Job interview but no annual leave

What would you do if you were offered a job interview for your dream job but didn't have any annual leave?

Is that even legal?

MoreCheerfulMonica · 03/09/2018 12:07

I’d offer to work some additional hours so that I could take off the interview time in lieu.

stellabird · 03/09/2018 12:08

I take it that you mean " I want to take a day off to go to the interview but I don't have any annual leave days owing". I'd take a sick day.

Doctor’s appointment? Not ideal but I’m sure lots of people do it. Someone I used to work with got an interview for her dream job and came clean with her boss who gave her the time off and she got it and left. Not sure I would risk that though.

GerddwrEryri · 03/09/2018 12:11

@expatinspain is what even legal?

Yes I have a job interview but no annual leave so don't know how to get time off.

Pull a sickie. Have a pretend doctor/dentist appt.

itbemay · 03/09/2018 12:16

If it’s your dream job then you have to go, ask for half day for personal reason and pay back with O/T ?

OliveBranchManager · 03/09/2018 12:17

One sick day.
Go for it!
I hope u get dream job

SnuggyBuggy · 03/09/2018 12:18

It's wrong but everyone throws sickies for this sort of thing.

OliveBranchManager · 03/09/2018 12:18

Say a filling fell out of your tooth and you're in agony and going to dentist. That way you can be in and well the next day.

Aaaahfuck · 03/09/2018 12:20

Call in sick

twoundertwo54321 · 03/09/2018 12:28

Definitely sickie

expatinspain · 03/09/2018 12:44

Sorry, I read it as the company offering your dream job didn't offer annual leave 🤦🏽‍♀️

expatinspain · 03/09/2018 12:45

Pull a sickie!

cantstopeating01 · 03/09/2018 12:51

I would work the time in tbh or say I have an appointment and will take couple of hours unpaid .
Have you used all your annual
Leave ?

GerddwrEryri · 03/09/2018 13:01

I have used all my annual leave @cantstopeating01 Sad even the compulsory days off at Christmas will have to be unpaid.

Basically I started a job halfway through the year so didn't have much annual leave.

I wanted the other job before starting this one but was unsuccessful. So now I've been given another opportunity I'd love to take it.

Filling falling out is a really good idea! I was struggling to think what reason would be good and still be well enough to work the next day.

Work from home - expecting a furniture delivery/workman etc.

Ariela · 03/09/2018 14:33

I would ask if you can be interviewed early before the start of work or right at the end of the day, after hours and explain you cannot have time off, then ask your work if you can leave a few minutes early due to an appointment/be in a bit late.

Frazzled2207 · 03/09/2018 14:36

Sickie, definitely.

WeeBeasties · 03/09/2018 14:40

Do you have an elderly relative that could have a hospital appointment that you need to take them to, and ask for a half day of unpaid leave?

GerddwrEryri · 03/09/2018 14:44

@Ariela they were quite explicit about interview times being set in stone otherwise that'd be a great idea.

@WeeBeasties I don't know does that not just sound a bit odd? Especially as the NHS will arrange transport if it's a serious issue and the patient really can't get to the hospital?

Needsleepneedsleep · 03/09/2018 14:46

What if OP's employers ask for proof if she pulls the doctor/dentist appointment excuse? Some shitty places I've worked at ask.

cantstopeating01 · 03/09/2018 15:23

I'm just nervous to call a sickie . Risky if you are caught . I have never actually done it. I would just say you have an appt and you cant reschedule it and just take as unpaid.
Anyway you can work up some extra hours ?

Ariela · 03/09/2018 17:32

In that case I'd ask for time off for an appointment that you cannot move, unpaid, but say you'll ensure you won't get behind with the work by making sure it is all done over the week.

Nacreous · 03/09/2018 17:37

My job interview appeared fixed but I rang up, apologised, offered other times and it was all very sortable.
