September. I knew it was coming of course. Just finding it hard at the moment.

It has been a wonderful Summer. Just like the last, all here together again and lots of time in the garden chattering away. The weather has been blooming brilliant of course and that helps. But Summer is over. They needed to get back and I guess they chose just to go.

I miss them. That's all.

This is great Saggital, I really enjoyed reading your very descriptive posts,, and I am reading an old D.H.Lawrence story at the moment, who could brilliantly write about the countryside ways.

Mumsnet has a 'fun and games' section? And I'm I it???

This has put me right off 'chat' and back to aibu - is that in the vipers and bitches section?

TemptressofWaikiki · 10/09/2018 18:25

Gods sake..

onefootinthegrave · 10/09/2018 18:34

I wish seagull that's found it's way to Cricklewood would fuck off back to the seaside. It's noise is driving me even more bonkers than the OP sounds.

madeoficecream · 10/09/2018 18:48

It makes me excited when I see them leaving... Cant think what im excited about... 12 foot of snow, the plants dying, arguments with my husband about leaving the heating on over night?
None the less though, it does give me a weird thrill to see them crowd the sky.

House martens.

zwellers · 10/09/2018 19:24

Marvelousways it depends on the geese species. Brent, barnacle, pink foot and white fronted geese will just be starting to arrive from the Arctic. . However Canada geese will also be on the move. They have a moult migration and sometimes they just get a bit confused as thier instincts are telling them they need to migrate.

Happypuppy · 10/09/2018 19:30

Awww the Phoebe story is 😍😍😍

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/09/2018 19:37

Obvs Blush from moi!

stripeswitheverything · 10/09/2018 20:09

I wonder where they are now.

marvelousways · 10/09/2018 20:10

thanks zwellers further googling would lead me to think they are most likely Canada geese . We have a few lakes nearby where they live I think. So now I have no idea where they are off to. Could they be just returning form their moult migration? (we are in Yorkshire, googling suggests they may have gone to Scotland for the summer!)
I feel so cheated! I have always said goodbye to them as they fly overhead in the autumn, and been so happy to see them "returning" in the Spring!!

heartsease68 · 10/09/2018 20:24

This is just like a Joanna Trollope novel.

Don't stop now :)

Saggital · 10/09/2018 20:32

Well I slept in. With the birds gone I never awoke. So I missed my train and as there is only one a day I had to go back to bed.

At 11.03 am, or thereabouts, I got up. I noticed many gold finches splashing in the birdbath. Now I feel not so alone. I may pour some bubble bath in tomorrow so they can have some fun.

Swallows are more sophisticated. They are in Spain now for the evening, Morrocco tomorrow night, then The Gambia, Senegal before finally settling in mid Africa for their long winter break before the week is out. I was reflecting on goldfinches this afternoon. I have only ever seen them here, in Redditch and a long time ago in Skegness. Although lovely birds they just don not seem to have the drive and ambition that swallows have.

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2018 20:37

Lazy bastard goldfinches but bubblebath??

AndromedaPerseus · 10/09/2018 20:39

The ducks, grebes and moorhens have had several broods due to the good summer and the first lots are now all grown up

Saggital · 10/09/2018 20:39

Well, I could make it gin. Gin or bubblebath. Or both I suppose. Goldfinches never strike me as birds who like a tipple. Geese, now they love vodka.

I am reading all your posts in Mary off Corrie's voice Saggital

zwellers · 10/09/2018 20:45

Marvelousways given your location would say yes it's geese returing from moult migration plus this year's goslings will have just figured out this flying lark and make exploratory flights. In spring though you could be seeing geese heading arctic bound.

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/09/2018 20:51

We have loads of little birds in our garden ( rural , Wales )
I saw a wren today , it was so small I thought it was a butterfly to begin with
Had about 3 nests of sparrows , blue tits and one nest of bullfinches , they are an amazing pink on the breast
We have had crows nesting in the roof , am very glad they’ve gone and hope they won’t come back

RebeccaCloud9 · 10/09/2018 20:55

Wrens are apparently the most common bird in the UK. I cannot get over that fact.

We have house martens. When we moved in, I just saw all the shit and wanted them gone. Now I love love love them.

@Charolais your tale is like a folk/bedtime story, similar to the happy Prince or the selfish giant. Beautiful and lovely and sad.

Mrsmadevans · 10/09/2018 21:01

My Great Neice lives in Redditch, she is the SMUG yummy mummy with a boring hubby and 2 DC who are anything but Darlings , give me my birds and Hedgies any day.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 10/09/2018 22:29

We have some birds nesting on the side of our house, right at the top of the apex under the eves. Not sure what they are though they swoop through the sky. I think they might be Swifts, but I’m not sure. I was out gardening today and heard chattering from the nest so they must be still in there, maybe a second brood.

We have a hedgehog too, I don’t see it very often, but it does leave little deposits on the grass and the path, so I know s/he’s still around!
