School uniforms - do your kids change when they get home?

Just as the title suggests really. In my head, DS should change out of his uniform when he gets home into normal clothes so as to protect his uniform and also, to differentiate between school and home time.

In the past I've seen kids in their uniforms quite late in the day - say 5/6pm and wonder if they have been at a school club or otherwise or do they just stay in their uniforms til bedtime.

Mine didn't at primary because I could chuck his sweatshirts into the wash easily enough. Now he's started secondary he has pricey jumpers that are more delicate and non-tumble-dryable, so I've imposed a rule that he has to change as soon as he comes in. It was his first day yesterday and he walked in, looked me dead in the eye and stripped in the kitchen Grin

'Normal' uniforms now are easy to wash and cheap for primary children (polo shirts and trousers/skirts from supermarkets). So I don't really see the point in changing.

When I was at school my uniform was very expensive and hard to wash (thick kilt and proper long sleeved shirts in a strange colour available only from the uniform shop, and expensive school wool logo jumpers) - so I was made to get changed!

It was his first day yesterday and he walked in, looked me dead in the eye and stripped in the kitchen You have trained him well!!

OP - does your PTA do second hand uniform sales? Not sure but will have a look/ask... The 3 jumpers and polos alone were the best part of £60.

Stay in uniform until change for bedtime. No point getting more clothes out and on that will then need washed.

My 3 year old stays in her Nursery Uniform after Nursery as it's usually only an hour or so to bedtime. If it's a bath night she puts her pyjamas on after bath but otherwise stays in Uniform until bedtime.

My DS (9) always changes as soon as he gets home. I like to view it as a break in the day, school done, now to the next stage! And he is nice and comfy.

I never did as a child. Only got changed if I had to get in to a different uniform

DD2 strips as soon as she gets in the door. DD1 gets changed if her uniform is clean and not stinky but keeps it on if it's going in the wash.

I'm just about to take ds's off him now! It was his first day today so I'm starting as I mean to go on Star

PonderLand · 05/09/2018 15:45

Oh god you've just reminded me of my mum screaming at me to take my uniform off for the whole of my school life. I thought every parent of school aged children did that Envy

JellySlice · 05/09/2018 15:45

Nit unless they want to or we are going somewhere that warrants a change.

Juanbablo · 05/09/2018 16:18

It depends on what we are doing really. Dd will stay in her uniform for piano but obviously needs to change for ballet. Ds1 will almost always get changed because if he's not going to football training then he will be playing football outside. Ds2 starts tomorrow so we will see.

OutPinked · 05/09/2018 17:29

Yes either into clothes if the weather is nice enough to play out or into pyjamas. I don’t wash their uniform every day, that would be ridiculous so I want to avoid it getting dirty.

MishMashMosher · 05/09/2018 17:50

Mine both just stay in their uniform unless we were going somewhere special but that never really happens.
