Does teen get to choose about this?

Quick one as I'm at work Smile

DS 13 doesn't have a school jumper for the winter, I said he has to have one. He said if I buy him one he won't wear it. I say keep it in your bag so it's there if you need it, he said no I don't want one and I'm not wearing one.

Do I get him a jumper or not? He's refusing long sleeved shirts too so we are talking a short sleeved shirt, his blazer and a winter coat when it gets colder. It's just going to go unworn but I feel shitty about him not having one!

Don't bother buying one!! My DS was exactly the same and didn't wear a jumper once through yrs 7-9. Travelled to school on train then walking through all weathers in a shirt and blazer.

This year (10) he's asked if he can get one!

Iruka · 10/09/2018 12:45

I never wore a jumper at school. I still don't like them. My mum stopped buying them in the end

petitdonkey · 10/09/2018 12:47

And you'll be lucky to get the coat on him!! DS only conceded a thin Uniqlo down jacket during the snow last year! I genuinely think they don't feel the cold.

I nagged and nagged but it just wore us both out!

TheFaerieQueene · 10/09/2018 12:49

Don’t waste your money. My dS used to walk to the train station in the bitterest winter snow with a shirt and blazer - no option on that. He wouldn’t wear a jumper or coat.
He is 27 now and wears weather appropriate clothing. Teens are just weird when it comes to clothing.

InDubiousBattle · 10/09/2018 12:51

My nephews would go blue with cold before putting on a jumper at this age. Save your cash.

RedSkyLastNight · 10/09/2018 12:51

What's the point of buying a jumper he's told you he won't wear?
If he's wearing a winter coat, that's a layer more than most of the secondary school children round here do.
DS would happily not wear the blazer actually and just wander round in a short sleeved shirt ...

SoyDora · 10/09/2018 12:52

If he’s wearing a t-shirt, blazer and winter coat I’m sure he’ll survive!

Meet0nTheIedge · 10/09/2018 12:52

Mine doesn't wear blazer or jumper apart from school photo day (they aren't compulsory at his school) and only wears a fairly thin coat in winter and has to be nagged to even take that unless the temp is below zero. We have a jumper from the second hand uniform shop for photo day.

MrsMozart · 10/09/2018 12:53

Either save your money, or buy one and it can live in his frawer just in case he changes his mind.

I definitely wouldn't waste the breath telling him to wear one.

ErictheGuineaPig · 10/09/2018 12:54

God, yeah just let him choose! Shirt plus blazer - even a short sleeved shirt sounds like it would be warm enough for a school classroom. They can get quite stuffy. It's not like you can force him to wear a jumper is it? Main thing is he knows you'll get one if asks.

rainingcatsanddog · 10/09/2018 12:55

He's wearing a jacket which is more than what my son wore at 13. (Gloves were his only concession to ice) Don't buy it. Just wait a few years until he's more sensible and wants to be warm.

LusaCole · 10/09/2018 12:56

Yes, teen gets to choose this Smile

EvaHarknessRose · 10/09/2018 12:56

My girls wear theirs only in the depths of winter, a boy wearing one is a rare sighting indeed.

AlexanderHamilton · 10/09/2018 12:57

Ds hates the feel of a jumper. He refuses to wear one & it’s warm inside schools anyway.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 10/09/2018 12:58

DS's school jumper is grey so I got him a plain (cheap) grey hoodie to wear under his blazer 'til he got to school. That was deemed acceptable when it was very cold. Coat? No chance!

ArtemisWeatherwax · 10/09/2018 13:01

DS was the same. I put one in his wardrobe. It took until a really cold snap for him to break it out and once on, it stayed on until May.

Same with a coat/umbrella. I made them available - that's my part done. If they ever whinge about being cold and/or wet I point out that's their choice and when it gets to be -5 degC/hurricane weather then I do the I Told You So dance in the other room Grin

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/09/2018 13:07

Most schools have crap hearing and he will be either boiling or freezing in winter. Jumpers are not the done thing in either situation

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/09/2018 13:08

Obviously heating

AintNoCista · 10/09/2018 13:29

Mine said the same, I bought him a £3 Asda one that he keeps on his locker. It stops any neglectful parent feelings about it as he has the choice not to freeze, if he chooses to freeze then that's his own issue

Oddcat · 10/09/2018 13:32

My DD would come home shivering and still refuse to wear a jumper . Teens are weird .

TeeBee · 10/09/2018 13:32

As a person who has just got rid of two totally unworn school jumpers...save your money. He's a teenager. If he's cold, he'll find a way to stay warm. They're not stupid.

ThereIsIron · 10/09/2018 13:39

He doesn't want nor need a jumper

AintNoCista · 10/09/2018 13:47

They're not stupid.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with this. Ds1 would turn blue and insist he didn't need a coat. It's like those men who wear shorts and flip flops when it's -3 outside Confused

Babyroobs · 10/09/2018 13:51

None of my four teenagers have ever had a jumper, I know they wouldn't wear them.

TeeBee · 10/09/2018 13:52

AintNoCista...but they're still alive, right? :-D
