramirabilis · 13/09/2018 21:51

Mound was meant to be mould. US spellcheck didn't like it.

BlackInk · 14/09/2018 10:22

You get a new one every few weeks GeoffCapesInSlingbacks Shock... do you not worry about the waste/environmental impact? What kind of mould are you growing in your bathroom that doesn't wash off?

Greenglassteacup · 14/09/2018 10:25

I wouldn’t get a glass shower screen. Ours spontaneously exploded during the night. Sounded like a bomb going off, frightened the life out of us. Thank goodness our daughter or anyone else hadn’t been in the room at the time. Glass everywhere. Chunks taken out of the bath & the wall with the force of the explosion. We have a shower curtain now.

CramptonHodnet · 14/09/2018 11:02

That's awful, Greenglass. I had no idea they could do that. We had a bathroom lightfitting explode, scattering shards of hot glass everywhere, whilst DD was in the shower. Glad she wasn't in the bath at the time, otherwise she would have been badly injured. That was frightening.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/09/2018 11:23

I put mine in the wash every couple of weeks.
My MIl on the other hand, wiped the courtain dry on both sides with two little towels every time the shower was used. It never got mouldy.
