Job interview but no annual leave

What would you do if you were offered a job interview for your dream job but didn't have any annual leave?

I'd pull a sickie!

MumUnderTheMoon · 03/09/2018 20:18

I would check about moving the interview explain you really want to interview but that you cannot let your current employer down. As a potential future employer they should respect your dedication to work.

YetAnotherThing · 03/09/2018 20:30

Agree with mum. In a lot of places 'breakfast' interviews are done And there's respect that you can't disclose or lie to your current employer.

Don't ask to be interviewed out of work hours. As an interviewer it really grinds my gears that people think I'd like to start early or work late for them. Ditto if you throw your problem of having no annual leave left in their court - I'd just wonder why you applied for a job that you can't interview for.
Sadly I think a sickie or emergency appointment are your best bet

DialsMavis · 03/09/2018 20:43

It will have to be a fib! I've had to do it and it's horrible

spugzbunny · 03/09/2018 21:19

Definitely emergency dentist. Broken tooth, filling etc

GerddwrEryri · 04/09/2018 06:35

@DialsMavis what was your fib when you did it?

What is your sick record like in current post? That may be relevant before deciding whether to say you’re ill on the day of IV. Have you had any sickness absence as yet?

I do despair at the ‘everyone does it’ mentality. They honestly don’t.

AnarchyKitty · 04/09/2018 06:43

I rang in with a sickie (D+V) for my dream job and got offered the job on the spot.
I've never regretted it.

Loraline · 04/09/2018 06:44

Migraines are good for a 24 hour absence. Can't work but reasonable to be back at work the next day.

SnuggyBuggy · 04/09/2018 06:48

What can people do? I can't book leave without 2 weeks notice, I don't always get 2 weeks notice of an interview. The dates also tend to be non-negotiable.

@NashvilleQueen - I've had 3 days off so far as I have a long term disability.

Exactly @SnuggyBuggy there's not much else we can do is there.

If you must, then leaking pipes is safest excuse:

Leaks are genuinely urgent - you can't leave water to damage your home -
and you don't have to pretend to suddenly have recovered the next day

You just have to phone up v early the interview day, saying you are phoning round to find a plumber.
(because obviously you didn't know in advance you'd havema leak !)

You can make it a full day or half-day, because your plumber couldn't give a time when they could come
AND if you are spotted when out, no problem - the plumber had finished the repair
