Huawei phones - why do we keep being offered them on contract!

So twice now I've gone to upgrade and each time we've had the push to this brand. Are they new and giving incentives to retailers?

It's definitely pronounced Wah-way.

I had one, but the model I had couldn't make full use of microSD storage for some reason. It was infuriating as most things needed to be saved to phone memory, which got eaten up very quickly.

Apart from that, I loved mine, but I have the Google Pixel 2 now and I love that more. I seriously considered the Huawei P20, and I would get a Huawei again.

Upsy1981 · 07/09/2018 20:52

DH, DD and I all have Huaweis and love them. DH is on his second because he liked the first one so much, he got another when he upgraded.

Blinkingblimey · 07/09/2018 20:52

Sorry 😳 it’s ‘who are we’!

Blinkingblimey · 07/09/2018 20:56

Ok, I stand corrected - the actual Chinese pronounciation is as Bee says..... but UK industry generally start with a ‘who’ at the front. But let’s face it - all that really matters are that they are decent phones.

I switched to a p20 pro after 8 years of iphones and won't go back now. So much cheaper and mostly better. Camera is awesome and I'm a semi professional photographer. I do find the Fitbit app is poor to sync compared to the iPhone but literally my only gripe

Prometheus · 07/09/2018 21:02

As they have a de facto monopoly of phones in China, they actually sell more phones worldwide than Apple (according to an article in The Times recently). Apparently the camera on the phones is miles better than other brands.

W0rriedMum · 07/09/2018 21:03

The honor 9 is brilliant.

I was told that the Americans say not to use it if in the military because of interference from the Chinese government. But I have no secrets Wink

Livinglavidal0ca · 07/09/2018 21:03

Just switched to a p20 pro after my iPhones. LOVE IT. much better value, super cheap to fix rather than apple wanting your first born child just to fix the screen. Camera is amazing, battery life is brilliant and the sound quality is second to none. Screen is so clear and its really nice to hold too. I pay £21 a month for the phone and £24 for the airtime. It's a 24 month contract however the phone will be paid off before then so the contract reduces. They're so customisabe too.

BarryTheKestrel · 07/09/2018 21:12

I have a p20 pro and absolutely love it. DH has a s9 and wants to swap with me. My DM recently upgraded from IPhone to the p20 as well. We are all converts!

SouthWestmom · 07/09/2018 21:16

Good god I've come back to huawei love in!

Ok so one answer to my question and a load of persuasion! Interesting, will have to take another look.

Pronounciation = who are way
I know this a rhotic/non rhotic issue, but seriously? There's definitely no 'r' sound in Huawei!

Wha-way.

jasjas1973 · 07/09/2018 21:42

Can they be trusted though? FBI and CIA say there are doubts, obv not conversation, speech is over a western network and if they ar above board now, can anyone be sure that will always be the case?

Same as Russia's Kaspersky, no longer used in most secure networks.

Given how both Russia and China behave, i would not purchase either one.

Justmuddlingalong · 07/09/2018 21:44

I've got a Huawei phone and a Huawei tablet. Zero complaints from me. I would definitely recommend them.

FrankiesKnuckle · 07/09/2018 21:49

After having iPhones from day dot, how is the switch to an Android phone?
I am seriously considering the new huawei but need the final bit of convincing.

safariboot · 07/09/2018 21:51

They're cheaper for a given performance point I think. I don't know too much about them. For Android there's loads of manufacturers. I like Moto in the budget to mid range but I don't think their "flagships" are the best.

RavenWings · 07/09/2018 21:52

The huawei is great, I have one. Will definitely either get another or make the jump to one plus.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 07/09/2018 21:54

@FrankiesKnuckle I was the same, Apple practically owned my soul. Got a Huawei and I'd never go back....

Troels · 07/09/2018 22:02

My sis is on her second she upgraded over the summer, she loves it. I played with it a bit while visiting her and it was nice and easy to use, I have iPhone5 but will consider this when we upgrade.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 07/09/2018 22:57

I've got a P10, fantastic kit. Huge processor grunt for gaming, metal case dissipates heat, screen is really sharp, and the cameras (dual Leicas, one for monochrome) are incredible.

Justgivemesomepeace · 07/09/2018 23:04

They push them because they can get you cheaper deal than samsung/iPhone. They have brilliant spec for lower price so they're great to sell to customers who are more open minded about what manufacturer they'll consider. Lots of the staff have probably got them too Wink
Switching from Apple to android and vice versa is dead easy. Don't let that put you off considering it.

marvelousways · 08/09/2018 11:01

my dsis had a lot of trouble with syncing her fitbit with her hauwei phone (p10 mate) and on researching and posting on fitbit forums it seems to be a common problem. If you check the list of compatible phones that fitbit put out a lot of huawei phones are not on it. It is something to do with how the bluetooth works on the hauwei phones I believe.
It may well be fine with a lot of the more recent/high end hauwei phones, but I couldn't be sure and just decided not to risk it cause I use my fitbit a lot!

amusedbush · 08/09/2018 11:10

It’s definitely pronounced wah-way.

My soul belongs to Apple but my friend has a Huawei and loves it. They have great cameras.

Allthepinkunicorns · 08/09/2018 11:17

I love my Huawei phone. My dh works in the mobile phone business and says they are the best phones on the market and far cheaper than iPhone etc.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 08/09/2018 11:21

fitbit won't synch on my Honor 9, other than that it's a fantastic phone

ihatethecold · 09/09/2018 08:06

I’m fed up with Apple but I do love my laptop.
Would an android link to my Mac book as easily as my iPhone?
