School day breakfasts

My son started school last week. He was previously in nursery where it didn't matter too much if he didn't eat breakfast/had a small breakfast (few bites or mouthfuls) as they had a snack at 9am.

He is pretty much a none breakfast person and it can be hit and miss as to whether he will have anything.

At school he doesn't have a snack (as far as I'm aware) so lunch is at 11.45.

Any sure fire ways to get him to eat something? I even caved this morning and he had 2 sausage rolls for breakfast 🙈

Scrambled egg wrap. Scramble the egg in the microwave with a little milk and cheese. Put it in a wrap with ketchup. Tesco do smaller wholemeal wraps in there Mexican food bit

Could you get him up a bit earlier so he feels more like eating something?

If he’s not mentioning that he’s hungry at school in the mornings, then maybe what he is eating is enough for him.

If it’s breakfast type foods he isn’t interested in, there is nothing wrong with him having lunch type foods for breakfast instead.

our ks1 classes give them a snack of fruit and milk if they want so he may be getting a snack mid morning.

Ours are given fruit and milk mid morning too.
DD has porridge, scrambled eggs on toast, shreddies, pancakes, toast or Greek yoghurt and fruit.

Nutella on wholemeal toast with sliced banana?
Would the lure of the chocolate encourage him to eat maybe?
It’s not ideal I suppose but it’s better than having nothing inside him all morning, plus the wholemeal bread and banana are ok nutritionally.
It always worked for DS!

Most schools have snack around 10am. Regardless a breakfast is always the best option.
Fruit, yogurt, porridge, overnight oats, cereal, toast and peanut butter with banana are staples in our house.

He only went in for a few hours on Friday so I've no idea what they do. I know they have milk in the morning. He's a buggar for eggs so I'll try some scrambled eggs in the morning. Have also bought him some of those Kellogg's variety boxes. I won't feel as bothered if they have a mid morning snack. He'd happily have fruit later on

A sausage roll for breakfast is fine.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2018 17:19

If they dont provide a snack then you can always send one in

AamdC · 09/09/2018 17:23

If he likes eggs what about an omelette?they are quick and easy

summerlovingliz · 09/09/2018 17:24

Mine love any bread based.. crumpets, pancakes, hot cross bun, yoghurts perhaps

PhilomenaButterfly · 09/09/2018 17:26

We have chocolate pancakes and Incredibles 2 cereal. I don't care what they eat, as long as they eat, especially as DD doesn't eat the fruit unless it's apple.

I don't know a school which will let a child eat a snack though unless they have a medical reason or its specific snack time.

youarenotkiddingme · 09/09/2018 17:39

Cereal bar he can eat on the way there?

cjt110 · 09/09/2018 17:46

I think tomorrow I'll get him involved instead of just asking him and dishing up. He gets up around 630.

I'm taking about sending a snack for eating at break time, not during the class!

Starlight345 · 09/09/2018 17:51

Just to say quietly on mn. My Ds is not a breakfast person but ate chocolate squares cereal for breakfast for years because that’s all he would eat . I considered it better than nothing . He ate well the rest of the day so it worked for us.

Sandstormbrewing · 09/09/2018 17:56

dementedpixie unless it's specific snack time they often won't let kids eat at break either. Not in primary anyway. I wasn't suggesting you thought they'd let him eat in class!

TheOnlyLivingMumInNewCross · 09/09/2018 17:59

If he likes sausages, you could always three quarter cook some the night before and then finish them off quickly in the morning for a sausage sandwich or wrap?
My DS used to be like this until he discovered crumpets.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2018 18:00

Well I've always provided a snack for my dc to eat at break time. Why would they not allow it?

cjt110 · 09/09/2018 18:03

It's all so new. I haven't seen anything about snacks either provided by school or that we can send in.

OP posts:
SoyDora · 09/09/2018 18:11

Ask about snacks. It says in the literature we received that we don’t need to send a snack as they provide fruit at morning break. If they didn’t provide it then I’d send something.

Sandstormbrewing · 09/09/2018 18:11

cjt110 the school will tell you if they can take a snack. DH has worked in several and some had designated snack time, with fruit provided by school but most have been food at lunch only so I'd try and get him to eat in the morning.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2018 18:14

I have never heard of schools not allowing food at break whether provided by the school or by the parent

SoyDora · 09/09/2018 18:15

^ me either. All the schools I know of (and I have lots of friends with DC at lots of different schools) have either provided fruit at break time or the parents send a snack (usually fruit/raisins etc)
