Not at the start of the year, by the end of tge year we probably would. We would need to know in advance though.

Sisgal · 04/09/2018 06:09

Yes they did it for me. But I had to speak to school about it first

Mine don't. Infants have to be picked up by an adult. Juniors are just let out and can walk home themselves.

IVEgotthePOWER · 04/09/2018 06:26

Are you wanting your 12 year old to walk 4 year old all the way home? How far is this?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 04/09/2018 06:45

Nope

DearTeddyRobinson · 04/09/2018 06:46

No one here can tell you OP, you need to ask the school

CluedoAddict · 04/09/2018 06:47

No, the person collecting has to be over 16 at our school.

Seniorschoolmum · 04/09/2018 06:59

Yes our school would but only after the parent puts their wishes in writing.

stupidbloodytuesday · 04/09/2018 08:31

No, our school would not. Not for a child in reception and certainly not when then child is just beginning their school life

How judgemental you sound.

Our school allows older children to do this op, my friends son does it as he is a young carer - she is disabled and parking is very difficult at school so he walks his DB to the nearest car park for her. Ask at the school and explain your situation, if the child is sensible I can't see why not.

A 12 year old is going to be at high school? How will they finish in time to be at the junior school gates when Reception finishes?

LittleBookofCalm · 04/09/2018 08:41

is it a sibling?

OutPinked · 04/09/2018 08:58

A 12 year old is going to be at high school? How will they finish in time to be at the junior school gates when Reception finishes?

Secondary schools often finish earlier than primary, start earlier too to compensate. My secondary school was 8:30-2:30 rather than 9-3 as in primary.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 04/09/2018 09:01

Not round here they don’t. I’ve never heard of a secondary school with a 2.30 finishing time?

xyzandabc · 04/09/2018 09:04

You need to ask the school. At our school you could as long as they were one of the people authorised to collect the child.

xyzandabc · 04/09/2018 09:06

Ah, see our local secondary finishes at 2.50pm 3 days a week, and is a 5 Mon walk from the primary which finishes at 3.10pm every day so we do get a few older siblings collecting younger ones. It is possible, just depends on your locality.

ruddynorah · 04/09/2018 09:06

My 12 yr old picks up my 8 year old and has done since they were 11 and 7. Our school say a secondary school sibling can pick up a primary school sibling but only from year 1 not reception.

My big bear is that he can't walk himself! The school is less than 5 minutes walk from home. The rule is only from year 5. Infuriating. He walks further to the corner shop on non school days.

MargaretDribble · 04/09/2018 09:07

We have three schools on the same site and their finishing times are staggered, so Secondary finish at 3pm, Infants 3.10, Juniors 3.20, so it would be possible for a Secondary child to pick up an Infant.
The only way to find out is to contact the school though, OP.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2018 09:09

As a teacher who has taught Reception for several years in a variety of schools I would say it is a big fat no. All the schools I have worked at require someone 16 and over to collect infant aged children.

I am very surprised that anyone on this thread has said they have been allowed to send a minor to collect a Reception age child. Shock

MrsWombat · 04/09/2018 09:10

The secondary schools in my part of London all have different kicking out times to stop things kicking off West Side Story style on the way home. A couple of schools have an early finish on a Wednesday.

In my son's school, children have to be 14 years old to pick up. In the school I work in it's 16, but if there are exceptional circumstances parents can discuss this with the head and it will be allowed.

widgetbeana · 04/09/2018 09:22

The schools I have worked in will allow a 12 year old to pick up if they can see the parent just outside the gates. For example if parent is standing with a dog or is in the car with a sleeping baby. Or if the parent is incapacitated on crutches etc.

But not on their own to have parental responsibility

AjasLipstick · 05/09/2018 06:12

they did in my DD"s primary school about 2 years ago....we've left now but there was more than one older sibling doing pick up.

Most were quite young...12-14 ish. This was a small village primary though.

user1483387154 · 05/09/2018 06:15

Unlikely due to safeguarding issues

PinkAvocado · 05/09/2018 06:19

Iamagreyhound secondary schools here also finish at 2:30 so it isn’t unheard of.

OP-it’s highly doubtful unless you were there too but in the car park or something.

Dinnerfor1 · 05/09/2018 06:29

I am also amazed that people have been allowed to send children under 16 to collect younger siblings. At the school I work at it would be a definite no, even if it was just to walk them to the car. If we can’t see the parent/ responsible adult, we don’t let them go.
