Stupid idea....covering the washing line?

I was rescuing the washing from a sudden deluge this afternoon (and wasn't quick enough, they were nearly soaked again) and thinking how great it was during the heatwave that you could put endless washing out and it would be dry in no time...and was musing on how to keep on top of it during the winter.
I have a large family so lots of washing, but I hate using the dryer all the time, and I live in a very rainy place. I suddenly thought of putting up like a gazebo/ garden tent thing over the washing line, then you could put washing outside and not bother about the rain?

Is it a stupid idea? Anyone tried similar? Any other ideas?

This type of idea?

PoptartPoptart · 05/09/2018 23:01

But it’s the warm air that actually dries the clothes isn’t it?
I can’t imagine clothing drying in very cold weather, regardless of whether it was covered from rain.

Bloodybridget · 05/09/2018 23:02

Well, you can buy covers for rotary airers, so I don't think it's a stupid idea. But would your washing get dry if it was outside on a damp, rainy day?

I do it all the time in the summer. Just don't overload the line

superram · 05/09/2018 23:03

If there is a breeze it will dry, takes longer obviously but evaporation will occur.

Knittedfairies · 05/09/2018 23:04

Like this?

QOD · 05/09/2018 23:04

You’ve just reminded me that for years I had a patio umbrella taped to my whirly gig! Twas fab. Kept the rain off and also stopped sun fade
Can’t believe I’ve just forgotten to do it the last 3 or so summers

ivykaty44 · 05/09/2018 23:05

Wind in winter also drys washing

mammynowanauntyIRL · 05/09/2018 23:06

Real thing in Ireland

There's other ones too, it's the wind blowing through that dries them in poorer weather.

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 05/09/2018 23:07

I don't have a rotary thing, I was thinking the same idea but over my washing lines (I have 4 criss crossing the side of my garden) so like a...you know the tent jobbies people put outside for parties? That kind of thing.

Warm air helps massively but I think even on colder days it will dry if its kept out of the rain? I don't know. It's not horribly cold most of the winter, lots of wind and rain but not freezing.

The rotair is brilliant for clothes drying.

It’s also brilliant for turning your washing line into a giant kite in a strong breeze and you can play hide and seek with it and several of your neighbours. Grin

I’m very jealous of my mum’s setup. She has a big barn open at one end so she has stuck a couple of lines up in it and her washing dries there all winter.

OP gazebos are notorious for visiting neighbours when the wind gets up a bit Wink so you might find yourself having to put it away all the time.

Moonflower12 · 05/09/2018 23:14

My neighbour has a gazebo up and she puts all her washing underneath using airers. The sort you normally have in the house.

buckeejit · 05/09/2018 23:14

Lots of folk round here have a line on their garage & leave the garage door open. I like a covered path with line between house and garage. Or I would if I had a garage....

PoptartPoptart · 05/09/2018 23:19

But if it was raining and a bit windy, surely the clothes would still get wet, even under a gazebo?
Rain doesn’t always fall straight down, it often comes down at an angle due to gusts of wind?
Even that Rotaire (linked up thread) wouldn’t help as the sides are just mesh. It wouldn’t stop rain being blown by the wind.

I’m in Wales. That Rotaire is a bloody miracle.

It would be quite sheltered by the house on 2 sides and the shed on the other, but I could always try a gazebo yoke with sides like this?

but then you wouldn't get the wind

I have a line under a covered porch and put washing out all year. It doesn't get completely dry in winter so I finish it off inside but it smells much nicer

bookbuddy · 05/09/2018 23:35

I put mine on airers under the gazebo it’s mostly fine but if it’s a still, rainy day it does take a while to dry I usually end up tumbling it for 20-30mins when it’s bought in. It still saves electric though.

demonbubblewrapper · 05/09/2018 23:40

My friend's mum hangs her washing on a line under her carport.

witwootoodleoo · 05/09/2018 23:45

My Mum's washing line is undercover and dries washing all year round. It is ace. It is basically just a wooden frame with four posts holding it up and plastic above. Looks better than it sounds and means they don't need a tumble dryer. In winter sometimes things need half an hour on the radiator to finish off but they're more cold than damp. Windy days are good drying days even when it rains.

Dowser · 05/09/2018 23:51

Think it’s a great idea
Mum had a covered over walkway to her back garden
Dad covered it with overhead plastic sheeting
Washing dried in no time

Junglefowl · 05/09/2018 23:52

We used to balance an umbrella over our washing on a drying rack! It sometimes blew off so probably should have weighted the handle! .

i now time our washes for dry days but it’s much easier as have so much dry weather here.
