12 year old DDs hair is greasy even day after washing it?

I feel bad for how often she is suddenly having to wash it.
Does anyone know of a good shampoo or anything I can get to help? I used to wash mine about once a week at that age and now twice !

My 11yo has the same problem but is also horrifically allergic to nearly every shampoo.

blaaake · 01/09/2018 09:40

Switching shampoos can help. Dd switched from tresemme to L'Oréal and no longer has to wash it daily.

I googled this a while ago and an MN thread came up. Someone suggested Sainsbury's apple shampoo, no conditioner, which is working brilliantly.

This was me at that age, I'm afraid washing hair every day was they only thing that worked for me.

milienhaus · 01/09/2018 09:41

My hair is the same and has been like that since about your DD’s age and my mum only washes hers same as you ... just happens sometimes unfortunately I think!

Branleuse · 01/09/2018 09:41

My dd is the same. We now use the elvive clay shampooo and she can get an extra day out of her hair now before washing. Also avoid conditioning

ThePricklySheep · 01/09/2018 09:41

I’ve always been a grease ball. I find shampoos for greasy hair strip the scalp of oil so much that it then produces more, giving even greater hair.

Gentle is better, I can stretch an extra day out of it with a SLS free one. Some good ones here, the faith in nature one is nice, and cheap! The Jason is probably the very gentlest though.

Is she rinsing the conditioner out properly?

Ceecee18 · 01/09/2018 09:42

Does she use conditioner? I find mine gets greasy the day after I wash if I've used conditioner. Since I've stopped I can go a couple of days between washes.

knittedwoollenmouse · 01/09/2018 09:44

Try a bar shampoo. My hair no longer gets greasy now I’ve switched.

dementedpixie · 01/09/2018 09:45

Is she only putting conditioner on the lengths and not on the top of the head?. Dd uses elvive dream lengths at the moment

poppyseeeds · 01/09/2018 09:46

I second the SLS free shampoos, I use the body shop rainforest moisture one and have found it really helps.

Lulu1919 · 01/09/2018 09:46

Try vosene

JustlikeDevon · 01/09/2018 09:47

My 12 yr old is the same. Crappy skin too. It's just hormone central here at the mo. I have advised second day messy bun with a bit of dry shampoo.

Junglefowl · 01/09/2018 09:48

Really grateful for all these ideas. Thank you so much . She doesn’t use conditioner

Oh, your DD has my sympathy OP! My hair was terribly greasy from when I was about 13 until about 19. If I went for a day without washing it, people used to think I had been swimming, as it looked so 'wet'!

The problem is her body producing an excess of sebum on the scalp. It should settle down after a few years. Unfortunately, frequent washing can actually make it worse, ime: it dries the scalp and encourages more grease to be produced.

My advice is:
Wash hair every other day
Use very mild shampoo (baby shampoo, maybe)
Do not use conditioner
Avoid brushing the hair when dry, as brushing encourages grease production; use a wide toothed comb instead
Wear the hair short or in a plait or bun, so it doesn't look lanky

Amy1996 · 01/09/2018 09:50

Try dry shampoo to drag out how long she is needed to wash it because you when you wash your hair everyday you hair gets used to it so that more you wash it the more greasy it will yet, try washing it 2 times a week and dry shampoo in between

RedPandaMama · 01/09/2018 09:51

I agree with the Elvive clay shampoo! I have very thick hair and don't have time to blow dry it now I have a baby so let it air dry but it always looks greasy straight away. I tend to dry shampoo right after washing it which is annoying.

Other things that help - quality pillow washed often, silk pillowcases are meant to be best for skin and hair. Lush bar shampoo (but expensive, does last ages though) and Lush no drought dry shampoo. Blow dry hair. Use a tangle teezer and don't over-brush or over style it. Could also be her age.

Elementally · 01/09/2018 09:53

Check she is actually washing and rinsing it properly. Try 2 washes especially if you're in a hard water area. One won't touch the grease. Teenagers can be a bit slap dash.

JillCrewesmum · 01/09/2018 09:53

First off, use a clarifying shampoo for a few days. Boots do one. Then swap to a simple, cheap shampoo, nothing that promises to add shine. Or a more expensive one that has no silicones (we like the herbal essences new ones or the elvive clay)

No conditioner.

Batiste dry shampoo

Timeisslippingaway · 01/09/2018 09:53

I didn't read thenother tries sorry to anyone who has already suggested this but have you tried a build up shampoo? I used dry shampoo for a while and when I washed and my hair with normal shampoo it was still greasy, used boots anti build up and it cleared straight away. Perhaps not the problem but just wanted to suggest it.

JillCrewesmum · 01/09/2018 09:54

And remind her to wash her scalp, not her hair. Massage all around the edges of her scalp and behind ears with the shampoo before she rinses

JillCrewesmum · 01/09/2018 09:55

I used fairy liquid on dd once!! It worked! Only once though. Also change pillow cases daily

Timeisslippingaway · 01/09/2018 09:56

RedPandaMama

The dry shampoo is probably the problem it causes terrible build up and washing your hair with normal shampoo doesn't remove the build up.

Tartle · 01/09/2018 09:57

For the dd who is allergic to all shampoo so am I and the only thing I can use except really expensive medicated stuff is body shop ginger anti dandruff shampoo. Might be worth a try.
