12 year old DDs hair is greasy even day after washing it?

I feel bad for how often she is suddenly having to wash it.
Does anyone know of a good shampoo or anything I can get to help? I used to wash mine about once a week at that age and now twice !

Is she scrubbing her scalp, you can wash hair but if the scalp itself isn't scrubbed then the dreaded isn't removed and quickly goes back onto the hair strands and you have greasy haircbb again..

Also here's something that may help extend between wash times...dry shampoo....don't wait until it gets greasy to use it...after she has washed her hair and it's completely dry, spray it down her centre parting (aim at roots and scalp) then make several partings on both sides spraying along each parting into root and scalp, then ask there to bend her head forward and part width way (side to side ) across the nape of the neck and spray into roots and scalp and keep making the partings upwards until you are at back of head...then give a light misting of dry shampoo around her hair line (spraying at roots and scalp) so that's along forehead, sideburns area, around and behind ears nape of neck...

Now you/she pretend that you are scrubbing her roots and scalp with regular shampoo and rub it in...now brush her hair and the excess will come out...because I told.you to do it after washing ,(when fully dry)when her hair is clean...a bit of the powder will stay there, then when her scalp starts pumping out grease instead it going straight on her hair the bit of dry shampoo that has stayed in her roots and scalp will be there to soak it up ...and her hair will stay grease free longer

This was me. 😢 30 years later and it's no better, sadly.

Some people are just grease balls. I never got bad acne or anything (well only the usual teenage spots) , it's only ever been my hair.

I now have to wash my hair more than other people but also always have Batiste on hand just in case. I think it would give her some courage to have some around in case she has to do something unexpectedly and her hair is looking a bit lank. I don't think it does any harm. Its not like she's gonna have it sitting in her hair for days and days! Mine is never in my hair longer than one day before I wash it anyway.

The Elvive Clay is good, and also some of the Herbal Essence silicone-free ones. But I never had much luck with the Alberto Balsam apple or tea tree ones, but she might. They're a cheap experiment anyway.

But to put it bluntly, nothing will get you that long.

At that age I didn't shower everyday but would wash my hair leaning over the bath. Had to be done.

She may just have greasy hair. I do I wash every other day but can’t wear it down for the second day.

I use a clarifying shampoo and only use conditioner on the ends. It tends to better when I have fresh highlights as they dry it out a bit. Sometime use dry shampoo. I like the aveda one - expensive but wort it. Bastise just seems artificial.
The advantage of greasy hair is my hair is quite silky and in good condition so it’s not all bad.

frogprincess84 · 01/09/2018 10:26

I've managed to stretch out to every other day by doing this: wash hair in the morning (And I am not a morning person so it's hard) using some sort of shampoo for greasy hair - cussons apple shampoo works best for me as it's quite drying. Then that night when my hair is still clean I dry shampoo the life out of it - Lee Stafford dry shampoo is the only one that works for me - then the next day my hair is still passable. Conditioner at most every other wash and a deep treatment on the weekend.

My hairdresser once washed my hair with fairy liquid as I have this problem. She said you need to properly soap it up so lots of suds and bubbles then wash and repeat.

I do it maybe once every couple of months now but it sorts it right out. It’s hormonal grease.

ScattyCharly · 01/09/2018 10:37

If it’s definitely properly clean immediately after washing then the only option is washing it every day. In this case, there isn’t any point in using a heavily stripping shampoo, she might as well use something gentle.

Second washing hair twice - the difference in lather the second time is unreal...

bumblingbovine49 · 01/09/2018 10:38

This is just genes. Some people have greasier hair than oyhets. Both my sisters and I had hair like this that needed wading every day input teens/young adulthood. It gets better. In my 50s now and my hair only needs washing once or twice a week or so now . If anything it is too dry. The really greasy stage pasdefore quickly for me than my sisters as I had marginallcdryer skin and hair than them (and fewer spots generally which I think can be related)

DS 13 is also like this but cared not one jotbabout it so I am constantly telling him to shower and wash his hair. I assume he will care a bit more as gets older . At least I hope so anyway. DS also gets mild dandruff and I have to say that good old head and shoulders seems to work for that on him. If we swap shampoo to improve the greasy hair scenario he gets dandruff so we are sticking to hear and shoulders for now and getting him to wash it every other day at least. That way he only had greasy hair 2-3 times a wrekSmile

I wash my hair daily otherwise it is too greasy.

It's long at the moment so I can just about do 2 days.

How would she feel about a perm?

I know 12 is young and that straight hair is fashionable but it would dry it out for a while.

Junglefowl · 01/09/2018 13:45

I’m not sure she’d want a perm but love the broad range of ideas! Thank you all so much. I think I’ll start with the Sainsburies apple shampoo and work my way down. I’ll update you hopefully if I remember and thanks again

All mine had this, teenage hormones!

Use a normal shampoo on the day and dry spray shampoo the day after, it's usually only needed on the crown area.

Wash hair normally every other day.

You need a fluffy type brush such as a tangle teaser to brush in the dry shampoo otherwise it's possible to detect the powder.

theboxofdelights · 01/09/2018 14:23

DD is 12 has got lots and lots of fine hair. She was the same, but, I washed it for her a few times and it improved so while she was washing it she wasn’t washing it thoroughly enough to make it clean.

We have got a three pump dispenser in the shower, Jason’s apricot shampoo in one, faith in nature lavender and geranium in another and a random Jason’s conditioner in another one. I think DD sticks to the apricot shampoo, she only conditions once a week.

Jason’s and faith in nature is about £5 delivered on amazon prime, I have them all on subscribe and save.

ShowOfHands · 01/09/2018 18:15

@Tartle thank you for the bodyshop tip. I'll give it a go. Poor DD ends up with a red raw scalp and neck every time she washes her hair.

MalloryLaurel · 01/09/2018 18:16

Make sure she's rinsing properly.

adviceonthepox · 01/09/2018 18:26

I have suffered with greasy hair since my teenage years. My hair was awful and my mum didn't do anything to help me. When I was 16 a lady in my local shop advised me to wash my hair twice with vosene shampoo daily and to only condition once a week and then only the ends of my hair. Omg it was like a revelation. I still wash my hair twice but only every other day. I have my hair trimmed every 3 weeks and it is lovely and healthy now. I only have to increase washing my hair for the week before my period is due.

drigon · 01/09/2018 18:35

I found Elvive Phytoclear Anti-Dandruff shampoo very good. I've had this problem for almost 40 years now but, as I'm 50 now, I dye it quite often and that does dry it so I can go 2 days without washing my hair now.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 01/09/2018 19:37

Try a cold rinse afterwards. Mines really greasy and I get an extra day by washing it twice then conditioning it and rinsing the conditioner out with really cold water and making sure that my scalp is properly cold. Then I don't heat dry it, just let it dry naturally. It goes insanely frizzy but a damp brush sorts that.

AveABanana · 01/09/2018 20:22

DD had this. A combination of not rinsing/too much conditioner/age. Aussie mega shampoo, twice, with a tiny bit of conditioner. Then blow dry until totally dry - she used to put it in a microfibre turban thing overnight and it'd still be damp in the morning. Drying it straight after washing makes a huge difference.

FanWithoutAGuard · 01/09/2018 20:28

Probably not possible to do anything about, but I find that when I live in hard water I have to wash my hair every day because it gets greasy.

If I'm living in softwater, with the same shampoos, I can get 2 or 3 days..

Could you get a water softener?
