School uniforms - do your kids change when they get home?

Just as the title suggests really. In my head, DS should change out of his uniform when he gets home into normal clothes so as to protect his uniform and also, to differentiate between school and home time.

In the past I've seen kids in their uniforms quite late in the day - say 5/6pm and wonder if they have been at a school club or otherwise or do they just stay in their uniforms til bedtime.

Ds either stays in his uniform or strips down to just his underwear!

Don’t bother with clean clothes unless doing someone “special”

kitbabingley · 05/09/2018 14:06

Yes mine do. Into pjs or underwear unless we are going out or have someone coming round.

BillywigSting · 05/09/2018 14:07

Ds changes because his uniform is usually filthy by the time he comes home (reception) and I don't like staying in dirty clothes so wouldn't make my child do the same.

But then dp and I both get changed when we come home from work too

We don’t, their school clothes aren’t particularly expensive though. I put an apron on the smallest if dinner has sauce!

Silentnighttwo · 05/09/2018 14:08

DS (Y1) usually stays in his until bedtime (unless it’s really dirty).

ParklifePoser · 05/09/2018 14:08

Mine are a mix. 1 changes 2 don't. I let them chose, Although I do ask they take off blazers, ties and shoes. If they were doing something particularly messy or were going out they would fully change.

ShesABelter · 05/09/2018 14:10

My youngest two do. They are usually manky, covered in paint, the or lunch etc so I stick them straight in the wash.

My 13 year old doesn't tend to unless asked but she wears a clean uniform each day anyway and her clothes aren't covered in anything so I'm not bothered about her keeping them on.

neversleepagain · 05/09/2018 14:12

Both mine change and wash hands as soon as they get in. Their uniform is more often clean than not and can be re worn the next day.

Plus they have lots of lovely clothes that will never be worn otherwise.

AdventuresRUs · 05/09/2018 14:14

No most infant kida here dont change out of uniform. Its not uncomfortable though- polo shirt.

More likely to change if they have a club - rainbows/swimming etc.

Id let mine if they wanted to but tbh their home clothes are probbaly more expensive than school.clothes (2-4pound an item at supermarketa) and I make sure I have enough for a set everyday if needed.

AdventuresRUs · 05/09/2018 14:15

I dont let them rewear polo shirts or shirts though. I thought everyone did this until I read a recent thread.

Id not be happy with pjs at 3.30 either!

SoyDora · 05/09/2018 14:15

Ive been thinking about this as DD1 has just started school. She does after school activities 2 nights a week so changes for these. The other three.nights I don’t see the point... she’s come home most days with paint or something down her so the uniform won’t do another day, and if she gets changed (and likely gets dinner or something down her) that will just mean I have more washing. So she’s been staying as she is.

SoyDora · 05/09/2018 14:16

We have a clean set of school clothes for every day.

cjt110 · 05/09/2018 14:26

OK cool. I can imagine my DS being the same as yours Sirzy He starts on Friday and I had to convince him last night that his teachers (at the home visit this morning) would want to see him dressed and not naked as the day he was born....!

I know it doesn't really matter what we do - no one else would really care - but I wondered what others do. I get changed as soon as I get home into comfier clothes - pj bottoms/slouchy bottoms and a top whereas my DH will often stay in his work uniform (which to me is strange). I suppose it's just how we were brought up. I was brought up to change out of my uniform when I got home.

I think when a lot of us were young uniform was quite expensive (not sold in supermarkets) and people couldnt afford several clean sets, hence changing into different clothes to keep uniform "clean."

I dont really like them rewearing uniform such as polo tops or shirts and in infants she often got pinafore and cardi a little mucky too - would far rather they have clean on. Less need to change out of them to "keep for best.".

SoyDora · 05/09/2018 14:37

Yes I definitely didn’t have a set for every day like DD does when I was young, so I got changed straight away to keep it as clean as possible.

weegiemum · 05/09/2018 14:41

Mine do change - dd2 (14) into pjs almost every day which she then has to change into something else to walk the dog then back into jammies, it's a real palaver! Ds (16) gets into shorts, unless he's off for a run when he wears joggies - no I don't get it either. Dd1 is just about to start art school and if the last year is anything to go by she'll be more coveted in paint and ink than your average reception child. She has painty clothes and overalls, so always gets changed if she's wearing them!

sausagerole · 05/09/2018 14:42

I'd love them too but in the spirit of picking my battles I just let them wear uniform. If it's got food down then I'll get them to change their t-shirt,but they've got LOADS of uniform that we've been given so no need to keep it clean for the next day. Also, they might as well wear stuff that's pretty dirty rather than put a clean shirt on only to wash it two hours later!

ParkheadParadise · 05/09/2018 14:48

We always had to change. My mum had 6 of us. We were not aloud out to play until we were changed.
I was the same with Dd1.

Andro · 05/09/2018 14:51

They certainly do! I think it helps that they see me and DH do the same, but it's always been expected that they get changed.

Fatted · 05/09/2018 14:54

I have a set for each DS for each day of the week. So don't care if they get it dirty. DS2 only does a half day at nursery and I'll change him if he makes a mess with his lunch. Generally when DS1 gets home I don't bother changing him unless he asks to. Or if his uniform is filthy.

PaddysMarket · 05/09/2018 14:58

Mine do (age 5 & 6), as soon as we get in we go right up stairs to change. If I didn't have 2 large heavy shedding dogs I'd probably let them laze around for a bit but I don't want the uniforms covered in hair. Tho my standards might slip as the year goes on, right now we are only at week 3 so still fresh and sticking to rountine.

CuntyMcFuckerson · 05/09/2018 15:03

Mine change. The 10 year old wouldn't if I didn't insist.

They just put on pyjamas or joggy bottoms (teen) if we aren't going back out. It's just comfier to change - I don't think you can have a proper sprawl on the sofa in school trousers!

AdoraBell · 05/09/2018 15:04

Yes. DH was aghast at having to buy non uniform clothes until I asked him why he changed out of his suit when he gets home.

cjt110 · 05/09/2018 15:07

Our son's poloshirt and jumper are both embroided and not supermarket tops - silly prices too... :-(

TeenTimesTwo · 05/09/2018 15:16

My DDs always changed when they were at primary (before puberty hit) and uniform lasted all week.

Now at secondary I'm a bit happier to leave on longer as DD needs a clean shirt each day anyway. However it needs to be changed before evening meal as otherwise tie goes everywhere and ketchup stains white shirts.

OP - does your PTA do second hand uniform sales?
